When a great traditional band hits the stage with power and authenticity, the audience really pays attention. The Patuxent Partners command such attention wherever they perform. Since 1975, the Patuxent Partners have brought their exciting brand of bluegrass music to festivals, dances, concerts, and special Tom Mindte events throughout the mid-Atlantic region. Bandleader Mandolin Tom Mindte sings and plays mandolin. Tom's remarkable voice ranges from deep bass to soaring tenor, and he brings a wealth of traditional songs to the band's repertoire. Tom's phenomenal mandolin virtuosity, inspired by bluegrass greats Bill Monroe Bryan Deere and Buzz Busby, is the driving force behind the band's Guitar instrumental sound. Lead singer and rhythm guitarist Bryan Deere hails from southern Maryland. Whether the song is a country tear-jerker or a bluegrass Victoria McMullen classic, Bryan's expressive and powerful singing is pure and true to Bass the roots of the music. Adding excitement and drive to the bluegrass sound is one of the jobs of the banjo picker, and John Brunschwyler is hard to beat. John's inventive approach to traditional banjo playing has made Jack Leiderman him a favorite of bluegrass audiences throughout the region. John Fiddle also sings the baritone harmonies in the group's trios. Fiddler Jack Leiderman brings his years of experience with rosin and bow to the Patuxent Partners. His bluesy, soulful fiddle style John Brunschwyler skillfully complements the band's vocals. Banjo Pulling it all together is the strong, dynamic rhythm generated by bassist Victoria McMullen. Originally from south Georgia, Victoria is equally at home in a bluegrass, swing or classical setting, and contributes an unwavering sense of musicality to the band. High lonesome sound definition Continue There is a feeling that can quietly creep over us and which is painful but also kind of unique to each of us, making it even more powerful. I'm talking about being alone. Some sounds and musical efforts to explain this isolation and particular grief are better defined by this very un-defined word than words ever could. Musical sounds that can't be described very well, but we all know what they feel like. Lonely is the sound of one trumpeter playing taps in a quiet cemetery. Lonely is the sound of an invisible Wheeler paddle blowing his steam whistle to warn other boats on the misty and dark Mississippi River. Lonely - the whistling of the train somewhere in the distance on a hot summer night. Lonely is Carlos Santana's distinctive guitar echoing through the muted and reverent stadium, before the rest of the band kicking in in Lone hears two coyotes (some Native Americans called their song dogs) singing to each other through a huge mountain meadow. Lonely is the sound of a frightened kitten thrown in the city alley. The great and often troubled Hank Williams wrote a song called I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry in the 1940s that perhaps says the best: Listen to the lonely whippowill, it sounds too blue to fly. Midnight train whining low, I was so lonely I could cry. I've never seen a night so long when time goes crawl past. The moon just went behind the cloud to hide her face and cry.

Neal Mark Katz Philip Vandermeer ©2011 Brian Jones ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Brian Jones Finding the Avant-garde in the Old-time: John Cohen in the American Folk Revival (Under the direction of Jeremy Grimshaw and Jocelyn Neal) This thesis explores aesthetic developments in the American folk revival by examining the career of John Cohen. As a founding member of the New Lost City Ramblers, Cohen was an influential figure in the revival during the late ‘50s and early ‘60s. A significant aspect of Cohen’s outlook was his extensive involvement with avant- garde movements in art and literature. The approaches Cohen encountered among New York artists and intellectuals provided a paradigm from which he could understand the rough-hewn aesthetic of old-time country music. This thesis examines Cohen’s aesthetic by mapping his background and associations in art, photography, and folk music, giving special attention to the connections he saw between folk revivalism and the avant-garde. It then examines his work recording and promoting Roscoe Holcomb, a traditional singer from Daisy, Kentucky, to demonstrate the application of these ideas and connections.
