llison Lenox set new standards in her career in cross country and track and field at the Community College of Rhode Island and the Rhode Island Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (RIAIAW) honored her efforts by naming her CCRI’s 2018 Distinguished Student-Athlete Award winner . The Distinguished Student-Athlete Award is presented to one female athlete from each of the state’s nine collegiate institutions .The criteria is as follows: The honoree must possess leadership qualities; she must stand out as a role model to others, displaying such coveted assets as perseverance, commitment, ethical behavior and academic success; and she must enjoy an above-average degree of physical talent . An accomplished runner on the cross country team, Lenox really burst onto the scene with the school’s outdoor track team during her freshman year, qualifying for and winning the NJCAA Division III National Championship in the triple jump in just her first year competing in the event. Lenox’s remarkable achievement also earned her First Team All-American Honors in 2017 . She went on to rank No. 1 in the triple jump as a sophomore last season before finishing fourth at the D-III Championships in Utica, N .Y . As a freshman, Lenox also competed on the indoor track team, participating in the 200-, 400-, 500-, 600- and 800-meter events . During the outdoor season, she also earned a qualifying time of 1 minute, 3.83 seconds in the 400 before adding the triple jump to her arsenal in the final meet of the year. Jumping for the first time, Lenox recorded a distance of 10.36 meters, one of the best finishes in D-III that season, good enough to qualify for the National Championships . At Utica, she won the triple jump with a 10 .21 and also placed fourth in the 400 with a season-best 1:02 .19, a remarkable performance in both events . As a sophomore, Lenox joined CCRI’s cross country team to help train for track season . She steadily improved throughout the year, shaving more than three minutes off her time by the end of the season . Lenox saved her best for last, posting a season-best time of 22 minutes, 59 seconds at the NJCAA Championships in Holyoke, Mass., finishing 65th overall. Not to be outdone, Lenox set a new school record in the 500 meters during the indoor track season with a time of 1:20 12,. breaking the mark of 1:20 .53 set by Sherilyn Nicholas in 2005 .
