GARCIA* *LYCEUM OF THE PHILIPPINES UNIVERSITY CAPITOL SITE, BATANGAS CITY, PHILIPPINES ______________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT Batangas province in the Philippines is proud of its cultural heritage, particularly the Batangas literature which reflects the unique characteristics of the Batanguenos, their life and culture. The cultural development of the people goes along with the development of Batangueno literature which places a tremendous emphasis especially in poetry songs, and folktales mostly drawn from real life. The writers have put themselves in the service of the society when they intend their works as agents of social change. Hence, this research seeks to identify from the people of different communities in Batangas the most common among the existing forms of Batangueno literature, and to find out what unique traits that contribute to the development of Batangas culture are transmitted to the younger Batanguenos. Findings revealed that the most common forms of Batangas folk literature are folksongs as town hymns, poetry in forms of luwa (religious songs) and proverbs, also folktales. Unique Batangueno traits such as nationalism, religiosity, ad positive attitude towards life stem from the town hymns and luwa. Proverbs capture the Batanguenos’ honor and faithfulness, love and respect for parents and elders, social relationships, sacrifice and love for others and economic security, endurance and industry. These unique Batangueno traits are used to check human flaws in society and improve their spiritual and social relations and work together to achieve developmental goals.

    FAACVSINCE 1972 FILIPINO AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF CENTRAL VA A 501(C)(3) NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION NEWSLETTER 2nd QUARTER 2018 BASEBALL AND THE BAYANIHAN SPIRIT Bayanihan is a Filipino tradition in which the community pulls together to help achieve a common goal. Baseball, America’s national past time, has been unifying the Filipino-American community in Central Virginia to exemplify the meaning of the word bayanihan. It is ironic since baseball is not that popular in the Philippines. It lags behind basketball, boxing and even soccer. But every summer, for the past seven years, the community becomes baseball fans as it rallies behind a team, the Pioneers, composed of kids 12-years-old and under, from Tanauan, Batangas in the Philippines. The Pioneers is managed by Totie Leus and competes with teams from the US Pioneers shuts out the Express 14-0. and all over the world in the East Coast. When the Pioneers played their tournaments in Central Virginia, an army of volunteers from the Fil-Am community opened up their homes and gave their time and provided lodging, meals, transportation to and from the games, donated baseball equipment and most importantly, offered fan support not only to the players and its coaches, but also to the parents and chaperones of the team. This past July, the Pioneers competed in the week-long Cal Team photo with the South Shore Seadogs from Boston. Ripken Blue Crab tournament in Aberdeen, MD. Even though the team did not have their games here, the bayanihan spirit crossed state lines. Gerry Balallo spear headed the effort to ensure the team received the same accommodations they had when they played their games in Central Virginia.

    Filipino American Youth and Culture by Ed Tiong General Information The Republic of the Philippines, located off the southeast coast of Asia, is one of the largest island groups in the world, numbering 7,107 islands. The 1995 population was approximately 60.5 million, with fifty-five percent of the people living on the largest island of Luzon. Approximately eighty-five percent of Filipinos are Catholic, with large numbers of Protestants and Muslims. Filipinos comprise approximately 111 cultural and linguistic groups, mainly of Malayo-Polynesian origin. The ethnic make-up of the population has been greatly influenced by Chinese, Spanish, and Caucasian American intermarriages. Among the eleven language groups of the country, Filipino is the official national language which is native to the peoples of Central Luzon. The Philippines is, nevertheless, the third largest English-speaking country in the world. During the sixteenth century, Spain conquered the islands which they named for King Phillip II as "Las Islas Filipinas" or the Philippine Islands. After 327 years of Spanish domination, the Filipinos revolted, and won their independence in 1898. However, after the Spanish-American War, the United States controlled the Philippines until 1942, when Japan seized control until they were liberated by the Americans. Finally, in 1946, the American Congress granted independence to the Filipinos, and the second Republic of the Philippines was born. Filipino Migration Historians identify four major waves of Filipino migration to the United States. The first wave between 1898 and 1941 was comprised mostly of "pensionados" or scholars sent by the American government to U.S. schools, and large numbers of laborers recruited to work on farms in Hawaii and California.

Lopez University of the Philippines Diliman ABSTRACT The paper reflects on the meanings of the Flores de Mayo ritual as performed in a town on the southeastern coast of Cebu through the examination of Mary as a “semantically open” symbol. The essay illustrates how ideas about Mary are constructed through the discourse of the Church and are in turn, reinforced through a Church-instituted and regulated ritual. An analysis of selected elements of the ritual however, reveals that the symbol of Mary has the potential to hold “other” kinds of meanings that slip in between “official” and “unofficial” discourses, highlighting how Mary continues to be a negotiated field between church authorities and the popular faithful. Keywords: Marian devotion, ritual, Cebu INTRODUCTION The enduring devotion to the Virgin Mary in Catholic parts of the Philippines since the beginning of Spanish colonization in the sixteenth century is partly attributed to the survival of pre-Christian belief systems despite the efforts of Spanish missionaries to stamp out all perceived “heathen” traces of the indigenous culture. The worship of beings believed to inhabit natural places like mountains, caves, and forests found new expression in Catholic imagery and ritual as noted by Mojares in his analysis of the discourses surrounding the miraculous Virgin of Guadalupe in Guadalupe, Cebu. Christian images in the Philippines were “inserted” into a culture with a tradition of sacred iconography. Precolonial Filipinos had religious images of wood, stone, and other materials, called likha (invention), larawan (image), or landing (shadow).

    Flores de Mayo Devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary Flores de Mayo is the Filipino variety of spring flower festivals celebrated in many Asian countries. In the Philippines, the festival is month-long Catholic celebration held in honor of the Virgin Mary. It is held in May, the beginning of the rainy season. After a long dry spell, flowers bloom overnight, the landscape bursts with tropical flowers, their fragrance filling the air. Catholic Filipinos celebrate the coming of the rains by giving praise to God and offering devotion to the Blessed Virgin. The celebration features nine days of praying the rosary in honor of the Virgin Mary, donations of flowers from parishioners’ gardens, participation from children and youth dressed in white (symbolizing the desire to imitate our Blessed Mother’s purity of heart), traditional hymns, and flower offerings to the Blessed Mother. The Filipino Ministry of the Holy Name of Jesus Parish invites you to Pray the Rosary in Community during a nine-day Novena from April 30 thru May 8th, 2021 All parishioners are encouraged to participate in the prayer and with flower offerings to honor our Blessed Mother during the month when we honor all mothers. On the final evening (May 8th), due to covid-19, we are unable to proceed with our traditional candle light procession around the Olive campus while praying the rosary. Instead, we will pray the rosary after the 4:30 p.m. mass, offer flowers and crown our Blessed Mother at the end of the rosary while being serenated with an “Ave Maria” song.
