  • Encountering Mimetic Realism: Sculptures by Duane Hanson, Robert Gober, and Ron Mueck
Encountering Mimetic Realism: Sculptures by Duane Hanson, Robert Gober, and Ron Mueck by Monica Ines Huerta A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (History of Art) in The University of Michigan 2010 Doctoral Committee: Associate Professor Patricia Simons, Co-Chair Associate Professor Rebecca Zurier, Co-Chair Associate Professor David T. Doris Professor Alexander D. Potts © Monica Ines Huerta All rights reserved 2010 To My Dad ii Acknowledgements Although it can at times feel like an isolating journey, a dissertation is never a solo adventure. There have been many people along the way that have contributed to the progress and completion of this project. I am grateful to my academic advisors who gave generously of their time and expertise. Rebecca Zurier, a supportive advisor, whose historical perspective continuously pushed me to creatively and critically think about the many permutations of realism. Patricia Simons, a wonderfully committed mentor, who asked the tough questions that helped me break through binaries in order to embrace more nuanced arguments. Alex Potts, whose early and ongoing support during my graduate career inspired me to delve deeper into the areas of modern and contemporary sculpture. And last be not least, David Doris, a most welcomed addition to my committee in the later stages of writing and whose creativity I will forever attempt to emulate. I would also like to extend a very warm thank you to the faculty and staff of the Department of the History of Art for their scholastic, financial, and logistical support. I am very thankful to the Ford Foundation for providing the necessary financial backing that allowed me to focus on the research and writing of this document during critical stages of its development.

  • The Aesthetics of Intoxication in Antebellum American Art and Culture
ABSTRACT Title of Document: THE AESTHETICS OF INTOXICATION IN ANTEBELLUM AMERICAN ART AND CULTURE. Guy Duane Jordan, Ph.D., 2007 Directed By: Professor Sally M. Promey, Art History and Archaeology My dissertation, The Aesthetics of Intoxication in Antebellum American Art and Culture, proposes an ambitious re-evaluation of aesthetics in the United States between 1830 and 1860 that locates the consumption of images in relation to discourses of excess, addiction, and dependency. I uncover the antebellum period’s physiological construction of looking as a somatic process akin to eating and drinking and offer a new definition of aesthetic absorption not merely as the disembodied projection of the viewer into a pictorial space, but as the corporeal ingestion of the image into the mind of the viewing subject. I demonstrate how this heretofore unstudied and historically-grounded alignment of aesthesis and alimentation played a crucial role in the production and reception of antebellum literature and visual culture. To this end, my dissertation stands as a broad-ranging cultural history that features fundamental reinterpretations of major works of art by Charles Deas, Thomas Cole, Hiram Powers, and Frederic Church. THE AESTHETICS OF INTOXICATION IN AMERICAN ART AND CULTURE By Guy Jordan Dissertation submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School of the University of Maryland, College Park, in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy 2007 Advisory Committee: Professor Sally M. Promey, Chair Professor Renée Ater Professor Joy Kasson Professor Franklin Kelly Professor Robert Levine Professor Joshua Shannon © Copyright by Guy Duane Jordan 2007 The thesis or dissertation document that follows has had referenced material removed in respect for the owner's copyright.

  • Eloquence of Mercury and the Enchantments of Venus: Humanitas in Botticelli and Cervantes's Don Quijote, II.10
The Eloquence of Mercury and the Enchantments of Venus: Humanitas in Botticelli and Cervantes's Don Quijote, II.10 Frederick A. de Armas The Pennsylvania State University Although in our century the term "Humanism" has been the subject of 1 so many broad definitions that it has lost much of its specificity and positivity, such was not the case in early modern Europe. In its inception, the term carried with it the excitement and fascination of discovering, editing and coming to an understanding of recently re-discovered works from classical antiquity. The term umanista "was used, in fifteenth century Italian academic jargon, to describe a teacher or student of classical literature and the arts associated with it" (Mann 1996, 1).1 While Kristeller argues "against the repeated attempts to identify Renaissance humanism with the philosophy, science, or the learning of the period as a whole" (1979, 23), more recent studies strive to cautiously broaden the term in its original context, without losing specificity. Countering the view "that Renaissance humanism was a narrowly philological enterprise," Jill Kraye has assembled a collection of essays that shows that it was "a broad intellectual and cultural movement, which contributed to, or at any rate engaged with, disciplines such as biblical studies, political thought, art, science and all branches of philosophy" (1996, xv). As for the value of humanistic endeavors, Petrarch was quite clear in his pronouncement that studia humanitatis, "the study of literature, and in particular classical literature,

(The Landing, Los Angeles) By Carolina A. Miranda SEPTEMBER 29, 2016, 11:00 AM he art of a San Francisco group. Works inspired by a prominent L.A. sci-fi writer. And the powerful prints of a Cuban artist. Plus: photography that touches on the ambiguities of gender, surreal T embroideries and paper puppet theaters. Here are 11 art events to check out in the coming week: “The Rat Bastard Protective Association,” at the Landing. The Rat Bastard Protective Association was a close-knit group of now well-known California artists — including Bruce Conner, Jay DeFeo, Wallace Berman and Joan Brown — that worked together in a building dubbed “Painterland” in San Francisco. Anastasia Aukeman, who wrote a book on the group — “Welcome to Painterland: Bruce Conner and the Rat Bastard Protective Association” — has now organized a group exhibition that brings the group’s works together for the first time since the late 1950s. Opens Saturday at 6 p.m. and runs through Jan. 7. 5118 W.
