John Andrew, CAA, Athletic Director, Denver Public Schools John Andrew is the Athletic Director for Denver Public Schools. This is a position he has held for the past two years. Prior to his current position, he was Director of Middle School Athletics, and a Computer Education teacher at John F. Kennedy High School in Denver before that. He was the Head Basketball Coach, Head Boys and Girls Coach. John has been honored with the ESPN Community Service Award for hi work in creating Futures Football in partnership with the Denver Broncos and NFL Play60 initiative. He has served on numerous CHSAA committees, is a member of CADA and the NIAAA. He serves on the NFL Task Force for Youth Football. He is the founder of DPS 110, a project that seeks to recognize all the past athletics going back to the start of DPS Athletics in 1903. He is passionate about the middle school prep league that he oversees and has grown the program to have participation numbers over 6,600 kids annually. He is the primary fund raiser for athletics in DPS and the Prep League. DPS Prep League is the only league in the entire country to have all of the professional sports teams lend their financial and philosophical support.

Joe Brown, Athletic Director/Assistant Principal, Niwot High School Joe Brown is currently the Athletic Director and Assistant Principal at Niwot High School. He started his educational career at Roosevelt High School and for thirteen years he served various roles at RHS including Social Studies Teacher, Assistant Boys and Girls Basketball Coach, Head Boys Basketball Coach, Assistant Track Coach, Head Track Coach, and Athletic Director. In addition to his work in schools, Joe has been very active in the Colorado High School Coaches Association serving as the Boys Basketball President from 2013-2015 and the CHSCA President from 2015-2017. He is still actively involved in the CHSCA serving as the Co-Director of the Multi-Sport Clinic and sitting on the Executive Board. He is currently a Colorado Athletic Directors Association Board Member, a member of the Board of Directors for the YMCA of Northern Colorado and has also served on various CHSAA Committees.

