  • Copycat Snacks in Schools by Cara Wilking, J.D
The Public Health PHAI Advocacy Institute MAY 2014 Copycat Snacks in Schools by Cara Wilking, J.D. Introduction The Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 (HHFKA) authorized the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to set nutrition standards for all foods and beverages sold in schools.1 Prior to the HHFKA, the USDA only promulgated rules for items sold outside of the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) that were of “minimal nutritional value,” such as soda, gum, and candy.2 Starting July 1, 2014, all foods sold outside of the NSLP, such as food from vending machines and school stores, will have to meet USDA “Smart Snacks” nutrition criteria. Not wanting to lose the in-school marketing opportunity, major food companies like PepsiCo are producing reformulated versions of popular junk foods like Cheetos® and Doritos® that meet the Smart Snacks criteria, but use the same brand names, logos and spokescharacters as are used to market traditional junk food. These copycat snacks are not widely available for purchase outside of schools and are clearly designed to co-market traditional junk food to children in school. This issue brief describes copycat snacks, how they undermine nutrition education efforts, and what can be done to stop the sale and marketing of these products in schools. Copycat Snacks Copycat snacks are a vehicle for food companies to co-market their popular unhealthy, junk food brands in schools. Copycat snacks meet USDA Smart Snacks nutrition criteria, but are marketed using brand names, product names, logos, and spokescharacters that are also used to market junk food.

THIS REPORT CONTAINS ASSESSMENTS OF COMMODITY AND TRADE ISSUES MADE BY USDA STAFF AND NOT NECESSARILY STATEMENTS OF OFFICIAL U.S. GOVERNMENT POLICY Required Report - public distribution Date: 3/29/2018 GAIN Report Number: SA1804 Saudi Arabia Food Processing Ingredients 2018 Approved By: Alan Hallman, U.S. Embassy, Riyadh Prepared By: Hussein Mousa, U.S. Embassy, Riyadh Report Highlights: The Saudi food processing sector has been rapidly growing due to government support of food processers, rising per capita income, and major demographic and socio-economic changes. These factors have supported an increase in the number of Saudi food processing companies, from 691 firms in 2005 to 938 firms in 2016. Investment in this sector increased by approximately 11% per year from 2007 to 2016, and reached $23 billion in 2016. Attractive investment conditions have lured some multinational corporations to establish production facilities in Saudi Arabia. Most Saudi food manufacturers depend on imports to secure their needs of food ingredients and raw materials. In 2016, Saudi Arabia imported about $2.345 billion worth of food ingredients for further processing. U.S. suppliers provided about 6 percent of these food processing products. Saudi Arabia exports a significant part of its processed food production, estimated at $1.22 billion in 2016, sharp decrease compared to approximately three billion exported in 2015. SECTION I. MARKET SUMMARY The Saudi food manufacturing and processing sector has rapidly grown in the past ten years. Support from the Saudi Government includes direct subsidies for selected food production equipment, low land leasing prices, long term interest free loans, duty free imports of raw materials, and highly subsided utilities.

  • Factors Affecting Nutritional Status and Eating Behaviours of Adolescent Girls in Saudi Arabia
Factors affecting nutritional status and eating behaviours of adolescent girls in Saudi Arabia Elham AL-Jaaly Thesis submitted for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY University College London Centre for International Health and Development Institute of Child Health UCL August 2012 Declaration I, Elham Al-Jaaly, confirm that the work presented in this thesis is my own. Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated. Signed: ELham Al-Jaaly August 2012 2 Abstract The objective of this study was to assess factors affecting nutritional status and eating behaviours among adolescent girls in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. A cross-sectional survey was conducted in 1519 13 to 18-year-old girls from 18 schools. Nutritional assessment included anthropometric, haemoglobin measurements, and a questionnaire exploring a range of nutrition-related issues. Since one of the major influences on eating behaviours is food marketing and media, a descriptive analysis of TV advertisements aired on three of the most popular TV channels was carried out. In addition, analysis of the content of school meals was conducted. The overall prevalence of overweight girls is 24% of the population, obesity 13.5% and underweight 14%. The prevalence of anaemia (Hb<12 g/dl) was 29%. Some eating behaviours were found to be particularly prevalent, including snack consumption, eating outside the home, consumption of sugar-carbonated drinks, and very low consumption of vegetables and fruit. The media was regarded as one of the most important sources of health information. The analysis of the sampled advertisements (n=6,272) showed that of the entire number of paid product advertisements, (n=5150) 17.6% were for food and drink products.

A biotechnology company out of California called Senomyx specializes in the development of food flavorings using aborted embryonic cells for the production of food chemicals. Research by Senomyx into the use of “HEK- 293″ aborted human fetal cells as a flavor enhancer, was published in pubmed in 2002, after which several patents were filed by them. Many vaccines, including Merck & Co.’s MMR II vaccine for measles, mumps and rubella, as well as ProQuad (Merck), Varivax (Merck), Pentacel (Sanofi Pasteur) and Havrix (GlaxoSmithKline), also contain derivatives of aborted human babies. Oklahoma Senator Ralph Shortey has introduced legislation in early 2012 to prohibit the normalization of widespread cannibalism, yet it still continues to this day.
