Tipp City Exempted Village Schools Volume 4, Issue 18 Quick News January 7, 2019 Superintendent’s Thoughts Dr. Gretta Kumpf The safety of our students and staff is a top priority for Tipp City Schools. Most recently, all certified and classified employees completed ALICE Active Shooter Civilian Response Training in partnership with the Tipp City Police Department. This includes administrators, teachers, aides, custodians, cafeteria workers, secretaries, and support staff. ALICE is an acronym for Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate that describes options people can use to most effectively respond to an aggressive intruder or active shooter situation. The training encourages staff to respond to an emergency based on their situation with the knowledge they have available. The district and police department also hosted a community event for local residents to learn about ALICE and how it can be applied in their personal lives. Thank you to Sargent Chris Graham for his support in our effort to bring this training to our district and to our trainers: Officer Corey Rismiller; Mike Vagedes, LT Ball Intermediate principal; Clay Lavercombe, Tippecanoe Middle School assistant principal; Nick Petro, Broadway Elementary physical education teacher. The next level of staff training will take place in February. WE are TIPP! Two Tipp Schools Recognized by State Board of Education Congratulations to Nevin Coppock Elementary School and LT Ball Intermediate School for earning an overall grade of “A” on the 2017-2018 Ohio School Report Card. As an Overall A Award winner, each school’s report card shows the school is demonstrating high academic performance and building bright futures for students of every background and ability level. “Every day, Ohio’s schools do the challenging but rewarding work of educating our students and building the future of our state,” said State Board of Education President Tess Elshoff. “The State Board of Education is proud to recognize these students, teachers, administrators and parents for their accomplishments.” Ohio’s strategic plan for education, Each Child, Our Future, is the state’s plan to ensure each student is challenged, prepared and empowered for his or her future by way of an excellent prekindergarten through grade 12 education. Thank you to all of those who contributed to this accomplishment. Thank you to the Tipp City Foundation for awarding grants to Tipp City Schools. The funds support educational experiences for students that foster the district’s tradition of excellence. Since its founding in 1943, the Tipp City Foundation has awarded more than $2.2 million. Virtual Reality — $1,240.52 immerses 3rd - 5th grade students in the technical world with the purchase of virtual reality kits. Teacher-led, the class follows lectures while wearing futuristic headgear. Breakout Rooms — $800 breaks beyond traditional teaching methods in the Design Thinking Class with “breakout rooms”. These 7th and 8th grade students will work in teams to investigate open-ended problem solving as well as create challenges for other students to explore. Lego Stations — $650 stacks the future of STEM learning in favor of Broadway Elementary students through the purchase of a LEGO station for the library. Fiber Arts — $304.03 strengthens fine motor muscles of 2nd and 3rd grade students by underwriting the costs of a new fiber arts curriculum. Weaving, sewing and felting are examples of the new skills these 400 students will learn. Scientific Discovery — $289.10 purchases owl pellets for 2nd grade dissectors. “Indigestible parts from prey (such as teeth, skulls, claws, and feathers) are too dangerous to pass through the digestive tract.
