How to Shutdown, Silence, and Fly with Your Iphone STR-105 iPhone Basics - How to Shutdown, Silence, and Fly with your iPhone. Picture yourself attending a solemn religious service or quiet concert and suddenly you hear someone else’s phone ringing. It has to be very embarrassing for the phone’s owner. And in this recipe we want to make sure it is not your iPhone ringing at the worst possible time. We want to ensure that you are able to silence your iPhone, shut it down and put it in airplane mode. Let’s explore some of the key operations of your iPhone. Here are five topics that this Senior Tech Recipe will explore: 1. Sleep 2. Shutdown & restart 3. Silence 4. Volume buttons 5. Airplane mode We will focus on these basic operations of your iPhone and take a tour of some of the essential buttons and controls. Sleep The iPhone has a Sleep/Wake that you probably have already been using. The Sleep/Wake button is on the upper right, either on the upper right side on most of the current iPhone models. You might also find it on the upper right top of the iPhone. It will be easy to confirm you have the right button was pressing it will turn your display on and off. When you simply press the Sleep/Wake button on your phone, you are putting your phone to sleep and locking it. This is NOT shutting your phone off. Sleep saves the battery. Sleeps darkens the screen. It will not take action if you touch the screen. It allows you to put your phone in your pocket without making butt calls, that is the accidental placement of a call ​ ​ when a person's mobile phone is in a pocket or handbag. When you put your phone to sleep, the phone is still on and operating. You can still receive phone calls and text messages. SeniorTechClub.com/104 iPhone Sleep, Shutdown, Silence & Airplane Mode Page 2 Wake your phone by pressing the Sleep/Wake button or by pressing the Home button. It is a simple action that will wake your phone and allow you to unlock your phone to make calls or perform other actions. Putting your phone to sleep is an action that you will do frequently. But remember, putting your phone to sleep will not stop your phone from ringing during your church service. Practice: Locate the Sleep/Wake button on your phone and put ​ ​ your iPhone to sleep and wake the phone with either the Sleep/Wake button or the Home button. Shutdown and Restart You normally do not have to shutdown your iPhone regularly. You can often go for many weeks where you do plug your phone in for charging but there is no need to shut it down. But you might shut it down simply because your want peace and quiet or your are instructed to shut it down. There can also be times where your phone is misbehaving or unresponsive and shutting it down may resolve issues. How to shutdown and restart your phone. Shutting down and restarting your phone uses the same Sleep/Wake button, however instead of a tapping it, you will hold it down. Here is the action: 1. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the red slider appears on the screen. 2. Drag the slider to the center of the screen to turn your device off. Your iPhone is now shutting down. Wait a few seconds and press and hold the Sleep/Wake button again until you see the Apple logo on the screen Your phone is now restarting. In a few moments your iPhone will be ready for action. Practice: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button to shut down your ​ iPhone and restart the phone by pressing the same Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears on the screen. Silence your phone. Our third action, is silencing your phone. Another phrase that you may hear is to put your phone on vibrate. This should be your standard action when SeniorTechClub.com/104 iPhone Sleep, Shutdown, Silence & Airplane Mode Page 4 you attend church, a movie or concert where you do not want your phone to ring. This action will turn off the ringer for phone calls, text messages or notifications and replace that action with a quiet vibration. Do recognize that a vibrating phone sitting on a hard surface like a table can still be disruptive to a meeting or event. Ring/Silent switch You will find the Ring/Silent switch on your iPhone on the left side above the volume buttons. Press the slider down toward the back of the phone to put your phone in silent or vibrate mode. When in silent mode (down position) you can see an orange dot and the screen will briefly display: SeniorTechClub.com/104 iPhone Sleep, Shutdown, Silence & Airplane Mode Page 5 In silent mode, the iPhone doesn’t ring or play alerts but but your iPhone will still vibrate. In ring mode, the iPhone plays all sound. Press the slider up or toward the front of the phone to put it in ring mode. The orange dot will disappear and the screen will briefly display: When the ringer is on, your iPhone will play all sounds including calls, texts and other notifications through the speaker. Use