Religion claimed it as one of her chief orna- ments on all solemn occasions, and no festivals `vere given without uniting it to the other ceremonies or diversions. The caller will walk everyone through the dance first so all the dancers know what the moves are. The caller will call out all the moves as you dance until the dancers can dance the dance on their own. A dance can last between 10 and 15 minutes including the walk through.

Of course we can "discover" the dance figures, write them up, and dance them some place else. They are pleasant entertainment, but they are changed uihen the basic community meaning is no longer present. Dancers in a traditional community know what is correct and pleasing to them in their dance. Thus the dancing in each community is special to that community. The subtle differences that make a dance "right" in a community are often hard for an outsider to grasp.

When I learned the Virginia Reel from my aunt at a family celebration or danced the Polka at my cousins’ weddings, I wondered how, where and from whom did they learn these dances? Also in my childhood, I often heard the women in my family sing songs together at family gatherings, and it amazed me how many popular songs they knew. Their pleasure in singing seemed to transcend the mundane household chores they were doing, and when much later in life, I discovered those songs played on the public radio station or found them on recordings, they brought back many pleasant memories. From this personal history, and my participation in folk music and dance activities in Kansas over the last fifteen years, I came to think about whether there is a folk music and dance community in Kansas that needs to collect, preserve and access folk music and dance traditions, and what plan an information professional could develop to assist connecting the people in the community with collecting and accessing the resources.

Promoted by Alonso, ballet took firm roots in Cuba in the following decades, particularly after the Cuban Revolution (1959). This dissertation integrates the methods of historical research, postcolonial critique and discourse analysis to explore the performative and discursive strategies through which Alonso defined her artistic identity and the collective identity of the Cuban ballet. The present study also examines the historical context of the development of ballet in Cuba, Alonso’s rationale for the practice of ballet on the Island, and the relationship between the Cuban ballet and the European ballet. Alonso defended the legitimacy of Cuban dancers to practice ballet and, in specific, perform European classics such as Giselle and Swan Lake. She opposed the notion that ballet was the exclusive patrimony of Europeans. She also insisted that the cultivation of this dance form on the Island was not an act of cultural colonialism. In her view, the development of ballet in Cuba consisted, instead, of an exploration of a distinctive Cuban voice within this dance form, a reformulation of a European legacy from a postcolonial perspective.

Appalachian clogging combines British roots with Native American and African influences: it evolved in the Southern Appalachian Mountains of the USA, and is now a popular performance dance form in England.
