The normal curriculum can only go as far to teach and educate students about academic theories. Activities provide the opportunity for students to apply what they have learned in practice to real world settings and outcomes, thus creating a more well-rounded student. My number one goal is to get all our students engaged here at Grandview High School.

World of Sports: I am excited and honored to welcome you to the fall athletic season. I look forward to seeing many familiar faces and meeting new members of the Grandview community. The Fall season has just begun but we have already had a handful of exciting games with lots of energy from our fans. Many of Grandview’s athletic events will be streamed by our student broadcast team on GVTV for free at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCv7W1xRNvhKXTK- em3HMiZQ. For all upcoming games please visit the Grandview Athletics Calendar at https://www.centennialleagueco.org/public/genie/807/school/5/ Cross Country (Head Coach John Walsh, [email protected]) The Grandview Boys and Girls cross country team has gotten off to a great start to the season. The varsity girls’ team took 1st place in the Aurora City Championships and the boys’ team took 2nd place. The following week the teams flip-flopped with the boys’ team taking 1st in the Washington Park Invite and the girls’ taking 2nd. Top athletes this year on the girls’ side are Megan Ericksen, Ashlynn Mojica, Grace Kirkpatrick, Emma Thomure and Summer Abeyta. On the boys’ side are Tyler Garfield, Owen Zitek, Jacob Blevins, Andy Fox, and Lucas Blevins. The teams look to continue their positive momentum at pre-state this week and the iconic Liberty Bell Invitational the following weekend.

Field Hockey (Head Coach Alex Smith, [email protected]) Field Hockey is well underway and we are excited to be playing in the fall again! We are still searching for our first win of the season and are confident in our ability to compete the rest of the season. We have a great group of girls who are very positive and hard working. Come support us the rest of the season!!

Football (Head Coach Tom Doherty, [email protected]) This was Coach Doherty’s first game as Grandview’s Head Football Coach. The Wolves fought all night long pulling out a gritty 30-29 win over Pomona in the final seconds, as Sophomore Liam Szarka took the ball into the endzone from the one yard line. Coach Doherty was also named the Broncos Coach of the Week. https://chsaanow.com/news/2021/8/31/denver-broncos-high-school-football-coach- of-the-week-grandviews-tom-doherty.aspx? fbclid=IwAR0i16DW3gkcnrhFDy_gPyBsoOu2qmrI3IBMu4q2-xc1j1TNUisVcCVdjQg

Golf-Boys (Head Coach Kurtis Bailey, [email protected]) This year our four seniors have given us a legitimate opportunity to qualify for the state tournament as a team. We have been led by two former state individual qualifiers, Kenny VanWormer and Alex Chitkoksoong. Our other seniors are Lukas Beisner, a raw, improving talent and Charles O’Donnell, a tremendous ball striker. We have one junior on our varsity team, Jordan Ulitzky, who has shown great improvement throughout the season. Together the team has finished 3rd in each league meet, finishing only behind perennial state powers Arapahoe and Cherry Creek. We are looking forward to competing in regionals the week of September 20th-23rd.

Gymnastics (Co-op with Overland and Cherry Creek HS)

Boys’ Soccer (Head Coach Brian Wood, [email protected]) Grandview is off to a 1-2 start to their season. The Wolves defeated Hinkley for their first win of the season and have lost to Fort Collins and Mountain Vista each by one goal. Their very difficult non-conference schedule will help them prepare to compete for the Centennial League Championship and make a deep run into the playoffs.

Softball (Head Coach Liz Carter, [email protected]) Grandview started the season strong with an 8-4 victory over Pomona under the lights at Metro State Softball Field. The team learned a lot in their next three games and were able to earn a 9-inning, 9-8 walk off victory over Regis. The Wolves will play in the Don McCall tournament in Castle Rock this weekend.