Ernie Derrera, Assistant Principal/Athletic Director, Severance High School Ernie Derrera is in his second year as Assistant Principal/Athletic Director at Severance High School, a brand new school in northern Colorado. Prior to starting at SHS, Ernie served as an Assistant Commissioner for CHSAA. He also has been AP/AD at Frederick HS and Thompson Valley HS. This is his 13th year in athletic administration. Before moving to administration, Ernie taught math and science for eight years at Thompson Valley. HS and Roosevelt HS. He has been a head coach for cross country at the high school and middle school levels, as well as head track & field coach for a middle school team. Additionally, he was an assistant coach and assistant track & field coach for ten years. Education is Ernie’s third career; he spent twelve years in the U.S. Navy on board nuclear submarines and teaching nuclear power, math and heat transfer & fluid flow to students in the nuclear power program. He followed that up as an engineer for a few years before losing his mind and deciding to teach high school math at TVHS starting in the year 2000. Ernie has served on the NFHS Soccer committer, was a member of the CHSAA Swim & Dive Committee, and was the Chairman of the CHSAA wrestling committee. He currently sits as a member of the Board of Directors for CADA and is the Region 2 representative on the CHSAA Board of Directors. Cory Dobbs, President, The Academy for Sport Leadership Dr. Cory Dobbs, President of The Academy for Sport Leadership, is a leadership performance coach and team consultant. Cory’s 20-plus years of leadership thinking, writing, researching, practicing, and coaching are reflected in his books and curricular resources. His focus has been to help coaches become leadership educators and build high-performing team environments. Cory has worked with professional, collegiate, and scholastic coaches and athletes. As a consultant and trainer, Dr. Dobbs has worked with Fortune 500 organizations such as American Express, Honeywell, and Avnet, as well as medium and small businesses. Ruben Gonzalez, Former Olympian A seemingly “ordinary guy,” Ruben Gonzalez wasn’t a gifted athlete. He didn’t take up the sport of luge until he was 21. Against all odds, four years later he was competing in the Winter Olympics. At the age of 47 he was racing against 20-year-olds in the Vancouver Winter Olympics! As a Four-Time Olympian and internationally recognized expert on developing mental toughness, Ruben Gonzalez knows how to achieve success again and again. A master storyteller, Ruben uses his Olympic experiences to inspire audiences to think differently, live life with passion and have the courage to take the necessary steps toward their goals - to push beyond self-imposed limitations and to produce better results! Because of his powerfully inspiring story, Ruben was selected to carry the Olympic Torch at the Salt Lake City Olympics. Ruben’s story of overcoming incredible challenges on the road to competing in four Olympic Games over the span of four decades goes right into the core of his audiences psyche, filling them with the inspiration and self belief they need to achieve their goals. Eddie Hartnett, CMAA, Athletic and Activities Director, Boulder High School Eddie Hartnett, CMAA, Boulder High School’s Athletic and Activities Director, was the Director of District Athletics and Activities for Adams 12 Five Schools from 2009-2015. He has been an athletic director for nineteen years in Boulder Valley and Adams 12 Five Star School Districts. Not only has he been an ath- letic/activities director at the district level, he was the 5A AD at Northglenn High School and 2A AD at Nederland High School giving him unique and diverse experience at different high school levels. In January of 2015 he was elected the President of the Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA). He has been an elected member of the CHSAA Board of Directors representing District 6 since 2012. He has also been the CHSAA Equity Chair since 2002 and has served on various committees over the years including CHSAA’s Legislative Council, Board of Control, CHSAA Vision, CHSAA Sports Medicine Committee, , and basketball committees. Matt Heckel, CAA, Athletic Director, Dakota Ridge High School Matt Heckel is a graduate of Jefferson County Public Schools in Colorado where he attended Bear Creek High School. Matt takes great pride in the fact that his entire career in education has been in Jeffco Public schools. His first high school coaching experience was coaching football at Alameda High School under current Dakota Ridge High School Coach Ron Woitalewicz. He also has coached soccer at Jefferson High School, Women’s basketball at Dakota, and football while teaching English at Dakota Ridge High School until 2005 when he moved into the Administrative position at Dakota. As Athletic Director at Dakota, Matt has started Dakota’s Athletic Hall of Fame, created a Super Fan group to promote sportsmanship, and also has founded a Leadership Council that works on promoting a positive culture at the school. Since 2006 Matt has been a football league representative for 4A football, has served on the officials, and hockey committee, and is the Front Range Men’s League Representative. In 2013 Matt was awarded CADA’s 5A Athletic Director of the Year. CADA awarded Dakota Ridge High School its distinguished State Award of Merit at the 2016 CADA State Conference. Matt has been an instructor at the CADA Conferences for LTI Classes for five years and has been a two-time presenter at the National Athletic Director Conferences. Recently, Matt was honored to present at the New Mexico State Athletic Director Conference. Matt’s greatest accomplishment is being the proud father of two Dakota Ridge High School graduates. Dave Hogan, CAA, Athletic/Activities Director, Harrison High School Dave is completing his first year as the District Athletic Director for Harrison District 2. Prior to this position Dave worked at Harrison High School for 4 years as a Special Education teacher and served as Athletic Director for 14 years. Dave has been on the CADA board for eleven years. He as served as the chair for the outreach committee and the communication committee. Dave served as the CADA President from 2017-2019 and is now in his first year as the Past President. Dave has presented at this conference, as well as at the NIAAA conference. Dave was selected as the CADA 2008-09 4A Athletic Director of the Year. In 2014 he received the NIAAA Distinguished Service Award and NIAAA State Award of Merit. Dave also received the 206-17 CADA Kurby Lyle Service Award. Dave received his B.S. from Southern Illinois University- Carbondale and his M.A. in Education Supervision and Leadership from the University of Phoenix.

Michael J. Hughes, CAA, Athletics and Activities Director, Lakewood High School Mike is serving in his 25th year in education and his 22nd as an athletic director. Mike is in his fourth year as an Assistant Principal/Athletic Director at Lakewood High School after having served at Vista Peak Preparatory High School for three years and previously served as the Athletics and Activities Director at Telluride High School and Norwood High School. Mike has served on the CADA Board of Directors for the last 15 years and has been the President and Secretary of CADA in his time on the board. He was a presenter at the 2013, 2014, 2016 and 2017 National Athletic Director Conference and currently is a Vice Chair of the NIAAA Publications Committee. Mike has presented or been an LTI instructor at the Colorado State AD Conference over the last 15 years. Mike’s ties with CHSAA are also deeply rooted as he has served as the Chairman of the Committee and been a member of the Classification and League Organization Committee, Basketball, Football, Handbook and Officials Fees Committees and state seeding for soccer, basketball, football, and baseball. Mike earned his MA in Educational Leadership from Adams State University and his BA from Wartburg College, where he played for the Knights. Mike is Married to his beautiful wife, Elisa Marie and has a one year old son named Leo and lives in Lakewood, Colorado.

