That means it also appeals to new target groups who want a “grown-up” car.

6 Design

Expressive design meets flexibility The Opel Meriva is the first car to pack the full versatility of a small monocab into a dynamic and expressive design. It is a logical expression and interpretation of the Opel design language successfully introduced by the Insignia and the Astra.

• The windscreen is pulled forward, forming an unbroken line with the bonnet, which bears the characteristic Opel centre crease, delivering optimum outward vision. • The eagle-eye headlights are similar to those of the Opel Astra, adding a high quality appearance and incorporating the “wing” shape daylight running lights that are a part of the current Opel design signature. • The form of the headlights is echoed by the openings carrying the fog lamps. • The trapezoid grille with the broad chrome strip housing the 3-D form of the Opel logo conveys self-confidence. • The V form of the grille and front bumper also carry an Opel family resemblance.

Arguments • Expressive, highly functional design • Impressive headlights and daylight running lights • Self-confident impression with high brand identity

Powerful and high class The rear design underlines the individuality and premium character of the new Opel Meriva. Right from the first glance the rec- ognisably wider track conveys a dynamic, powerful impression.

• The rear window is framed by a V-formed graphic that draws attention to the 3-D Opel logo and includes the number plate. • The rear window glass is visually extended by a high-gloss black panel which increases the perception of its size. • The three-dimensional rear light cluster extends into the shoulder area and reflects the Opel specific design of the front lights. The horizontal line of the tailgate chrome bar is complemented by the reversing light lenses, creating a greater impression of width.

Arguments • High-quality rear design highlighting the premium appearance • Wider, more powerful stance • Impressive Opel typical design details

Portal doors, a brief history Due to their convenience opposite opening portal doors eased access to the rear seats even in the days of horse-drawn carriages. They were also common on early luxury cars. However, as automotive performance in- creased the door lock technology did not keep pace. Due to the resulting safety concerns they were banned in 1961.

London taxi Mini Clubman One exception was made for the legendary London taxis, to enable the passengers to enter comfortably even when wearing a hat. Since 2006 a new ECE regulation ensuring maximum safety and security opened the path for the reintroduction of rear-hinged doors. They are an outstanding feature of the new Rolls-Royce Phantom and have been seen on special models from, among others, Mazda and Mini.

The new Opel Meriva with the FlexDoors® Rolls-Royce Phantom New Opel Meriva system is the first vehicle that offers the advantages of portal doors with inde pendent opening. Comparison access areas FlexDoors® system

15 The FlexDoors® system. The highest priority is safety.

Smart advanced safety logic ® System overview FlexDoors Meriva customers, whether old or young, have a high level of safety consciousness. With this in mind the safety systems of the new Opel Meriva received high priority. They were conceived to deliver maximum safety under all imaginable circumstances, without disturbing the comfort or demanding more attention from the driver or passengers. To fulfil this aim Opel engineers worked together with one of the world’s leading research institutes.

The Fraunhofer Institute IPA has developed much of the underlying technology that we use every day without thinking about it. For example the MP3 technology that enabled today’s leading audio technology.

The FlexDoors® safety system developed in combination with the Fraunhofer Institute contains the analysed data from some 1,000 system configurations and activities. Specially constructed robots were used for Electronic Control Module Radio/chime all the long-term component tests to ensure the functional reliability and safety of the ABS/ESP®Plus Lock mechanical closing elements and the elec- Body Control Module/Monitoring Electronics Door opening handles with proximity sensor tronic control modules.

17 More ergonomic advantages. Ideal surroundings.

Premium-class adjustment The standard driver’s seat of the new Opel 60 mm Meriva sets new class standards. It is directly derived from the current generation of Opel seating first seen on the Insignia. It is not only supremely comfortable and supportive, it also has the longest travel and height adjustment in this segment: • 240 mm travel • 65 mm height adjustment (best in class)

Together with the standard tilt and telescope steering column and the high mounted shifter, this enables every driver to find their ideal driving position, while enjoying a level of comfort previously only available in premium- class cars.

65 mm 240 mm

Ergonomics certified by the AGR Another unique feature of the new Opel Meriva are the optional ergonomic sports seats. These are certified by the German medical association AGR (Aktion Gesunder Rücken e.V.). The certificate is a special mark of quality, exclusively granted by this expert and independent commission con- sisting of leading doctors and therapists.

