Honors and Awards

1999 - Present

Gauvin Bailey was awarded a fellowship at the Villi I Tatti, ( Center for Italian Renaissance Studies) in Florence, Italy, as well as the Rome Prize at the American Academy in Rome, both for 2000-01. Professor Bailey decided to take the former offer, and will spend the coming academic year in Florence.

Elli Crocker executed a public commission which was installed and dedicated at Newton North High School in Newton, MA in February, 2000. This 10x20 foot painting, which depicts the high school community at the turn of the millennium, took one year to complete. Professor Crocker was selected in an open competition in 1998, and received a grant from the Massachusetts Cultural Council for this project.

Elli Crocker had two solo exhibitions this academic year: at the Bromfield Gallery in Boston during September-October 1999, and at Smith College during February-March, 2000.

William Ferguson was selected as Teacher of the Year by the graduating class of 1999.

SunHee Gertz was chosen as Outstanding Academic Advisor for the 1998-99 academic year.

SunHee Gertz received a Fulbright Senior Scholar Award in 1999 for research at the University of Trier.

Laura Graves received the 1999 Sage Scholarship Award, given by the Gender and Diversity in Organizations Division of the Academy of Management. The award recognizes outstanding scholarly contributions to the discipline of management.

Robert Hsu and Benjamin Cheng won the Distinguished Paper Award at the annual meeting of the Southwestern Society for Economists for Financial Development and Economic Growth in Japan, subsequently published in Southwestern Economic Review, vol 26, spring, 1999.

Fern Johnson received the Francine Merritt Award in 1999, given by the Women’s Caucus of the National Communication Association for outstanding contributions to the lives of women in the NCA and the communication discipline.

James McHale was awarded the 1999 Oliver and Dorothy Hayden Junior Faculty Fellowship, presented to an outstanding junior faculty member who personifies the Clark ideal of excellence in teaching and excellence in research, scholarship, or creative work.

Barbara Thomas-Slayter was awarded the 1999 University Senior faculty Fellowship, presented to the outstanding senior faculty member who personifies the Clark ideal of excellence in teaching and excellence in research, scholarship, or creative work.

Virginia Vaughan was awarded a Mellon Fellowship by the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, D.C. for the 2000-01 academic year.
