Dicranum scoparium and Porella platyphylla taxa of bryophytes were used in the present study carried out to determine the free radical scavenging activities, fatty acid, and vitamin contents. In this study, it was aimed to underline the importance of bryophytes for scientific literature and to provide a basis for further studies on this subject. The data obtained in this study indicate that the DPPH radical scavenging effect of D. scoparium taxon is significantly higher than that of P. platyphylla taxon. It is known that there is a strong relationship between the phenolic compound content of methanol extracts of the plants and the DPPH radical scavenging efficiency. When the fatty acid contents were examined, it was observed that levels of all unsaturated fatty acids were higher in the P. platyphylla taxon than the D. scoparium taxon, except for α-Linolenic acid. When the vitamin contents of species were compared, it was determined that D-3, α -tocopherol, stigmasterol, betasterol amount was higher in Dicranum taxon. Previous contributions collectively reveal 122 taxa distributed in 36 genera and 24 families. Of these © Alam et al. (2016) 118 taxa (97.52%) are belonging to the Marchantiophyta, while the rest of 4 species (3.30%) members to Anthocerophyta. Crandall-Stotler and Stotler (2000), Grolle and Long (2000) for Europe and Macaronesia and Schuster (2002) for Austral Hepaticae represent three previously widely used yet differing opinions regarding Lophoziaceae classification. They thus reflect a useful account of some of the motivation for initiating this project in the first place. (2) Concurrently or soon after chapter 2 was published by de Roo et al. (2007)2 more recent relevant papers were published. These include Heinrichs et al. (2007) already referred to in chapter 4, and notably Vilnet et al. (2008)3 examining the phylogeny and systematics of the genus Lophozia s. str. The plethora of new information regarding taxa included in this thesis is encouraging and with each new publication we gain insight and a clearer understanding these fascinating little plants. This is the first record of this species from Kerala. Key words: Kerala, little known, new record, Porella perrottetiana, Porellaceae INTRODUCTION Porella is the best known and widely distributed tropical genus of the order Porellales with about 60 species in the world and 27 taxa in India (Dan- dotiya et al. 2011, Daniels 2010, Nair et al. 2005, Singh and Nath 2007, Singh and Singh 2006, 2015). Chopra (1943) recorded a few species from South India. Most of the genera earlier reported from South India were under Madotheca and Hattori (1978, 1979) synonymised all the species known under Madotheca to Porella. Hence a total of eight species, one variety and one subspecies viz., Porella acutifolia (Lehm. et Lindenb.) Trevis. var. acutifolia, Porella caespitans (Steph.) S. Hatt. var. cordifolia (Steph.) S. Siles. Sci. Natur., 68: 11-24, 2019. Abstract: A new bryophyte checklist for Afghanistan is presented, including all published records since the beginning of collection activities in 1839 ‒1840 by W. Griffith till present. Considering several unidentified collections in various herbaria, 23 new records for Afghanistan together with the collection data can be added to the flora. Beside a new genus, Asterella , the new records include Amblystegium serpens var. serpens, Brachythecium erythrorrhizon, Bryum dichotomum, B. elwendicum, B. pallens, B. weigelii, Dichodontium palustre, Didymodon luridus, D. tectorum, Distichium inclinatum, Entosthodon muhlenbergii, Hygroamblystegium fluviatile subsp. fluviatile, Oncophorus virens, Orthotrichum rupestre var. sturmii, Pogonatum urnigerum, Pseudocrossidium revolutum, Pterygoneurum ovatum, Schistidium rivulare, Syntrichia handelii, Tortella inflexa, T. tortuosa, and Tortula muralis subsp. obtusifolia . Therewith the number of species increase to 24 liverworts, 246 mosses and one hornwort. In addition, a historical overview of the country's exploration and a full biogeography of Afghan bryophytes is given. Key words: Bryophytes, checklist, flora, phytodiversity. Introduction Recording, documentation, identification and classification of organisms is a primary tool and essential step in plant sciences and ecology to obtain detailed knowledge on the flora of a country. linnaeus’ Philosophia Botanica STEPHEN FREER Stephen Freer, born at Little Compton in1920, was a classical scholar at Eton and Trinity College Cambridge. In 1940, he was approached by the Foreign Office and worked at Bletchley Park and in London. Later, Stephen was employed by the Historical Manuscripts Commission, retiring in 1962 due to ill health. He has continued to work since then, first as a volunteer for the MSS department of the Bodleian Library with Dr William Hassall, and then on a part-time basis at the Oxfordshire County Record. In 1988, he was admitted as a lay reader in the Diocese of Oxford. His previous book was a translation of Wharton’s Adenographia, published by OUP in 1996. A fellow of the Linneau Society of London, Stephen lives with his wife Frederica in Gloucestershire. They have a daughter, Isabel. COVER ILLUSTRATION Rosemary Wise, who designed and painted the garland of flowers on the book cover, is the botanical illustrator in the Department of Plant Sciences in the University of Oxford, associate staff at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, and a fellow of the Linneau Society of London. In1932 Carl Linnaeus made an epic journey to Lapland, the vast area across arctic Norway, Sweden, and Finland. In 1988, to mark the bicentenary of the Linneau Society of London, a group from Great Britain and Sweden retraced his route. Rosemary, was the official artist and the flowers featured here are taken from ones painted at that time, plants with which Linnaeus would have been familiar. A floristic inventory of the bryophyte flora in the Big Thicket National Preserve, Hardin, Polk, and Tyler Counties, Texas, was conducted from January 2007 to September 2011. This inventory resulted in an updated checklist of 179 species of hornworts, liverworts, and mosses, in 98 genera and 54 families. Thirteen potentially new state records, twelve (12) liverworts and one (1) moss, are reported. INTRODUCTION The “big thicket” region of southeast Texas has long been referred to as a biological crossroads. Situated as the intersection of several distinct eco-regions; the area harbors a unique mix of plants and animals indicative of the southeastern swamps, eastern forests, central plains, and the southwestern United States. Its biota includes species from tropical and subtropical biomes, as well as those characteristic of the arid west (Gunter 1993). The region also represents the western-most extension of the southeastern evergreen forests (McCleod 1971), and is the western boundary for distributions of many aquatic insects with largely eastern affinities (Abbott et al. 1997). The Big Thicket National Preserve (BITH), founded in 1974, seeks to preserve the fragmented remnants of a once much larger and contiguous region of natural ecosystems.