Tennis (Head Coach Jeff Ryan, [email protected]) The boys’ season began last Monday against Creek 2. Although they came up short, our #1 Singles (Bruno Denegri) won, and our #2 Singles (Josh Son) took a set from his opponent. Rounding out the team this year is Mark Yan at 3 Singles, Matthew Park and Blake Hardin at #1 Doubles, Alex Eckley and Caleb Hodges at #2 Doubles, John Alie and Connor Jensen at #3 Doubles, and Krish Karekar and Dylan Johnston at #4 Doubles. The team is led by co-captains Josh Son and John Alie. Next week they play Eaglecrest on Tuesday, Smoky Hill on Thursday and have a two day tournament in Greeley on Friday and Saturday. Wish them luck!

Volleyball (Head Coach Rob Graham, [email protected]) The Wolves have carried their momentum form last year as the State Runner-Up into this season. Grandview is currently ranked #1. The team is currently 2-0 so far with a 3-0 win over Ponderosa, and an impressive 3-1 win over Chapparal.

Cheers (Head Coach Christina Maccarrone, [email protected])

Poms (Head Coach Megan Mehl, [email protected]) You can see our Spirit Teams preform at home football and volleyball games. Their competition season will begin in the late Fall.

What an honor it was for our Grandview volleyball program to get a special visit from USA Gold-medalist volleyball player Jordyn Poulter. Jordyn spent time answering questions, signing autographs, and telling her story as a youth volleyball player growing up in Aurora, with aspirations of playing on the USA Olympic team. Renewed Mask Mandate for CCSD:

Cherry Creek School District will require masks inside school buildings for ALL students PreK-12 and ALL staff in schools. All students and staff are required to wear masks on school buses regardless of vaccination status. The federal CDC order requires face masks on public transportation and at transportation hubs. Safety is our highest priority, and the goal is to maintain in-person learning. This mask requirement will help us keep schools open and students in classrooms. Read the Tri-County Health Department press release about the new universal masking requirement for people age 2 years and older in school settings. The following is a statement by Tri-County Health Executive Director Dr. John Douglas regarding the new public health order: “We have reached a point where transmission has increased significantly and is putting our communities at risk. We must now take the statutory responsibility and authority given to us by the Colorado Legislature to reduce the spread of communicable diseases and keep our communities safe. The new mask order will help to protect those who cannot get vaccinated and allow children to continue in-person learning.” Mask wearing will be required indoors and managed in a developmentally appropriate manner (we will have different expectations for two-year-old students compared to middle school students). We will work with students to address medical exemp- tions. If your family makes the decision not to wear masks, your options are below: Complete an application to attend Cherry Creek Elevation/ K-5 Online • https://www.cherrycreekschools.org/elevation

School Safety Grandview High School is committed to providing a learning environment where students, staff, and community members feel safe. This includes attention to both physical and psychological school safety. Each year, we revise our Readiness and Emergency Management for Schools (REMS) Template, which outlines important safety procedures we follow. This includes items such as our drill schedules and plans for preparation and response to potential school emergencies. On a regular basis we conduct Fire, Secure Perimeter, and Lockdown drills, and we continuously revisit and revise all safety procedures. All of our procedures are designed in accordance with recommendations of best practice made from both external agencies and the Cherry Creek School District. By establishing such proactive measures, and continually reflecting upon and adjusting our plans as needed, Grandview High School strives to promote and maintain a safe learning environment. For any questions related to school safety at Grandview High School, please contact Scott Bond, Assistant to the Principal, at 720-886-6523

School Safety Terminology Evacuation/Fire Drill The school is evacuated due to a safety concern inside of the building.

Secure Perimeter All exterior doors are locked in response to a concern of a threat outside of the building. Busi- ness is conducted as usual inside of the building.

Lockdown Students and staff take immediate shelter in response to a concern of a threat inside of the building.

Shelter-in-Place (Severe Weather) Students and staff move to “tornado safe” areas on campus, which typically means on the first floor away from windows and doors. In the event of a tornado warning, all staff will shelter-in-place. Office staff will not be available to answer phones, and staff members will not be available to open doors for students or parents. Parents will be able to pick up students after shelter-in-place is ended (as determined by the Cherry Creek School District). Mental Health Support at Grandview