The most important precondition for the certification is that the contours of the seat back can be adjusted to fit exactly to the natural position of the backbone vertebrae. The 4-way electropneumatic adjustment operation of the integrated back support cushion ensures this, allowing every occupant to find an ideal seating position. Together with the extra-long travel and in- dependently adjustable seat cushion and seat back, this delivers fully individual seat- ing comfort. Additional comfort is provided by an adjust- able forward extension cushion that supports the thighs.

18 Ergonomics

Improved all-round vision In addition to the high seating position, good external vision is a major buying con- sideration for monocab customers. The large, forward mounted windscreen with slim A pillars and wide triangular front side win- dows, together with the deep lower window line and generous glass area of the rear doors, ensures optimal all-round external vision.

Intuitive operation The gear lever of the new Opel Meriva has been mounted higher, ensuring that the hand falls directly and comfortably onto it. In addition the shallow angle of the centrally mounted controls for the infotainment and air conditioning enables optimal ergonomic operation.

The following ergonomic details also help make the driving day easier. • The large 7˝ colour display of the navigation system is set into the dashboard in such a way that it is always in easy view of the driver, without distracting him from the road. • The controls for the power windows are not vertical, but installed at the natural angle taken by the hand as it reaches for them.

Certified ergonomy: the Meriva Ergonomic System The Aktion Gesunder Rücken (AGR) e.V. – a commission of independent specialist doctors and therapists – has awarded the Meriva Ergonomic System the AGR Certificate of Excellence for the exemplary overall ergonomics in new Opel Meriva.

The Meriva Ergonomic System is comprised of: • FlexSpace® • FlexDoors® • Ergonomic sports seats • When fitted, the integrated FlexFix® bicycle carrier has also been recognised as an additional component of this certi- fied system.

This is the first time that the AGR has awarded its Certificate of Excellence for an overall Arguments concept, rather than individual components, • Class-leading adjustment of the thus recognizing the ergonomic merit of the front seats complete vehicle. • Tilt and telescope steering column is standard equipment • Exclusive ergonomic AGR-certified front seats • Much improved external vision • Ideally positioned gear lever and controls

19 Versatility has many names. FlexSpace®, Flex Floor and FlexFix®.

FlexSpace®, often copied – now improved Comfortable 5-seater, luxurious 4-seater or maximum storage room. The FlexSpace® system sets the standards for interior flexi- bility for the whole class. The basic advantage of FlexSpace®, that the rear seats stay in the car and fold into the floor to give a flat load space, remains unchanged. The system was optimised for easier and more intuitive operation.

• The back seats can be folded as easily from the passenger cabin as from the luggage compartment. This was not possible previously. • Only one unlocking operation is necessary to fold the seat backs and the seats into the floor, on the current Meriva two opera- tions are needed. • The outer seats can be moved independ- ently forward to create more space in the luggage compartment. • When the centre seat is folded, sliding the outer seats backwards automatically brings them closer to each other, so giving extra leg- and shoulderroom for maximum 4-seater comfort.

20 Flexibility

Flex Floor luggage compartment In standard configuration, with the rear seats raised, the load volume is a generous 400 litres (VDA), which can be enlarged in stages to a full 1,500 litres.

• An especially practical feature is the load- space floor. In the higher position, with the rear seats folded flat, it offers a flat load space, making loading and unloading easier. Under the floor there is a covered compartment, offering another 86 litres of useful storage. • A retractable hook in the side wall is ideally placed to take a shopping bag. It also holds the floor in the upright position easing access to the underfloor storage. • In the lower setting higher loads can be carried, and the luggage-space availability behind the rear seats is maximised. • Closed storage compartments in the side walls of the luggage compartment are standard on the new Opel Meriva. • A hard cargo tray with anti-slip surface protects the interior against dirt and wet Floor flat for easy loading items. 21 Impressive and convincing storage. An innovative concept. Plus up to 32 possibilities.

FlexRail® centre console A standard feature of the new Opel Meriva is the advantageous electric parking brake. One of the benefits gained from this is that in combination with the high mounted gear lever, a large storage space is freed between the front seats. The unique new FlexRail® aluminium rail system uses this to maximum advantage, providing highly versatile modular multi-level storage capacity.

