Annual Report of vi Projects, Research, Publications & Academic Outreach 2016-17 Preface

Idea of a University

Universities as institutions of higher learning have been an important aspect of people’s social lives. Tracing the origins of institutions will inform of its connections with society, community of scholars and a sense of whole or aggregate, possibly referring to its purpose of being. The evolution of have witnessed different trajectories in various parts of the world; however, what has been constant in the Heraclitian fl ux, is the constant endeavour of universities to provide democratic spaces for learners to seek, understand and question without fear, issues of larger social concern and help in creating knowledge that leads to individual growth and social progress. The university has multiple responsibilities. It has to help individuals evolve and societies develop and progress. It has to ensure that the oppressed gets access to higher centres of learning. Transforming the society through these responsibilities is a decisive motivation for universities to endure the struggles of the past, to prepare ignited minds to face the tumultuous future with faith, conviction, dignity and integrity.

Research and teaching are co-creators of the foundation of the university. Research helps build the infrastructure on which new knowledge is created. Teaching and pedagogy based on research helps the students understand issues, not as canonical texts, but as a lived experience, based on observation and systematic investigation. The mind, in such an atmosphere, learns to perceive, think and offer solutions that are relevant, effective and empowering.

Christ University has marked a niche in the Indian higher education context with its multidisciplinary focus at Bachelor, Master and Doctoral level. With its commitment to teaching-research-service, it has marched forth to promote a milieu of learning and knowledge that is based on its core principles of faith-based learning and the Humboldtian and Newmanian traditions of individual and social transformation.

The Annual Report of Projects, Research, Publications and Academic Outreach 2016-17 documents the academic contributions of the University. The report contains details of publications by the six University journals through the Centre for Publications and information about publications by the Kannada Sangha, details of minor and major research projects, working papers, and monographs funded by the University and external organisations, faculty publications in journals, books, and periodicals. It also includes information on academic outreach, that is, details of participation and organisation of various academic programs such as conferences, seminars, workshops and symposia and details of MPhil and PhD theses approved by the University.

The report has a dual purpose: to share the contributions of the University during the academic year 2016-17 in research and academic outreach and to offer a foundation on which the prospects for the future year can be drawn.

I would like to acknowledge the support and contributions of the Management, the Directors, and the Deans, the HODs, the Coordinators and the faculty members and all the dedicated staff who have been working tirelessly to build this University into a unique institution of value.

Annual Report of viii Projects, Research, Publications & Academic Outreach 2016-17 The Vision of Research, Publications and Academic Outreach of Christ University

In conversation with the Registrar, Christ University: Dr Anil Joseph Pinto

Interviewed by Dr Rolla Das

What, according to you, are the roles and contributions of a university?

In the Western academia, there have been two prominent ideations of the purpose of Universities. John Henry Newman, in 1852 argued that the role of institutions should primarily be of knowledge keepers, as institutes that nurture human beings, a sense of creating a human university. Humboldt, however had a signifi cantly different perspective. He focused primarily on the notions of the social transformative capacities of a university through knowledge dissemination. I would think, the university should be a culmination of both.

Today, the academic world is more inclined towards the creation of knowledge through research. What is the value of research to the universities? Where would you fi t this in the context of Indian universities?

We could say that the higher education institutes in the Indian context did not quite operate as Humboldtian universities. Humboldt would have argued for research driven universities for knowledge creation and dissemination thereby helping in social evolution and mobility. Predominantly, NGO’s and few government institutes have engaged in policy interventions. Our universities have not been the frontrunners of policy research. Universities, I would emphasise, need to strike the balance between research on policy interventions and promotion of scientifi c development.

In what ways does research contribute to teaching and pedagogy in a university?

Research and pedagogy in universities are quite inextricably linked. It allows one to go beyond the text and take independent positions. Preoccupation with textbooks alone can be detrimental to the growth of the university and its learners. This necessitates research, which allows one to understand shifts in economic, social and cultural realms. The unfolding of the demanding future reveals that we do not have adequate resources. Research linked pedagogy prepares one for the future. The emerging shifts are towards the development of analytical skills and critical minds. Therefore, the pedagogy should ideally not be restricted to lower levels but higher orders of thinking and aptitude to prepare the learners for the future. This necessitates a shift towards research linked teaching and pedagogy.

What is Christ University’s vision and approach towards research?

Every University has a vision and policy that is tied to its historical growth and development. Christ University aspires to form individuals and contribute to policy, service and research. Unfortunately, the state policies of higher education are primarily preoccupied with branding, without paying attention to resolving issues through policy interventions. Additionally, I do think that the prerogative of providing such interventions, emerging as think tanks should extend beyond the exclusive purview of research institutes.

