For over four decades we have been thrilled by the Angel of the Annunciation, all glowing wings and with lily in hand. The long journey of Advent includes a bumpy ride to Bethlehem and a scared young girl giving birth. Magically and mysteriously, we find ourselves at the manger. Surrounded by donkeys, oxen and bleating sheep, there they are: Mary, Joseph and the incredible baby radiating light and mystery at the same time. As angels’ voices are heard, shepherds and kings, high-born and low-life, begin to gather. Some bring gifts, others just show up. The place seems wreathed in frankincense, myrrh and maybe even rosemary. And our music reflects all that. Gregorian chant in candlelight, exquisite Renaissance motets, carols soft and sweet, loud and long, raucous and reverent, this is “A Chanticleer Christmas”. William Fred Scott Music Director, 2015–2020 5 our Chanticleer, la période de Noël a toujours été synonyme de chant, Pde multiples voyages excitants, de retrouvailles avec de vieux amis, et de réflexion sur la meilleure manière de présenter l’intemporelle histoire de la Nativité à d’innombrables auditeurs. Depuis plus de quarante ans, nous nous émerveillons devant l’ange de l’Annonciation aux ailes éclatantes et portant lys à la main. Le long parcours de l’Avent comprend un voyage cahoteux à Bethléem et l’enfantement d’une jeune fille apeurée. Par une magie mystérieuse, nous nous trouvons dans la crèche. Les voici, entourés d’ânes, de bœufs et de moutons bêlant : Marie, Joseph et l’incroyable bébé qui rayonne de lumière mais aussi de mystère. Tandis que résonnent les voix des anges, bergers et rois, grands et petit peuple accourent. Certains apportent des cadeaux, d’autres viennent voir simplement. L’endroit semble baigné d’encens, de myrrhe et peut-être même de romarin. Et notre musique reflète tout cela. Chant grégorien à la lumière des bougies, superbes motets de la Renaissance, noëls doux et charmants, puissants et brillants, intenses et fervents, tel est le Chanticleer Christmas. Seit über vier Jahrzehnten fasziniert uns der Verkündigungsengel mit seinen strahlenden Flügeln und der Lilie in der Hand. Die lange Reise vor Christi Geburt führt auf steinigen Wegen nach Bethlehem, wo ein verängstigtes junges Mädchen unter magischen und mysteriösen Umständen in einer Krippe ein Kind zur Welt bringt. Dort sind sie nun beisammen, umringt von Eseln, Ochsen und blökenden Schafen: Maria, Josef und das erstaunliche Kind, gehüllt in einen strahlenden, wundersamen Schein. Als Engelsstimmen erklingen, versammeln sich allmählich Schäfer und Könige, Hochwohl- geborene und Bettelarme. Einige bringen Geschenke, andere schauen nur so vorbei. Die ganze Stätte wirkt vernebelt von Weihrauch und Myrrhe, gar Rosmarin. Und all das möchten wir in unserer Musik zum Ausdruck bringen. Gregorianische Gesänge bei Kerzenschein, herrliche Motetten aus der Renaissance, ruhige und besinnliche, schallende und opulente, derbe und ehrfürchtige Weihnachtslieder – das ist „A Chanticleer Christmas“. Louis CA. Botto, a young Texan singer and musicologist, gathered friends from the Grace Cathedral and San Francisco Symphony Choruses at a dining room table to eat and sing the Renaissance music he loved. In a few months they dared to put on a concert in the Old Mission Dolores, which led to invitations to perform outside the Bay Area. Chanticleer’s first Christmas appearance was at Grace Cathedral in December of that year at a concert memorializing the slain Mayor and Supervisor, George Moscone and Harvey Milk. The repertoire expanded to include all centuries and genres, and the development of a schedule of a hundred performances a year around the United States and in Europe necessitated full-time employment for the ensemble in 1991. Chanticleer’s most popular offering has always been “A Chanticleer Christmas”, performed as many times as the season permits in the Bay Area’s cathedrals, churches, and missions, New York’s St. Ignatius Loyola, Chicago’s First Presbyterian, Los Angeles’ Walt Disney Concert Hall, and George Mason University. Chanticleer’s Christmas recordings have been its most popular. A legendary 25-year series of Christmas performances at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art was recorded for public television, and broadcasts on Minnesota Public Radio (now American Public Media) became an annual tradition, reaching over 300 public radio stations in the US every December. Over its 42 years, Chanticleer has performed in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, Europe, Asia, Australia, and South America, released a discography of over 50 titles, commissioned over 70 new works, and created an award-winning education program. Over 130 men have sung in the ensemble. As a non-profit corporation, Chanticleer is governed by a volunteer Board of Trustees, and supported by charitable contributions from individuals, corporations, foundations and government, the latter including the National Endowment for the Arts and San Francisco’s Hotel Tax Fund – Grants for the Arts.
