CHRIS KNIGHT Almost Daylight
CHRIS KNIGHT Almost Daylight “It’s hard to know how people are gonna react,” Chris Knight says of Almost Daylight, his ninth album and first new recording in over seven years. “I’ve written songs about a lot of different things going all the way back to my first record, and some folks still think ‘somebody kills somebody’ is all I write about. Maybe that’s why I was bound and determined to get these particular songs on this album. If people like them, then we’ll be fine. But I wasn’t gonna do it any other way.” For the past 20 years, Chris Knight has only made music his own way. He’s released eight acclaimed albums, played thousands of electrifying live shows and built generations of fervent fans from Texas honky-tonks to Manhattan rock clubs. He’s been hailed as “the last of a dying breed…a taciturn loner with an acoustic guitar and a college degree” (The New York Times) and “a storyteller in the best traditions of Mellencamp and Springsteen” (USA Today). Bottom line, he’s hard-earned his reputation as one of America’s most uncompromising and respected singer/songwriters. And now with Almost Daylight, Knight delivers the most powerful – and unexpected – music of his career. Almost Daylight is very much a Chris Knight album, familiarly featuring vivid pictures of rural characters, desperate men and hardscrabble survivors. At the same time it’s unlike anything Knight has done before, with formidable testaments to compassion, redemption and even straight-up love. It’s an album both tough and tender, as bare-knuckled as it is open-hearted. -

Homeless Brother by Don Mclean, Released in 1974 on the Album Homeless Brother
Homeless Brother by Don McLean, released in 1974 on the album Homeless Brother I was walking by the graveyard, late last Friday night, I heard somebody yelling, it sounded like a fight. It was just a drunken hobo dancing circles in the night, Pouring whiskey on the headstones in the blue moonlight. So often have I wondered where these homeless brothers go, Down in some hidden valley were their sorrows cannot show, Where the police cannot find them, where the wanted man can go. There's freedom when your walkin', even though you're walkin' slow. Smash your bottle on a gravestone and live while you can, That homeless brother is my friend. It's hard to be a pack rat, it's hard to be a 'bo, But livin's so much harder where the heartless people go. Somewhere the dogs are barking and the children seem to know That Jesus on the highway was a lost hobo. And they hear the holy silence of the temples in the hill, And they see the ragged tatters as another kind of thrill. And they envy him the sunshine and they pity him the chill, And they're sad to do their livin' for some other kind of thrill. Smash your bottle on a gravestone and live while you can, That homeless brother is my friend. Somewhere there was a woman, somewhere there was a child, Somewhere there was a cottage where the marigolds grew wild. But some where's just like nowhere when you leave it for a while, You'll find the broken-hearted when you're travellin' jungle-style. -

Your Graduation Is Going to Be Broadcast on KOLO, but I Just Found
OKAY! We have a major problem – Your graduation is going to be broadcast on KOLO, but I just found out this morning at my Choir Directors Zoom meeting that they will not allow ANY copyrighted music – they are not going to take the chance, in our very litigious society, that they won’t get sued. So, we either have to live with no music in our big graduation video, or we have to write our own. Damonte Ranch is doing that today. I can go either way with this – we can just sing what we’re doing and have our own little video, or I’m up for writing something new. And THAT can go two ways as well – you can help me with the lyrics and trust me to write the melody and the arrangement, or you can help with the melody, too, but that will be more involved. Chord changes cannot be copyrighted, just lyrics and melody. So what do you want to do, VoMo? I have included lyrics to 9 very popular graduation songs, most of which I have taught and conducted in my 20 years of teaching. You can look at them and pick a few lines you think are important, tell me, and I can rewrite them to not violate copyright; you can come up with your own; you can comb the internet for your favorite bands and see what they said and report back to me; or we can just stick with “I Lived” and not have any music in the official KOLO video at all.