• In the standard lower console there are two cupholders and two storage spaces for mobile phones, MP3 players, etc., with 12-V power outlet and optional aux-in and USB connection. • From Enjoy onwards the aluminium rails of the FlexRail® system are added. It holds an extra cupholder module that can be slid and positioned anywhere in the system, FlexRail® centre armrest allowing it to be used by front or back seat occupants. • The Cosmo has an additional module: a comfortable armrest with a closed storage. It can be slid and fixed in position anywhere along the upper rails for maximum comfort and convenience. • When the cupholders and armrest are pushed rearwards, a roomy, protected storage space between the rails offers easily accessible space for a notebook computer or a handbag. Armrest storage Movable cupholder • When not needed, all the moveable com- ponents can be easily and quickly removed. • The console lighting ensures that even at night there is illumination enough to find whatever is stored. • A special adapter for the middle rear seat back allows the modular FlexRail® armrest and cupholder modules to be mounted on the forward folded seat back for the rear passengers.

22 Flexibility

Up to 32 storage possibilities Easily reached, flexible and usefully sized storage spaces that can cope with almost any realistic and everyday demand were given the highest priority in the new Opel Meriva. • Opel researches issued a questionnaire to over 400 customers to define the most frequently used items in a car. • The aim was to find an easy accessible place for the top 20 items of their requirements.

With up to 32 open and closed storage possibilities this aim was not only met, it was comfortably surpassed. In addition to the FlexRail® centre console, the new Opel Meriva offers: • Front door pockets with 1.5-litre PET bottle capacity • Driver’s open and closed personal dash- board storage Divided glove box with anti-slip mats • Divided glove box with coin/pen holders, the handbook can be stored on a separate shelf • Front passenger dashboard storage • Storage box under driver’s seat • Under-seat tray for front passenger • Driver’s sunglasses holder • Rear door pockets with 1-l bottle capacity • Front seat back pockets

23 New Opel Meriva. Convenience, comfort and refinement.

Comfort is not a matter of class Even the small cars and vans attract customers who want a high level of comfort and equipment that not only makes the car more attractive in everyday use, but also adds to its prestige and value.

Heated steering wheel One of the class-leading comfort features of the new Opel Meriva is the heated leather steering wheel, offered in combination with the temperature-selectable heated front seats. The heat quickly builds to the operating temperature, not only making the driver feel good, but also making gloves (which can compromise steering wheel grip) redundant. This factor also makes the heated steering wheel an extra safety feature.

Quickheat heating system For clear vision and a warm cabin on cold winter days, the electronically controlled Quickheat heating system delivers fast de-icing, demisting and optimal warmth.

Manual air conditioning The air recirculation of the manual air con- ditioning is push-button operated and also has an electronically controlled compressor to reduce fuel consumption.

25 New Opel Meriva. Advanced passive and active safety.

Passive safety The basis of passive safety in the new Opel Meriva is a rigid passenger cell that has minimum deformation, providing maximum protection to all occupants. • Within and around this high-tensile steels are used. • In a front or rear collision crumple zones absorb and diffuse crash energy through- out the structure. • Special deformation elements front and rear absorb energy in low-impact crashes, so saving money on repair costs.

Repair-friendly construction The new Opel Meriva follows the recommen- dations of the Research Council for Automobile Repairs (RCAR), an international organisation of insurers. The bumpers are mounted to avoid over- or under-running another vehicle in case of an accident. In addition expensive parts such as the headlights and radiator, special mounting elements that react to a low speed accident, guard them against damage. The advantage of this is that the new Opel Meriva receives lower vehicle insurance premium classification.

Adaptive brake lights and automatic hazard warning lights The adaptive brake lights warn following traffic by blinking rapidly (5 x per second), when the ABS is activated at over 30 km/h. The new Opel Meriva is equipped with front and side airbags for driver and front pas- senger, from Enjoy curtain airbags are also standard. The front passenger airbag can be switch-deactivated for child seat use. A special safety feature is the use of double pre-tensioned front seat belts. In a crash, these keep the driver and front passenger in the ideal position for the airbags to offer optimal protection. All the seats in the new Opel Meriva are equipped with seat-belt warning. 26 Safety

Active safety The chassis of the new Opel Meriva is signifi- cantly improved in all criteria. Architectural components are carried over from current Opel Zafira, with wider track in front and rear. In line with the longer wheelbase the customer benefits from higher ride comfort, improved steering precision and greater active safety. The new chassis allows wheel sizes up to 18˝ and ensures a high level of driving dynamics.

