Temperature tolerance and trophic dynamics were studied for three species (L. angustifrons, L. microlepis and L. mariae). Subsequently, several individuals of these three species were shipped to Heart of the Hills Research Station (HOHRS) in Ingram, Texas in 1975 (Rutledge and Lyons 1976 [cited by Schofield (2011) but not accessed for this report]). Also in 1975, Nile perch (L. niloticus) were transferred from Lake Turkana, Kenya, to HOHRS. Namulemo (Collaborator) 9. Ms. M. Nsega (SLT) June, 2015 1 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Source of the Nile Fish farm (SON) is located at Bugungu area in Napoleon Gulf, northern Lake Victoria. The proprietors of the farm have a collaborative arrangement with NaFIRRI to undertake quarterly environment monitoring of the cage site as is mandatory under the NEMA conditions. The monitoring surveys cover selected physical-chemical factors i.e. water column depth, water transparency, water column temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH and conductivity; nutrient status, algal and invertebrate communities (micro-invertebrates/zooplankton and macro- invertebrates/macro-benthos) as well as fish community. The second quarter survey for the calendar year 2015, which is the subject of this report, was undertaken in June 2015. -

O. Box 445, Ethiopia. 2Department of Zoological Sciences, Addis Ababa University, P. O. Box 1176, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Received 17 December, 2018: Accepted 7 January, 2019 A 96 h static toxicity bioassay was carried out to examine fish responses and to determine the median lethal concentration (LC50) of Balanites aegyptiaca stem bark extract on adults of Brycinus nurse, Labeobarbus bynni and Labeobarbus intermedius. Experimental fish were exposed to piscicide plant extract of 0.0 (control), 15.0, 17.5, 20.0, 22.5, and 25.0 mgL-1. Fish exposed to these extracts except the control showed symptoms of toxicity including darting, agitated swimming, air gulping, loss of sensitivity and knockdown before death. These responses were much frequent and faster in L. bynni -1 and L. intermedius. The 96 h LC50 values for the different test fishes were 18.99, 20.72 and 20.72 mg L for L. bynni, L. intermedius and B. nurse, respectively. Based on the present investigation, we can conclude that the application of B. aegyptiaca extract causes lethal toxic effects on different fishes even at low concentrations and hence, indiscriminate use of the plant for fishing should be discouraged and regulated in order to protect fish biodiversity lose in the Alitash National Park area. -

In Lake Victoria drainage basin in Kenya, ten endemic species of ‘Barbus’ are reported, which play a significant role in food security and socio-economic development of the local community. Although these species are identified using morphological characters, confusion may occur when trying to distinguish morphologically similar species. Recent molecular work in the region has suggested presence of introgression within certain ‘Barbus’ species further complicating the taxonomy and species identification in the group. In this study, we obtained cytochrome b and GH-intron 2 gene sequences of nine ‘Barbus’ species sampled in the Lake Victoria drainage basin in Kenya. We conducted Maximum likelihood and Bayesian phylogenetic analyses to establish their evolutionary relationships in relation to other ‘Barbus’. The results showed distinct lineages of ‘Barbus’ species not subjected to introgression/hybridization. Herein, we present new sequences of cytochrome b and GH DNA for small African ‘Barbus’. -

During the various exercises it appeared that it was rather difficult and complicated to harmonise and standardise data forms, as the three riparian countries had their data collection already in place. The three Fisheries Departments and Fisheries Research Institutes, however, showed their good will and after ample discussion it was found that the data forms were not comprehensive and that at fish species level there were discrepancies. The existing forms did not allow space for certain important commercial species. From in-depth interviews during training courses it became apparent that certain species were neglected as no space on the forms was reserved for them. The harmonised form, which was the result of the standardisation exercise has not (yet) been introduced, although all important fish species would fit on the form. -

Box: 1145, Ethiopia Abstract: This review paper highlights fish diversity in major river basins of Ethiopia. Ethiopian fresh water systems classified into seven drainage basins. These are the Abay, Awash, Baro Akobo, Omo-Gibe, Rift Lakes, Tekeze and Wabishebele-Genale basins. The country has large fish species diversity in its lakes, rivers and reservoirs. Generally more than 200 fish species found in Ethiopia. The fresh water fish fauna of Ethiopia contains a mixture of Nilo Sudanic, East African and Endemic forms. The Nilo-Sudanic forms are the dominant forms in terms of diversity and represented by a large number of species found in the Baro-Akobo, Omo-Gibe, Tekeze and Abay drainage basin. The highland East African forms are found in the northern Rift valley lakes, highland lakes and associated river systems. The Number of fish species record from the seven drainage basins of Ethiopian has Baro (87), Abay (36), Rift Valley Lakes (32), Wabe-Shebla (26), Omo (26), Awash (15) and Tekeze (10). Howe ever endemicity is highest in Abay, Rift valley and Awash basins. Number of endemic fish species found in drainage basins of Ethiopia records in Abay (23), Rift valley lakes (7), Awash (6), Omo (2) and Baro (1) so far. The current social and economic conditions in Ethiopia, that is high population growth rates and sparse job opportunities coupled with the absence of an effective fisheries management, tend to lead rapidly to decline fish diversity. -