Corryne Irvin, Head Coach, Women’s Basketball, Saint Xavier University Corry Irvin became the Head Women’s Basketball Coach at Saint Xavier University in Chicago in July 2019. She previously led Whitney Young High School for the past 18 seasons. Irvin is a three-time NFHS Illinois Coach of the Year in girls’ basketball, and has a career record of 449-77 at Whitney Young, where she led the Dolphins to the IHSA state championship in 2008, 2012, and 2014. Irvin previously coached at the collegiate level as an assistant under legendary head coach Doug Bruno at DePaul University from 1999-2001. Irvin was responsible for recruiting for the Blue Demons, and oversaw the team’s pre-season workout program. DePaul won 18 games in each of the two seasons with Irvin on the bench, before moving on to the head coaching program at Whitney Young. Irvin attended Fresno State University on a full basketball scholarship, graduating in 1996 with a degree in Liberal Studies. She continued her education receiving a Master’s Degree in both Special Education and Curriculum and Instruction.

Mike Jacobsma, Athletic Director, Dawson School Mike is currently in his seventh year as the Athletic Director at Dawson School in Lafayette and has served as a CADA board member and the President of the Mile High League. Before his time at Dawson, Mike spent 12 years as a college Women’s Basketball Coach at the NCAA Division I, II, and III levels, including the University of Evansville (), Colorado School of Mines (Colorado), Wayne State College (Nebraska), and Central College (Iowa). While coaching at Evansville, the Purple Aces won the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament title and advanced to the NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Championship. In 2011, Mike was inducted into the Colorado School of Mines Hall of Fame for his team’s performance during the 2004-2005 season. In addition to coaching, Mike has had numerous other responsibilities at the collegiate level, including positions as Physical Education Instructor, Admissions Counselor, Compliance and Equipment Manager, and Sports Event Manager. Mike received his Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Elementary Education and Master Degree (MS) in Sports Management from Wayne State College in Wayne, Nebraska. Eric Johnson, Assistant Principal/Athletic Director, Windsor High School, & President, Colorado Board 4 Basketball Officials Association Eric Johnson is passionate about interscholastic athletics and working with kids, and has spent 23 years in public education as a teacher, administrator, coach and official. He currently serves as the Assistant Principal/Athletic Director at Windsor High School. Eric is also the current Colorado Board 4 IAABO President, and has previously served as Regional Director, Area Director and Treasurer for several officials’ associations in the state of Colorado. He has refereed games in the RMAC and Region IX JUCO as well as high school conferences, and worked in more than 15 state tournaments, including 5 state championship games in basketball and baseball. In his free time, Eric loves to watch the Broncos and Cubs, and spends time with his family and friends golfing, hunting, fishing and enjoying the outdoors.

Doug Kilgore - Retired Doug Killgore graduated with his Bachelor of Arts in voice and vocal music education from Harding College and received his performer’s certificate from North Texas State University. He is a National Board-certified Master Athletic Administrator. In 2007, Mr. Killgore was awarded the Arkansas Athletic Director of the Year, and he is an honorary life member of the Arkansas Athletic Trainers Association. Since 2011, Mr. Killgore has also served as the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association board secretary, and in 2012 he received the NIAAA State Award of Merit. In his spare time, Mr. Killgore enjoys cooking and reading military history. His favorite Bible verse is Philippians 1:9-11

Matt Kitashima - CEO, Meiso Consulting LLC As a mental conditioning coach, Matt works with college, high school and youth athletic programs along with several businesses guiding participants to understand how their mind affects their performance. The Meiso System is designed around the idea of the ninja in regards to providing participants with “weapons” to add to their mental arsenal in order to be proactive in dealing with challenges. Another central idea of the system is continuous improvement on their “Inner Ninja” to be the best version of themselves for others. His most sought after training is the Meiso Mental Toughness Training which consists of 5 sessions designed using the Navy SEALs Big 4 as a framework. In addition to the mental toughness training, Matt works 1-on-1 with athletes to help them become Prime Time Performers. Matt graduated from Hastings College in Nebraska. He and his wife, Molly have 3 daughters, Elliott (11), Vail (6) and Quinn (4).