The steering system has been changed from the current Meriva which has an Electric Power Steering system (EPS) to an Electro-Hydraulic Power Steering system (EHPS) to be able to accommodate the increased size and loads.

Besides active safety, maximum passive safety was also a main development target: the new Opel Meriva features larger brake sizes in comparison to the current car.

27 New Opel Meriva. Engines and transmissions.

More power, less consumption, increased fun A wider choice of engines means the new Opel Meriva offers something for everyone in terms of power. The three petrol 1.4 ECOTEC® engines offer an excellent balance of economy and perform- ance and all meet Euro 5 emission standard. All have 16-valve technology and all reflect the Opel philosophy of downsizing for increased all-round economy.

Efficiency is optimised by the use of light- weight components such as hollow crank and camshafts and by the reduction of internal friction. The range starts with the naturally aspirated 1.4 ECOTEC® with 74 kW (100 hp). This features dual cam phasing, close coupled catalytic converter and inte- grated inlet port deactivation flaps among other economy and performance boosting measures.

Manual transmissions For good economy and driveability both 5- and 6-speed manual transmissions are available. All gearboxes include triple cone synchronisation on first and second gear for easy engagement, while the 6-speed has synchronised reverse gear.

Automatic transmission A newly calibrated 6-speed automatic trans- mission is offered with the 1.7 CDTI ECOTEC® with 74 kW (100 hp). On the road, a wide selection of shift patterns is adapted to the style and habits of the driver. The electronic control will also adapt to the prevailing road conditions. ActiveSelect® allows sequential driver gear selection via the gear lever.

28 Engines and transmissions

Diesel engines ECOTEC® diesel engines range from two super frugal 1.3 CDTI of 55 kW (75 hp) and 70 kW (95 hp) to three 1.7 CDTI. All but the 75 hp version share cutting-edge multi-injection common rail systems, variable geometry turbo chargers, DOHC 16 valve and electronic EGR technology and meet Euro 5 emission standard.

The 1.7 CDTI ECOTEC® engines offer a choice of 74 kW (100 hp), 81 kW (110 hp) or 96 kW (130 hp). Among the advances are electric throttle control and electronically controlled EGR. All three engines deliver outstanding economy together with excellent perform- ance characteristics.

41 Innovations in the new Opel Meriva. Facts and background.

In terms of making advanced technology available to a broad range of customers, Opel is a pioneer.

Features that we take for granted today, for instance ABS, full-size airbags and standard catalytic converters, were first introduced across the whole model range by Opel.

The new Opel Meriva also boasts a host of ground-breaking innovations and features. But alongside them you will find advances that were first developed for other successful Opel models. These include the seats, first seen in the Opel Insignia, or the FlexFix® bi- cycle carrier and the heated steering wheel successfully introduced on the current Corsa.

These new and established features are not mere luxury novelties, rather the reaction of Opel to concrete facts that influence the everyday use of the cars. This makes them valid and convincing buying arguments.

43 Competitive comparison. New Opel Meriva vs. Citroën C3 Picasso.

Citroën C3 Picasso Available since 2008. As opposed to the new Opel Meriva the Citroën C3 Picasso is based upon the Peugeot 207 platform, a small car. In their advertising Citroën speaks of the “Space Box” concept, emphasising the usage potential of the cubic proportions.

Press reaction Strengths: • Interior flexibility • Driving comfort • Overall visibility

Weaknesses: • Seats with short squabs and little side support • Lack of steering feel • Stability in curves • Small rear doors/difficult access

Flexibility As with the new Opel Meriva the seats auto- matically sink into the floor when folded forward. This provides a flat load space with load volume that ranges between 385 and 1,506 litres. The rear seat is split 60 : 40 and therefore unlike the new Opel Meriva there is no 4-seat configuration with extra leg- and shoulderroom. Although the Citroën C3 Picasso offers a wide range of storage possibilities, innovative flexibility features such as the modular FlexRail® centre console and the integrated FlexFix® rear carrier system of the new Opel Meriva are not available.