In Christ University, we aim to provide a cultivation of research environment through mutual support and encouragement. We extend our research endeavours to Postgraduate and Undergraduate programmes. We have included in our curriculum a requirement of mandatory publications for our

Annual Report of Projects, Research, Publications ix & Academic Outreach 2016-17 Annual Report of Projects, Research, Publications and Academic Outreach 2016-17

Master’s Programme. We are also actively encouraging setting up of research laboratories. Collaborative research is being promoted at all levels, both horizontally and vertically; faculties, researchers and students are coming together with innovative, interdisciplinary research.

What are the factors that motivate research collaboration with Indian and foreign universities? How do such collaborations contribute to the growth and development of the students in Christ University?

Facilitators, interdisciplinary thematic inquiry, building on mutually supportive research environment are few motivations for research collaborations. In the social sciences, explorations of culturally signifi cant transitions are key motivations. Our researchers have been part of laboratories of noble laureates, have represented the university in NASA and other institutions. It’s a long way to go. But we have embarked on this journey with integrity and dedication.

Research and continuing scholarship are the backbone of a university. Traditionally, universities have been centres for research. Though governments have a network of science and technology laboratories for research and development, the major base of researchers still remains with the universities.

Christ University, Bengaluru, under its responsive role and to promote advanced academic research in diverse disciplines, has established Centre for Research-Projects. Centre for Research-Projects is committed to engage critically with issues of intellectual and social relevance. Towards achieving excellence in research that is globally and locally relevant, the Centre offers its support to research projects and consultancy assignments to collaborate with institutions/departments/organisations of national and international repute, provide policy recommendations relevant for local, national and international concerns, provide solutions for various issues of the economy, industry, government departments and so forth.

Major Research Projects (MRP) conceived by the Centre and executed by Christ University faculty members in Humanities, Social Science, Theoretical and Applied Science disciplines, Commerce, Management, Education, Law and Engineering not only add signifi cant value to the research environment of the University and contribute to the social transformation but are also important in the ever changing global scenario. Monograph, which is an in-depth study on a specifi c subject, concept, model or a project, is an outcome of fundamental research. It is released in the form of a doctrine, treatise or a report and published by the Centre and provides an in-depth insight as a reference for use of application. The Working Paper released by the Centre gives an opportunity for scholars, executives and researchers, an opportunity to deliberate further on it for further enhancement and creation of spill over research papers as an outcome.

After inception, the Centre has approved 88 MRPs, 37 monographs, and 72 working papers. 18 MRPs, 7 Monographs and 4 Working papers have been published in this academic year. Total fund of INR 23,72,5600 was sanctioned for this year amongst which INR 22,90,0600 has been sanctioned for MRP, INR 4, 25,000 for Monograph and INR 4, 00,000 for Working Paper. Details are reported in the following pages.

Christ University Policies: Code of Ethics, Post Doctoral and Emeritus

Code of Ethics for Research and Publication

Christ University code of research and publications ethics applies to all areas of research including student projects and dissertations, doctoral research, research projects (Major research projects, minor research projects under RDC scheme, monographs, working papers) by all members of the University. (staff and students).

The code of research and publications ethics applies to all Employees of Christ University, students, and visiting and emeritus researchers.

1. Research conduct and research ethics

The code applies to all research deliverables and output in whatever form irrespective of how it is funded.

This document will use the term “University” to encompass Departments, Centres, Institutes and offi ces. This document will outline central issues related to research conduct and ethics. Departments are encouraged to evolve discipline specifi c research conduct and ethics guidelines.

1.1 Research conduct requirements

Everyone involved in research in the University owes a duty of accountability to society, to their profession, to the University, to all participants in the research and to its funders. Staff must accept full responsibility for their own conduct of their research and the activities of all staff, students and others under their direction or supervision.

Researchers must be honest and lawful in respect of their own actions in research and in their responses to the actions of other researchers. This applies to the whole range of research work, outputs and deliverables, including applying for funding, experimental design, generating and analysing data, publishing results, and acknowledging the direct and indirect contribution of colleagues, collaborators and others. Plagiarism, deception or the fabrication or falsifi cation of results shall be regarded as research misconduct and a serious disciplinary offence. Researchers should declare and manage any real or potential confl icts of interest.

The training needs of researchers at all career stages should be considered to ensure that research project management skills refl ect best practice in the sector, and discussion of these should be included within the Personal Development and Personal Review process for academic staff or training plans for students.

