90th Anniversary Celebration!! Save the Date - August 10-11, 2012 2 CAPE COD SEA CAMPS 2012 ALUMNI NEWSLETTER CC SC

Nancy Garran Camp Director

Dear Alumni, Parents and Friends “Best 90 Years Ever”………………. A tagline used for the 90th Anniversary summer celebration in 2012 at the Cape Cod Sea Camps – Monomoy and Wono – celebrating 90 years of serving youth in an outdoor setting on beauti - ful Cape Cod. Taglines as described by Wikipedia are for “creating a memorable phrase that will reinforce the audi - ence’s memory of a product. Some taglines are successful enough to warrant inclusion in popular culture.” Although our tagline may not rise to the level of mainstream pop culture, for those of us who are a part of the Cape Cod Sea Camps family, there is an informal consensus that each summer is “Our Best Summer Ever!” which is the genesis of our 90th Anniversary slogan. Since 1922 there has been a camp community experience on the shores of Cape Cod, inviting children and young adults to spend a summer playing, living together and learning new and untried skills in a uniquely American envi - ronment – a summer recreational camp. As Peg Smith, American Camp Association Chief Executive Officer writes, “Community is the fabric of camp!” Each summer we strive to develop positive values, build character, increase accountability for personal actions, expand on leadership opportunities, cultivate independent thinking and prepare youth with life skills such as resilience, team work, coping mechanisms and so much more. The community we estab - lish each summer, as we have over the past 90 years, knits together a new group of children and staff who focus on creating a world of learning with six key practices that resonate each summer – enrichment and physical activity, real world applications and hands on experiences, incorporation of curricular standards such as sailing and tennis awards, and trained staff. Ninety years ago, my grandparents, Capt. and Mrs. Del, dedicated themselves to serving youth and passionately believed in the educational and spiritual value of a camp community with properly constructed recreational activi - ties. Capt. Del understood that every child needs to be best at something, whether hitting a baseball the furthest, sail - ing a course the quickest, swimming a distance the fastest or simply having the most perfect bed in camp. His innate sense of what was good and useful for children allowed him to see into children’s hearts and understand what was important to them, as individuals and as a part of a community. Although there have been many changes and tran - sitions over the last 90 years, the result of what Cape Cod Sea Camps embodies far surpasses anything my grandfather could have imagined with more than 1500 different campers crossing our threshold each summer and 250 different staff. Yet it is Capt. and Mrs. Del’s principles of excellence and industry, their unflagging dedication to providing children with unique recreational, educational opportunities in a supportive, nurturing setting which inform everything that happens today at the Cape Cod Sea Camps. Capt. Del originally coined the phrase “Best Summer Ever” as a way to describe the advantages and positive out - comes his “boys” experienced at Monomoy each season. The Cape Cod Sea Camps are pre-eminent today because of Delahanty commitment, tenacity, dedication, character and passionate belief in the positive legacy of the camp community. This summer we will celebrate the “Best 90 Years Ever” with an Alumni Weekend on August 10-11, but we will also cheer on the next 90 years –the best is yet ahead – resting squarely on the foundation built by the campers and staff who came before. We encourage your connection to Cape Cod Sea Camps and if you have a friend interested in our programs or would like current information, please let us know, visit us in person or check out our website at www.capecodseacamps.com . Thank you for being a part of our camp family and cheers to a healthy, happy and prosperous New Year – our 90th Anniversary Year! Looking forward to greeting many of you this summer on the shores of Cape Cod Bay.

From my council ring to yours,

Nancy W.N Garnracny Executive Director CAPE COD SEA CAMPS 2012 ALUMNI NEWSLETTER 3 SC CC

December, 2011 Dear FriendGs, rant W. Koch $cholarship Fund Report As a result of your generosity to the Grant W. Koch Scholarship Fund, last summer it was possible for 20 children to enjoy camp at CCSC Resident Camp, the Monomoy Day Camp, Brewster Day Camp, and Camp Farley. That’s a wonderful achievement, and it made a real difference for the scholarship campers. mother wrote, “You all do a great job and have expanded the children’s horizons!” Another said, “I’m writing to thank you personally for awarding the camp scholarship to my son…. It’s such a wonderful opportunity for him & we’re both happy & excited. I appreciate your generous consideration.”

Without the scholarships you provide through your contributions to the Scholarship Fund, these deserving children would not have had the opportunities they did. YOU made the difference, and the thanks go to you!

The struggling economy continues to handicap us, both in terms of investment income and contributions. As some of our friends have been forced to diminish the size of their gifts, it’s necessary to broaden our donor base if we hope to maintain the current level of scholarship funding. If you have given in the past, please give again. If you’ve never made a contribution, please make one now. No gift is too small; every dollar makes a difference! Our administrative costs are nominal, which means your gifts support the scholarships directly on almost a dollar-for-dollar basis. And they make a big difference to the children who receive them, and also to the camps of which the children are a part.

Thank you for your consideration. We, and the children, appreciate your generous support. Sincerely, Michael Halperson, Trustee Rick Francis, Trustee Note: an envelope is attached to this newsletter addressed to the GWK Fund for your convenience.