1 Available as of August 2010. 45 Competitive comparison. New Opel Meriva vs. Renault Scénic.

Renault Scénic The third generation Renault Scénic has been available since spring 2009. It belongs in the compact van sector and is comparable in both interior and exterior size to the new Opel Meriva.

Press reaction Strengths: • Spaciousness • Storage • Equipment

Weakness: • Lack of steering feel

Flexibility Like the new Opel Meriva the Renault Scénic has three individual rear seats that slide and have adjustable seat backs. The rear seats fold forward to give extra load space, but to reach the maximum load volume they have to be removed from the vehicle. As with the Opel Meriva the Renault Scénic can be configured as a 4-seater with extra leg- and shoulderroom. The middle seat does not fold flat, but must be completely removed. There is a centre console (Vario box) system available, but no integrated bicycle carrier like Opel Meriva’s FlexFix® system.

1 Available as of August 2010. 2 160 hp version available as well. 47 Competitive comparison. New Opel Meriva vs. VW Golf Plus.

VW Golf Plus The VW Golf Plus is based upon the Golf V and received a facelift in 2009, giving it the head- lamp treatment of the current Golf VI. At the same time the interior was slightly altered.

Press reaction Strengths: • Image • Driving comfort • Driving safety • Engines • Depreciation

Weaknesses: • Standard equipment • Price • Conventional design • Limited variability

Flexibility The interior flexibility of the VW Golf Plus is limited to the asymmetrically divided, sliding and rake-adjustable rear seat, which can be folded forward to give a flat load space. That the rear seat is only divided in 2 gives the new Opel Meriva an immediate advantage, as it is not possible to achieve a 4-seat con- figuration with extra leg- and shoulderroom. The rear centre armrest can also be used as a table. Innovative flexibility features such as the modular FlexRail® centre console and the integrated FlexFix® rear carrier system of the new Opel Meriva are not available for the VW Golf Plus.

1 Available as of August 2010. 49 Competitive comparison. New Opel Meriva vs. Renault Grand Modus.

Renault Grand Modus The Renault Grand Modus is a longer version of the Renault Modus and has been available since 2008. Spaciousness and variability are highlighted in the advertising.

Press reaction Strengths: • Price • Economical

Weaknesses: • Restricted variability • Perceived interior quality • Conventional design

Flexibility In comparison to the new Opel Meriva the interior concept of the Renault Grand Modus leaves much to be desired. The rear seat bench slides, but is not divided, so that no individual rear seat positioning is possible. The 60 : 40 split rear seat back is rake-adjustable to allow different luggage capacities, but in the standard configuration the available 305-litres capacity is noticeably smaller than that of the new Opel Meriva. To achieve a flat load space the undivided rear seat bench must be folded forward. This is only possible when the front seats are in an uncomfortable forward position. Storage facilities for driver and front passenger are restricted, innovative flexibility features such as the modular FlexRail® centre console and the integrated FlexFix® rear carrier system of the new Opel Meriva are not available for the Renault Grand Modus. 1 Available as of August 2010. 51 Competitive comparison. Opel Meriva vs. Mercedes A-Class.

Mercedes A-Class In the 2009 model year, the Mercedes A-Class was technically and optically refreshed. Given its design over the years, the A-Class appeals mainly to older buyers. To address this, Mercedes has announced they will launch a more modern and sporting model in 2012.

Flexibility The 5 door Mercedes A-Class has a conven tional interior concept. The rear seat is asymmetrically divided. The rear seat cushions are folded forward, before the rear seat backrests are folded forward to present a level load area. The EASY VARIO-PLUS system is an extra cost option, which allows the rear seats to be removed. Contrary to the new Opel Meriva, the rear seats are not adjustable and there is no possibility of creating a four seat, comfort configuration with increased shoulder- and legroom in the rear of the vehicle. Innovative flexibility features such as the Opel Meriva’s modular FlexRail® centre console or the fully integrated FlexFix® rear carrier system are not available for the Mercedes A-Class.