Principal Investigators, Departmental heads, Research Supervisors must take responsibility for the following: 1. The ethical basis and design of their research projects. Researchers must ensure that research projects are ethically sound and have received the approval of the relevant ethics committee(s) and all relevant statutory regulatory authorities before they commence;

Annual Report of 90 Projects, Research, Publications & Academic Outreach 2016-17 Christ University Policies: Ethics, Post Doctoral and Emeritus

2. The safety of all involved in the research process, ensuring that the research is carried out in accordance with health and safety policies and legislative requirements; 3. Ensuring that research is conducted in a suitable working environment with appropriate equipment and facilities; 4. The integrity of the fi nancial management of all research projects, and for seeking to provide the optimum value for the public or private funders who have invested in them including effective project management to agreed project plans and appropriate quality standards, as well as the timely delivery of any scheduled tangible outcomes; 5. Management of research data in accordance with standard practices and expectations of the particular discipline and in accordance with any prvacy law stated by the law; 6. Undertaking of professional development appropriate to the research; 7. Ensuring that all personal records of research progress, including authorised laboratory books, are maintained to the recommended or required standards, and that the falsifi cation of results does not occur. Laboratory books must be signed and dated by the researcher, and signed off by the supervisor; 8. Ensuring confi dentiality in order to achieve protection of intellectual property rights where appropriate; 9. Ensuring that research fi ndings are suitably disseminated; 10. Except in the case of covert research that has been appropriately approved, ensuring that research subjects participate in a voluntary way, free from any coercion; 11. Avoiding harm to participants and minimising any adverse effect that the research may have on people, animals and the natural environment and property.

Conduct with respect to Research Data

Distinction shall be drawn between personal and research data. Personal data is any data by which possession of could identify an individual. Research data are the metrics collected as part of the research and solely by which an individual cannot be identifi ed. Personal data may also be research data.

Some central issues that pertain to data are: All staff and students using personal data in research have a duty of confi dence to the individuals concerned; 1. Unless there are ethically and legally justifi ed reasons for doing otherwise, researchers must ensure that they have each study participant’s explicit informed written consent to obtain, hold and use their personal information; 2. Only personal information pertinent to the research should be collected; 3. Data security arrangements must be suffi cient to prevent unauthorised breaches of confi dentiality; 4. Personal data should not be kept for longer than is necessary.

Research data 1. Data must be recorded in a durable form with appropriate references; 2. Data must be retained intact for a period of at least seven years from the date of any publication which is based upon them. Data should be stored in their original form – i.e. tapes/discs etc should not be deleted and reused, but kept securely as outlined;

Annual Report of Projects, Research, Publications 91 & Academic Outreach 2016-17 Annual Report of Projects, Research, Publications and Academic Outreach 2016-17

3. Departments and Centres must have procedures for the retention of data. These procedures must be made known to all of their staff and students, who must comply with them. 4. Confi dentiality provisions relating to publications may apply in circumstances where the University or the researcher has made or given confi dentiality undertakings to third parties or confi dentiality is required to protect intellectual property rights. It is the obligation of the research leader to inform researchers as to whether confi dentiality provisions apply and of researchers to enquire of their research leader whether there are any obligations with respect to these provisions;

Sensitive data

The use of ‘sensitive data’ needs to be discussed with research participants and full consent obtained.

Confi dentiality

Individual participant personal information obtained as a result of research is to be considered confi dential and disclosure to third parties is prohibited with the exception of statutory notifi cation as applicable to the particular research. Participant confi dentiality should be ensured by utilising identifi cation code numbers to correspond to research data in any research paperwork and computer fi les.

Data Sharing

General data sharing guidelines as indicated by Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) is encouraged by researchers (OECD, www.oecd.org). The principle that research outcomes must be socially useful is strongly linked to core value of social responsibility of the University.

Open access

The University encourages its researchers to make all research papers (including journal articles, conference proceedings, book chapters and similar material), where copyright allows, should be made available in an open access form upon publication and deposited in the University repository.

Where available, researchers should take advantage of opportunities to publish their work in an open access form offered by journal publishers, and can make use of research grants and other funds, in order to pay open access publication fees.