the Ring/Silent switch as your standard action when attending a movie, concert, religious service or anyplace where you do not want your iPhone to interrupt the event with rings and notifications. Do remember that when your iPhone vibrates, it can still interrupt a meeting if exposed or sitting on a hard surface. If you need so positively ensure that your iPhone is quiet, consider putting your phone in Airplane Mode (below) or shutting it down. SeniorTechClub.com/104 iPhone Sleep, Shutdown, Silence & Airplane Mode Page 6 Practice: Take your phone in and out of Silent mode. Look for the ​ orange dot and screen verification. Changing the Volume of your iPhone There are times when you simply need to control the volume of your iPhone including the ringer and the volume of all sounds coming from your iPhones speaker. This is accomplished using the two Volume Button on the left edge of your phone. Volume Buttons Find the two volume buttons on the left edge of your phone just below the Ring/Silent switch. The upper button increases the volume, and the lower one decreases it. ● During a phone call, the buttons adjust the loudness of the caller with whom you are speaking. ● During other times, the buttons change the loudness of the ringer, alerts, music and other sounds that play through either your iPhone’s speaker or attached headsets or speakers. Watch the screen as you adjust the volume and note the volume indicator on the Ringer indicator that appears on your screen. If you are ever embarrassed because your phone rings at a bad time, tap either of the volume buttons to quickly silence your iPhone. Then take your time to use the Ring/Silent switch to turn off the ringer. Practice: Ask someone to call you or use another phone to call your ​ iPhone so that you can adjust the volume of the ring. SeniorTechClub.com/104 iPhone Sleep, Shutdown, Silence & Airplane Mode Page 8 Airplane Mode Since 2013 airlines have allowed you to use your iPhones in the plane, gate to gate, provided that the device is in airplane mode or the cellular connection is disabled. The specific instructions may vary between airlines and you should listen to those pre-flight instructions. But placing your iPhone in airplane mode will allow you to comply with airline regulations by turning off cellular service, Wi-Fi and bluetooth. Use the Control Center The easiest and quickest method for putting your phone in airplane mode is to use the Control Center. You access the Control Center by swiping up from the bottom of the any screen. You will find a number of very useful functions available in the Control Center. Place your finger next to the Home button 2. Slowly swipe up to reveal the control center. 3. Put your iPhone into Airplane Mode by tapping the airplane icon. It will turn orange. If Wifi and Bluetooth had been on previously, you will see those icons turn from blue to gray. 4. Put the Control Center away by pressing the Home button or by swiping down on the Control Center. With your iPhone is airplane mode, you can use it to read, play games, watch a downloaded video or listen to music stored on your phone. When you phone is in airplane mode, you will see an airplane icon on the upper left corner of your screen. Friends and family will NOT be able to reach you when your iPhone is in airplane mode. Take your iPhone out of airplane mode by accessing the Control Center and tapping on the orange airplane icon. If you watch your phone, you can see cellular, wifi and bluetooth come alive.

    National Security Agency | Cybersecurity Information Limiting Location Data Exposure Mobile devices store and share device geolocation data by design. This data is essential to device communications and provides features—such as mapping applications—that users consider indispensable. Mobile devices determine location through any combination of Global Positioning System (GPS) and wireless signals (e.g., cellular, wireless (Wi-Fi®1), or Bluetooth®2 (BT)). Location data can be extremely valuable and must be protected. It can reveal details about the number of users in a location, user and supply movements, daily routines (user and organizational), and can expose otherwise unknown associations between users and locations. Mitigations reduce, but do not eliminate, location tracking risks in mobile devices. Most users rely on features disabled by such mitigations, making such safeguards impractical. Users should be aware of these risks and take action based on their specific situation and risk tolerance. When location exposure could be detrimental to a mission, users should prioritize mission risk and apply location tracking mitigations to the greatest extent possible. While the guidance in this document may be useful to a wide range of users, it is intended primarily for NSS/DoD system users.3 Mobile devices expose location data Using a mobile device—even powering it on—exposes location data.
