In the News...... 20 Aspen Academy 5859 S University Blvd. Greenwood Village, CO 80121 Ways to Get Involved...... 21 aspenacademy.org Since 2005, Aspen Academy has cultivated fertile ground A MESSAGE where our students can take root, engage in rigorous academic programs, develop their character and leadership skills, and build a sense of global citizenship through service learning. We believe education should address what FROM OUR students know but equally important, who they are. This means taking the time to know each of our 400 students individually and challenging them to be extraordinary leaders who do extraordinary things. LEADERSHIP

Over the course of our 2018-2019 school year we welcomed 60 new families into our community; graduated 43 students in the Class of 2019 who continued on to 13 high schools across , Tennessee, and Connecticut and increased our alumni population to 309 alumni who went on to 35 high schools and 45 institutions of higher learning.

Some highlights of the 2018-2019 year: • We built more infrastructure to support faster and smoother learning with switch and fiber optic cable upgrades to more than double Internet speed and capacity; and added a new Chromebook cart in the Lower School STEAM lab.

• We completed the first phase of the lobby renovation with new paint, new flooring and video “bulletin boards” that Kristina Scala, George Sparks share current events and highlight student and faculty Head of School Board Chair successes and celebrations.

• We began our community center/cafeteria renovation including the addition of a commercial kitchen, outdoor seating, and installing a new sound system.

• We continued our dedication to fostering leadership and financial acumen, we continued student and faculty growth We firmly believe the world belongs to in both areas through our Aspen Youth Leadership Institute those who show up and hustle. We will and Aspen Entrepreneurial Institute. We celebrated the spirit of creating with our annual Entrepreneurial Expo and never stop hustling on behalf of Aspen Shark Tank. Our students led countless academic, arts, Academy students, faculty, staff and and leadership performances, projects and events and families. engaged in 7,000 hours of service learning. Sincerely, • At the end of the year, the following faculty members were elected by their peers to lead curriculum development, create cross-disciplinary connections and model innovative teaching techniques in the following domains: Jake Lovett, Social Sciences; Kerri Esposito and Maureen Mullen, Math; Eric Peterson and Joanna Weisel, Literacy & Communications; Jessica Cho, Science; and Octavia Betz Kristina Scala, Head of School and Chris Holtzem, Arts.

• We took the next steps as global citizens by embracing our own exploration of diversity, equity and inclusion, from monthly professional development with our staff to personalized IDI assessments with faculty, staff, and parents. “In this day and age where we worry so much about the ‘Whole “We have been and continue to me WOW’d by Aspen Academy Child’ and their mental health I think it’s imperative you all everyday. Our two older children attend the school. They are two know what a favor they’ve done for Jack and I am sure other totally different types of students with different needs, different Aspen students. Here’s where I would normally say, ‘they’re learning styles, different interests and they are both excelling such great teachers,’ but that’s not good enough. They are more than we ever could have dreamed of! The student to fabulous human beings who love these kiddos and care about teacher ratio at Aspen is so low that every students individual each and every one of them and their success. We’re so needs are perfectly challenged. Our children have made really blessed to have their guidance and care.” great friends that all come from wonderful families. We couldn’t - Jackie Watters, Middle School Parent be happier. It really is our second home.” - Melanie Quinlan, Lower School + PreK Parent “My child has only attended PreK so far and is starting Kindergarten this year. So far our experience as a family has been INCREDIBLE! Aspen Academy is not just a STEAM school with a wonderful outlook on leadership, finances and a BE KIND motto, it is also a community for the whole family. I have met the most wonderful people being a part of the Aspen family and continue to feel reassured by the decision to send my child here. It is worth the cost! I can not say enough positive things about this amazing place! Love love love our school!” - Brittany Stream, PreK Parent 8 Aspen Academy Annual Report | 2018-2019 A contribution to Aspen Academy’s Annual Fund is the first and most important gift we ask of our families, faculty and staff and board Impact of Our of trustees. Aspen Academy continues to be the only independent school in Colorado without an operating gap between tuition revenue 2018-2019 and expenses. In 2018-2019 we experienced an outpouring of generosity! Our community, board of trustees and faculty all came together raising over $194,000 being equally divided: Program development $64,956 Annual Fund Professional development $64,956 Financial Aid $64,956.

• Teachers: professional development offered to all faculty to fund growth in leading, educating, and inspiring our students.

• Students: tuition assistance and financial aid allow us to serve even more students without next-generation academics, innovative character and leadership curricula, and global citizenship.

• Learning: curriculum and program enhancement funds our vision to remain a national leader in innovative and transformative education.

14 Aspen Academy Annual Report | 2018-2019 Updates & Milestones

ASPEN ENTREPRENEURIAL INSTITUTE (AEI) & ASPEN YOUTH LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE (AYLI) The impact of our Entrepreneurial and Leadership Development programs has been worthy of celebration!

The 2018-2019 school year marked the initial roll-out of our fully authored leadership development curriculum. We have loved the energy around our monthly practices and have seen great things from the use of a common language and school-wide focus. Not only that, but the growth our students are recognizing in themselves is clear. Scores from self-perception assessments offered at the beginning of a unit and compared to the end of the unit are trending up across nearly every standard tested. Some growth highlights from our post tests in our pilot units on social emotional intelligence (responses are representative of aggregated data in grades 3-8):

RESPONDED TO SURVEY WITH ALWAYS/MOST ALWAYS Responding to 16% Growth challenging situations > 73% Reconizing and managing the 11% Growth 74% ways their emotions change > 74%

Following a plan to 15% Growth achieve their goals > 83%

Managing and reducing stress in 7% Growth difficult times > 77% Identifying personal strengths 8% Growth and value > 82%

Additionally, the spring 2019 season marked a critical point in our leadership programs as we were awarded a generous grant from Oppenheimer to build the programs, both in expansion and impact. We are focused on their efficacy internally and the build out of online delivery of content for ease of implementation and the reach of their impact across the country.
