PDGA Canada was set up a few years ago as a small branch office of PDGA headquarters in USA. Its purpose is to support and promote disc golf and PDGA activities in Canada. The PDGA International Director works as Canada Manager about 4-5 hours a week. His roles include Treasurer of PDGA Canada funds, working with the TDs in scheduling events and processing their results, coordination with the elected PDGA Provincial representatives, and responding to general requests for information and support. This annual report aims to inform you about PDGA Canada and its activities. Hopefully it will also encourage you to renew your PDGA membership and sanction your events in 2013. At the end of this document you will find a few attachments, including a 2012 Financial Statement, reports on the 2012 ODSA (Ontario) Series from Dean Aelick, and on developments in Quebec from Peter Lizotte, as well as a letter from the Grande Prairie Club in Alberta, on how PDGA Canada support for their new course has been put to good use. Part One: 2012 Year in Review Events and Members: Here is a summary of PDGA Tour Events and Current Members in 2012 by Province, as compared to the 3 previous years. PROVINCE 2009 2009 2010 2010 2011 2011 2012 2012 Tour Current Tour Current Tour Current Tour Current Events Members Events Members Events Members Events Members Alberta 2 26 0 26 0 28 4 37 Br Columbia 3 63 6 58 6 66 4 65 Manitoba 0 3 0 1 0 5 0 6 Maritimes 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 1 Ontario 14 100 15 118 14 127 14 140 Quebec 1 11 2 15 1 13 1 9 Saskatchewan 0 3 1 2 0 1 0 2 TOTAL 20 206 24 220 21 240 23 260 Comments: PDGA membership is now growing by close to 10% a year, which is encouraging. Of particular note in 2012 was the sanctioning of the Alberta Tour’s pro divisions and the growth of memberships in that province. Thanks go to Craig Burrows-Johnson for all his efforts in these regards. In 2013 we are hoping to have the Quebec Tour Finals on board, as well as increased contact with Manitoba, Saskatchewan and the Maritimes. While the PDGA is USA based and led, each year it is becoming more of a truly international association, with members in more than 30 countries worldwide and a global system of Tour events and player ratings. Details on the many direct and indirect benefits of PDGA membership for players in Canada and other countries can be found here: http://www.pdga.com/documents/benefits-of-pdga-international-membership . Recently the PDGA improved its system of collecting supporting (or temporary) memberships, and reduced the work of TDs in this process. Players who have never been a PDGA member who pay the $10 fee at a PDGA event can now sign up directly for their membership number on line here: http://www.pdga.com/supporting . The average number of players per event also increased from 49 to 52. The Toronto Island Maple Leaf, hosted by Dave Slater and the TIDE Club, was Canada’s leading event last year. A celebration of the 25 th Anniversary of the 1987 PDGA Pro Worlds, it attracted 5 World Champions from the USA, including 1987 World Champ Gregg Hosfeld who returned to the scene of his historic triumph. Many other Canadian tournaments featured strong fields and generous sponsorship, notably the Alberta Series, the BC Provincials, all the events hosted by the St Thomas Disc Sports Club, and the inaugural ODSA Gold Series Championship. These are all positive signs pointing to the commitment of local clubs and TDs to running quality events. In 2013 we can also look forward to the return of the biennial Canadian Championship in Kamloops BC, which prides itself on being Canada’s sports tournament capital. Hopefully a bunch of players from eastern Canada will be convinced to make the trip cross-country to compete in this renowned event. Out west BC’s Dave Ross continues to play World Class golf, while Rob Sharpe has become the top dog in Alberta. Patrick Huot is currently the top Franco-Canadien. Otherwise the stats are dominated by shooters from the long-time small-town hotbed of St Thomas ON, including the top 4 spots in terms of pro cash won. Another St Thomas resident, former leading shooter Jeff “Maltbag” Malton, brought his bag of old school plastic to the Can Am Finals where he walked off with the Pro Master title. Hopefully 2013 will also see the return to competition of Rookie Grandmaster and Hall of Famer Mike Sullivan, as well as the sport’s original Tourist, Glen Whitlock. Daniela Bocks INCIDENCE OF SHOULDER PAIN IN PROFESSIONAL AND SEMI-PROFESSIONAL DISC GOLFERS Degree Programme in Physiotherapy 2019 INCIDENT OF SHOULDER PAIN IN PROFESSIONAL AND SEMI- PROFESSIONAL DISC GOLFERS Bocks, Daniela Satakunnan ammattikorkeakoulu, Satakunta University of Applied Sciences Degree Programme