Tipp City Exempted Village Schools Volume 2, Issue 37 Quick News May 8, 2017 Superintendent’s Thoughts Dr. Gretta Kumpf Thank you! Thank you! Thank you for supporting the Tipp City Schools’ levy renewal on May 2nd. It is incredibly gratifying to know that our community values a strong education and recognizes the importance of quality programs in our classrooms. The strong success of this levy is also a testament to the many volunteers who spent hours working on a compelling campaign. They wrote letters to the editors, hosted neighborhood coffees, and spoke to community groups. They worked tirelessly to ensure voters understood the purpose of the levy and its significance to the district’s budget. They remained steadfast and firmly believed in friends, neighbors and the community. While many, many people contributed to this effort, I want to extend a special thank you to our levy campaign leaders, Joellen and Jim Heatherly, who accepted this enormous task. They kept us organized, on target, and committed to our purpose. Their leadership was instrumental in bringing our community together to say “yes” on Issue 4 for Tipp City Schools. Be the Bridge Introducing “New” Principals Some outstanding readers went from elementary student to “Principal for a Day.” The students secured their new role after earning more than one hundred points in the Accelerated Reading program, a computerized program that tests reading comprehension. Students select books on their reading level, read independently, and take a comprehension test on the computer. Each book is worth a certain number of points based on its length and reading level. Pictured with the fulltime principal, Tina Smith, are Nathan Kollmeyer, Owen Baileys, Tessa Riehle, and Ella Combs. The students achieved these points by January 1st! Great job. Poetry, Moms, and Love Tippecanoe Middle School sixth graders culminated their language arts unit on poetry with a special Mother’s Tea. They welcomed their moms and other guests for amazing poetry readings. Students shared a favorite poem they authored and is featured in their poetry books. Their writings are creative, joyful, and inspiring. A few moms got a little choked up reading some of the beautiful entries. The TMS students and their guests then enjoyed lunch, hugs, and laughs. Page 2 Quick News Tippecanoe Middle School students participated in Celebrating National Poetry Month National Poetry Month during April. They submitted poetry for Media Specialist Wendy Torrence to read over the public address system every morning. Some of the poems were favorites by published authors; others were written by TMS students. In the Library Media Center, students made blackout poems and magnetic poetry kits. Others wrote and then actually typed their poems on a typewriter. (When entering the library, students asked, “What’s that sound?”). Others created poems using magnetic poetry kits on the dry erase board that students read throughout the day. P O E T R Y Broadway Elementary students celebrated their poetic talents with Poetry Picnics. The 2nd graders invited their Picnic parents and other loved ones to hear their writings. After some wonderful poetry readings, students enjoyed an afternoon picnic. Congratulations to Broadway Elementary students and staff who were featured as a record-breaking school by the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society at the organization’s year-end celebration last week. The school participated in the Pennies for Patients fundraising campaign and raised $6,001.59. The collection was mostly loose change donated during a three week period. The top classroom received lunch from Olive Garden; the second highest earning classroom had a pizza party from Dominos. Third grade teacher April Taylor organized this successful service project and said, “This is my 17th year volunteering for them and this is the first time our school has reached this level so we are very proud and honored we were able to make a difference!” The money benefits blood cancer research. The Value of Pull Tabs Keep saving the pull tabs from soda cans and other products to help the Dayton Ronald McDonald House Tab-A-PULL-ooza pull tab contest. This friendly contest is a great way to show children the benefits of recycling and helping others when people “pull” together. Pull tabs are taken to the First Street Recycling Center to be recycled for their salvage value. Revenue generated from the pull tabs benefits the local Ronald McDonald House, a home away from home for families of children being treated at Dayton Children’s Hospital. The LT Ball Intermediate School kitchen staff continues to collect pull tabs but kitchen manager Tammy Green says donations are behind last year’s totals. She will be taking the pull tabs to the Tab-A-PULL-ooza celebration on May 20th and will accept donations until May 19th. Showing Improvement LT Ball Intermediate hosted a pizza party reward for the most improved student in each pod. Teachers in each pod selected a student who showed the most growth for the month of February in a specific subject. The pizza was generously donated by the Tipp City Optimist Club.