Publications

For the purposes of the Code, publications include reports and technical reports in printed and electronic form, where these are related to a programme of research (including internally and externally funded research), even where these have a limited circulation and have been prepared to report on progress of the research. Researchers are encouraged to disseminate their research and research fi ndings in an appropriate form, usually as papers in refereed journals. Publication and wider dissemination of research and research fi ndings must be carried out responsibly and with an awareness of the

Annual Report of 92 Projects, Research, Publications & Academic Outreach 2016-17 Christ University Policies: Ethics, Post Doctoral and Emeritus consequences of dissemination in the wider media. 1. A publication must contain appropriate reference to the contributions made by all participants in the relevant research; 2. The research funder should be notifi ed in advance when research might be published, publicised or disseminated; 3. Any person who has not participated in a substantial way in conceiving, executing or interpreting at least part of the relevant research is not to be included as an author of a publication derived from that research; 4. In addition to meeting the requirements of the points above, an author must ensure that the work of research students, research assistants, research offi cers, and technical offi cers is recognised in all publications derived from research to which they have made a contribution; 5. A publication which is substantially similar to other publications derived from the same research must contain appropriate reference to the other publications; 6. A researcher who submits substantially similar work to more than one other publisher should disclose that fact to the publishers at the time of submission; 7. Publication and dissemination of work electronically or on the Web should be treated with the same degree of integrity as every other form of publication; 8. Individuals who are or have been the participant of the research should not be identifi ed or identifi able in any publication. Measures should be taken to disguise the identity of research subjects unless explicit consent is given by them for revealing their identity. 9. In addition to publications, all external communications, whether through websites, e-bulletins, press releases, media briefi ngs, or events should be undertaken with the core principles of openness, transparency and accountability.

Intellectual property

Intellectual Property generated by University employees belongs to the University if it was made in the course of normal duties or during circumstances where an invention might reasonably be expected to take place.

For work done by a student, research assistant or post-doctoral fellow, the following guidelines related to the interpretation of copyright and other aspects of intellectual property rights is to be followed. These guidelines distinguish, in general, between items done solely by the student and those undertaken as part of a joint research effort. In the former case, the intellectual property is primarily the student’s, but the University reserves certain rights as detailed below. In the latter case, the intellectual property rights involve the student, the research supervisor (and possibly other individuals as well), the University, and on occasion the fi nancial sponsor of the research. If the work is anticipated to have commercial possibilities, it is required that the parties involved agree in writing beforehand on the sharing of any fi nancial returns.

At Christ university, given our mission and types of undergraduate, postgraduate programs and doctoral programs (including MPhil) the most likely types of intellectual property to be created includes theses, dissertations, cognate essays, research papers, books, poems, plays, scripts, essays, articles, dictionaries, maps, lyrics, musical scores, paintings, photographs, fi lms, videos, tapes, computer software, databases, records, tapes, cassettes, educational materials, WEB based materials

Annual Report of Projects, Research, Publications 93 & Academic Outreach 2016-17 Annual Report of Projects, Research, Publications and Academic Outreach 2016-17 and inventions (new kinds of technology). To be protected by law, an item must satisfy three criteria: a) it must be an original creation; b) it must be a specifi c expression of an idea, not the idea itself; and c) the item must be fi xed in a physical form. These creations may occur via term papers, theses or dissertations, research or cognate essays, course projects, cases, studio or laboratory assignments, etc. Ownership rests initially with the creator of the work, unless the creator has been employed to create a work, (e.g. research assistant or post doctoral fellow) in which case the copyright rests with the employer. It should be stressed, as well, that once a piece of work has been accepted for publication by a journal or a publisher, in the absence of an agreement to the contrary, it is the publisher who owns the work. Finally, work created by an individual while a student, remains his or her property for life.

Research Ethics

Christ University Ethics Committee

The University has a central ethics committee (Christ University Ethics Committee) that is responsible for reviewing all research proposed and conducted by Departments and Centres.

The purpose of Ethical review by the University is threefold: 1. The University is committed to following good ethical practice, as a principle in itself and as a means by which the public can be assured of confi dence in the work of staff and students of the University. 2. The provisions for ethical review and approval assist researchers in the identifi cation of ethical issues and to address them in the structuring of research protocols. The resultant development of good practice is expected to cascade down to students and inform their own emerging practice at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. 3. The approval process acts as a safeguard to researchers, supervisors and students who can be confi dent of the ethical propriety of their project once it has been approved.

Ethical review (and approval) is required where the research involves the participation of human subjects /participants, their data and/or their tissue. Where the use of animals is involved this is also subject to regulation and the ethical review. Responsibility for ensuring proper ethical review lays with the Chief or Principal Investigators reporting on behalf of co-investigators through his/her Head of School, and involving the University Ethical Review Process for licensed work as appropriate. In addition to complying with the University’s internal policies on the governance of Research Ethics Committees, each department and centre must ensure that external systems are employed to review the ethical implications of research undertaken by its academic and research staff and students before any research commences. If there is any doubt about the need for ethical approval in relation to their proposed research, staff should seek advice from the centre for research.

The CUEC can delegate the review of research that poses minimal risk to human participants to research committees at departmental or deanery level. Guidelines as to what form of research poses risk to human participants can be obtained from the centre for research.