in Physiotherapy April 2019 Number of pages: 33 Appendices: 3 Keywords: shoulder, pain, disc golf, frisbeegolf ____________________________________________________________________ The aim of this thesis was to investigate the incidence of shoulder pain in active disc golf players. Prior studies suggested that the proportion of the disc golf players expe- riencing shoulder pain is high when compared to the normal population. Factors that might contribute to these incidences were researched in this study. These factors were years of playing, skill level of the player determined by the PDGA rating, and throwing techniques. Furthermore, the onset of the pain was investigated. The data for this study was collected through an epidemiological survey, which 63 active disc golf players took part in. The theory part of this thesis contains background information about the anatomy and the biomechanics of the shoulder joint. Furthermore, the biomechanics of the different disc golf throws are analyzed. The data of the questionnaire was analyzed using IBM SPSS and Microsoft Excel Add- in provided by SAMK (Tixel). The data revealed that 53,3% of the participants have disc golf related shoulder pain. Additionally, the correlations of incidence of pain to active playing years and player rating were investigated. As were the onset of the pain and the action leading to the onset of the pain. The obtained data showed that players with a long career were more affected by pain, as well as certain throwing techniques were more prone to the onset of pain.

THE UNIVERSITY OF CALGARY Exploring Emerging Recreation and its Planning Challenges: the Case of Disc Golf in Calgary. by Hugo Haley A Master’s Degree Project Submitted to: The Faculty of Environmental Design, University of Calgary. In Partial Fulfilment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Environmental Design (Planning) Faculty of Environmental Design, Planning Program CALGARY, ALBERTA June, 2002 © Hugo Haley 2002 Abstract This document studies the emerging recreational activity of disc golf through the examination of its recent conflict-ridden integration into urban parks in Calgary. This research was inspired by a case of recreation conflict that did not appear to be sufficiently understood by the user group and municipal staff. The thesis of this document proposes that planning for the emerging sport of disc golf by municipal officials and representatives of the user group can suffer from severe limitations in research, procedure and organizational capacity. These limitations can contribute to serious conflict between recreation interest groups. The findings indicate that this proposition is consistent with the Calgary context. Recommendations are presented to improve disc golf planning and management in Calgary based on effective planning research, sound management of recreational resources, and community involvement best practices. The research has also produced resource material based on several public surveys conducted during the term of this research. i Acknowledgements & Dedication My thanks go out to all those that have supported me in this project. My supervisors at the University of Calgary, Professor Don Schultz and Dr. Douglas Brown, guided me through this project with insight and understanding. Mahoney Department of Economics The University of North Carolina at Asheville One University Heights Asheville, North Carolina 28804 USA Faculty Advisor: Dr. Leah Mathews Abstract The sport of disc golf has grown, and is still growing, at an astounding rate. Despite all of disc golf’s positive qualities, it can be harmful to the natural ecology of the area in which it is played. Disc golf has been documented to cause such environmental degradation as greatly increased erosion, soil compaction, significant trampling of undergrowth and loss of vegetative cover, as well as persistent damage to trees, such as the stripping of bark, leaves, and branches and indentations and nicks made by the discs, which can result in tree death. Because of the sport’s increasing popularity and negative ecological impacts, it is important to know whether the benefits of disc golf courses are worth the cost. Moreover, because there are mitigation techniques available to offset the negative impacts of disc golf such as behavioral modification, tree-wrapping, and mulching, it would also be beneficial to know whether players would be willing to pay, and how much, to help fund mitigation costs. Using the non-market valuation survey techniques of contingent valuation and contingent behavior analysis, this study examines players’ recreational demand for disc golf at Richmond Hill Disc Golf Course in Asheville, NC, and their willingness to pay (WTP) to maintain the park.