Leroy Lopez, CAA, Athletic Director, Frederick High School Leroy attended Alameda High School in Lakewood Colorado. Upon graduating from Metro State in 1997, Leroy began his education and basketball coaching career under Scott Smith at Alameda HS. He then continued his coaching career at John F. Kennedy, Colorado School of Mines, and Skyview HS. Leroy began his administrative career in 2006 as the assistant principal and athletic director at Nederland MSHS, after serving there for three years Leroy moved to Abraham Lincoln High School, where he continued in the AP/AD role for the seven years. Leroy is now serving at Frederick High School. As an administrator Leroy has been very active in the change, growth, and improvement, of the athletic profession in Colorado. Speaker Bios Continued

Chris Mathewson, Head Athletic Trainer, Ponderosa High School Chris Mathewson enters his 25th season as the head athletic trainer of Ponderosa. Chris also serves as the Director of Athletic Training for Douglas County School District through Panorama Orthopedics and Spine Clinic. In addition to those duties Chris also serves as the “Co-Chair” to the DCSD Brain Injury Re- source Team, the Ponderosa Athletic Archives Manager and Ponderosa Athletic Equipment Manager. In February of 2015 Chris and a partner formed a company “Athletic Safety Consultants, LLC”. They are currently in development stages of a text-book and educational seminars for athletic safety. Chris received his Bachelors degree in Exercise Physiology from the University of Wyoming in 1994. In 2001 he received his Masters degree in Sports Medicine from the Sports Academy. In addition to being a certified athletic trainer Chris is also a certified strength and conditioning specialist. Chris spends a lot of time volunteering in his “spare time”. Currently Chris sits on the board of directors of the National Athletic Trainers Association Political Action Committee. Chris just finished serving on the board of directors of the National Athletic Trainers Association. He has also held the position of secretary of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Trainers Association and has served as the President of the Colorado Athletic Trainers Association for 6 years. Pat McCabe, Assistant Principal/Athletic Director, Arapahoe High School Pat McCabe is an Assistant Principal and the Athletic Director at Arapahoe High School. 2020 will mark his twenty-seventh year in education. Pat grew up in the Colorado eastern plains town of Yuma. He earned Bachelor’s Degrees in Elementary Education and Middle School Education from the University of Northern Colorado. His career started in Leadville, Colorado, teaching sixth grade English and coaching basketball at Lake County High School. Pat and his wife Keri moved three years later to Littleton where he taught at Goddard Middle School, and coached at AHS. In 2001, he took a job teaching and coaching in Jefferson County at Lakewood and Bear Creek High Schools. In 2009, Pat earned is graduate degree from the University of Colorado, Denver. It was then that he hung up his whistle and took a job at Mountain Vista High School, where he would serve as the Athletic Director for eight years. During that time, he saw his first two daughters, Robbie and Molly, graduate from MVHS. In the spring of 2016, upon learning that his third and youngest daughter Emma wanted to attend her home school, rather than following him to Vista, Pat sought and secured the Athletic Director position at Arapahoe High. During his coaching career, Pat has coached six different sports, with a particular focus on basketball. As an Athletic Director, Pat has had the privilege of building and working in some of the most successful athletic programs in Colorado. Autumn Sereno, Assistant Principal/Athletic Director, Green Mountain High School Autumn is serving in her 15th year in education and 9th as an Athletic Director and Assistant Principal. She is completing her third year at Green Mountain High School after having served at Broomfield, ThunderRidge , and Sand Creek High School’s. She was the Head Girls’ Basketball Coach at Sand Creek for 5 years while teaching physical education and health. Autumn has been a member of the CHSAA Basketball, Softball, and Football Committees while also serving on Legislative Council.