GET INVOLVED IN THE 90TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION OF CAMP and SUPPORT THE GRANT W. KOCH SCHOLARSHIP FUND. We are looking for volunteers to help out with the two fundraising events for the GWK Scholarship Fund this coming 90th Anniversary Alumni Weekend and with the planning of our 90th Anniversary Celbration. Please let us know if you want to get involved!! The GWK Charity Golf Tournament at Ocean Edge: David Peterson, Henri Rauschenbach and Evan Mead, the organizing team for the GWK Charity Golf Tournament, are look - ing for golfers or GWK supporters who want to support our efforts for GWK by identifying teams of golfers, naming spon - sors, sponsors for holes and who can help us with the organization of this event. The details are as follows: 12 teams: (1) Tournament Title sponsor (2) Platinum sponsors (3) Gold sponsors (18) Hole sponsors We are also going to need assistance with planning this event, searching out sponsors, marketing the event and organizing the goody bags etc. So…if you can help us out that would be great. Please be with Henri at [email protected]; [email protected] ; or [email protected]

The GWK Silent Auction: Christie Peterson and Henri Rauschenbach are coordinating the GWK Silent Auction for the 90th Anniversary of CCSC. We have run Silent Auctions for the past 3 Anniversary Reunions of the Camps and have always had significant support from our Alumni. There have been great donations to the Auction in the past: a weekend at a ski resort, sports memorabilia, tickets to sporting contests, dinners with celebrities, Claire Murray rugs, and on and on. We are looking alumni who are willing to make a contribution/donation to the Auction (that will be tax deductible). If you have an item of interest, please get in touch with [email protected] or Henri at [email protected]

90th Anniversary Alumni Reunion Spring Planning Committee Meeting: Our Alumni Working Group is planning a spring meeting on Saturday April 14TH at Camp. Frank Lajoie The Sea Meadow Inn Retires fromCCSC Board of Directors Nancy Garran is pleased to announce new ownership of – and a new/old name for - the Isaiah Clark House in Brewster, MA by the Delahanty family. But first a little history.

“My grandparents, Robert and Emma Delahanty, started their journey in the camping business on Cape Cod 90 years ago and moved Camp Monomoy for Boys from Harwich to Brewster in 1926. Thirteen years later, they opened Camp Wono for Girls on the site of the Wild Acres estate just down the beach from Monomoy, which is now part of Nickerson State Park and adja - cent to our Linger Longer cottage and apartment rental resort. This new purchase of a Bed & Breakfast Inn in Brewster marks a further commitment to provide quality lodging for seasonal visitors to Cape Cod”.

Following a successful summer season in its first year of operation, the Sea Meadow Inn is pleased to announce the appoint - ment of David Baldwin as resident innkeeper. Joined by his partner, Jim Perry, the pair comes to the Sea Meadow Inn with a wealth of hospitality experience and a genuine desire to make every guest feel special. As David often mentions, “Innkeeping is not a job, it is a lifestyle.” Honing his skills in Florida at Silver Resorts and in New York at the Catskill Lodge, both small family-owned properties, David has the skills and desire to ensure every guest’s getaway to the Cape is memorable and enjoy - able. His attention to detail and willingness to work hard to exceed his guests’ expectations guarantees each stay at the Sea Meadow Inn will be as special to returning friends as it will for new guests.

David looks forward to welcoming you to the Inn and hopes the new rate structure, change in minimum nights, and seasonal specials will entice you to stay sooner rather than later. Although rates have gone down for the shoulder seasons, the same high level service (and delicious breakfasts) you expect will be continued. If you haven’t signed on as a Friend on Facebook, we encourage you to do so to learn what specials we are offering, and general news of the Inn and the Brewster area. Soon to come will be a new website with updated information and pictures.

Our rooms have now been redecorated in Cape Cod themes while honoring Captain Isaiah Clark’s legacy by retaining the names of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren for our rooms. It is this blend of history with modern amenities that makes the Sea Meadow Inn a special place.

In addition to environmentally friendly practices and recycling paper, plastics, cardboard and other materials to reduce our contribution to the waste stream, the Sea Meadow Inn is pleased to join the efforts of Clean the World™ Foundation. Through participation and training, the Sea Meadow Inn has proudly become one of the members of the Hospitality Recycling Program. Collecting slightly used soap bars and shampoo containers after our guests depart, these products are shipped to Orlando, FL for recycling. With seven bedrooms, a significant amount of slightly used soap bars and partially used shampoo bottles are generated on a daily basis. Joining Clean the World, the Sea Meadow Inn is proud to be part of an organization which has distributed more than 400 tons of recycled products to over 40 countries with a significant impact to improving the health of the recipients.

David and the staff at Sea Meadow Inn look forward to welcoming Cape Cod Sea Camp families and alumni year-round. Please mention your affiliation with CCSC and we’d be pleased to offer you an incentive to stay with us when you are in Brewster.

The PMC is a fundraiser recognized as the largest single participatory fundraiser in the world. The 30 person CCSC/PMC team reached a milestone this ride. The team went over the one million mark for total funds raised during their 18 year involvement. The mantra of the team is simple: “We still have work to do, and everything we do is for all of the right reasons”. Team members are inspired and motivated by the 7 Captains we are committed to ride for. They are local young adults and youngsters that are dealing with cancer, or have had to deal with cancer in the past. Schuyler, Logan, Isabella, Brent, Bennett, Kevin and Jack are the ones that keep all of us motivated. We love and respect them.
