Mill Valley Oral History Program A collaboration between the Mill Valley Historical Society and the Mill Valley Public Library Jacquie Phelan An Oral History Interview Conducted by Debra Schwartz in 2019 © 2019 by the Mill Valley Public Library TITLE: Oral History of Jacquie Phelan INTERVIEWER: Debra Schwartz DESCRIPTION: Transcript, 40 pages INTERVIEW DATE: March 29, 2019 In this oral history, road racer and mountain bike pioneer Jacquie Phelan recounts her life on two wheels. Born in San Francisco in 1955, Jacquie grew up in Rhode Island, Kansas, and finally Los Angeles, where she first developed her love of bicycles and her loathing of cars. Jacquie attended college at Middlebury in Vermont, and then moved to the Bay Area in the late 1970s, settling in San Francisco. She recounts her introduction to the Marin County cycling community on the occasion of the Appetite Seminar ride in in 1980, and reminisces about the many races she won over the years, as well as a few of her legendary provocations. She exposes the sexism and misogyny of bike culture, which prompted her to found the Women’s Mountain Bike & Tea Society (WOMBATS). Finally, Jacquie discusses her more than 35-year-long relationship with her husband Charlie Cunningham, and her care of him since a tragic accident left him with a life- changing brain injury. © All materials copyright Mill Valley Public Library. Lance has unmatched credibility among cyclists that is enhanced every July. His prominent support of the League and IMBA helps both of our organizations grow and do more for bicycling. Of course Lance isn't the only asset we have. To boost mountain biking and improve trail access, we need to connect effectively with the variety of societal trends and statistics that affirm the value of our sport. By now, most Americans have probably heard about U.S. President Bush's new effort to promote physical fitness and active lifestyles. The president has increased his training reg- imen and is encouraging all Americans to join him. The role of mountain biking in promoting fitness and countering obesity, particularly in children, can't be overestimated. It is one of the powerful societal benefits of our sport. When we describe our programs and our organizations, we need to emphasize this. (And let's not overlook the physical benefits of trailwork, either.) The power of mountain biking in enhancing tourism is important, too.

Maeda made freewheels and sprockets for bicycles and agricultural machinery. Maeda was owned by the Maeda and Kawai families. A few months later, Maeda moved to Sakai. The original sprockets and freewheels were called 8.8.8. It was a good time to start a bicycle component business. WW-I ended bicycle imports into Japan. Osaka was a center of Japan‘s small arms production. After WW-I, many of the Japan‘s newly established small arms factories started producing bicycles. Similar swords-to-plow- shares transitions took place in Saint Etienne, France and Birmingham, England. In 1931, Mr. Taizo Kumagai married Shikanosuke Maeda‘s daughter and changed his name to Taizo Maeda. During WW-II, Maeda Iron Works merged with eleven other small factories. The new company was called Toa Seiki Kosakusho. Taizo Maeda was elected President. The merged company was taken over by the Japan‘s military government in 1943.
