Comptes Rendus Palevol 20 (8): 119-140. https://doi.org/10.5852/cr-palevol2021v20a8 ABSTRACT Invertebrate taphonomy can provide significant information about the post-mortem processes that affected the fossil record. In the East Pisco Basin of southern Peru, a Panopea Ménard de la Groye, 1807 shell bed was found in the upper Miocene strata of the Pisco Formation, hinting at a peculiar biostratinomic and diagenetic history. This bed contains abundant invertebrate fossil molds cemented by dolomite. The specimens of the deep infaunal bivalve,Panopea sp., occur together with bivalves representative of shallow infaunal species (Trachycardium sp. and Dosinia ponderosa [Gray, 1838]) and balanid barnacles, which are sessile encrusters. The Panopea specimens host compound molds evidencing an abundant encrusting fauna, including serpulids, ?foraminifera, bryozoans, and bar- nacles that colonized the inner surfaces of the valves before their final burial. We hypothesize that short-term, storm-related processes exhumed the living bivalves, resulting in a sedimentological concentration of relatively well-preserved shells. After the death of the exhumed bivalves, the inner KEY WORDS Biostratinomy, surfaces of the articulated Panopea shells, representing hard-substratal, sheltered environments on diagenesis, an otherwise unstable sandy seafloor (i.e., “benthic islands”), were colonized by different encrust- East Pisco Basin, ing organisms. RÉSUMÉ Taphonomie d’une couche de coquilles de Panopea Ménard de la Groye, 1807 de la Formation Pisco (Miocène, Pérou). La taphonomie des invertébrés peut fournir des informations importantes sur les processus post mortem qui ont affecté les registres fossiles. Dans la partie orientale du Bassin Pisco, dans le sud du Pérou, une couche riche en Panopea Ménard de la Groye, 1807 qui témoigne d’une histoire taphonomique et dia- génétique particulière a été trouvée dans les strates du Miocène supérieur de la Formation de Pisco. Cette couche est riche en moules d’invertébrés cimentés par la dolomite. Les spécimens de Panopea sp., un bivalve endofaunique, se trouvent en plus des représentants d’espèces de bivalves endofauniques (Trachy- cardium sp. et Dosinia ponderosa [Gray, 1838]) et des bernacles balanidés, qui sont des organismes sessiles encroûtants. Les spécimens de Panopea hébergent des moules composites, témoins d’une abondante faune encroûtante, comprenant des serpulidés, des ?foraminifères, des bryozoaires et des bernacles qui avaient colonisé les surfaces internes des valves avant l’enfouissement final. Nous supposons que des processus rapides de tempête ont exhumé les bivalves vivants et ont résulté en une concentration sédimentologique MOTS CLÉS de coquilles relativement bien conservées. The application of event stratigraphy in the Cenomanian to Lower Coniacian (Upper Cretaceous) Plänerkalk Gruppe of northwestern Germany has advanced stratigraphic resolution considerably. For a short interval in the Upper Turonian, various genetically variable events (bioevents, tephroevents, stable isotope marker, eustatoevents) are reviewed and new data are partly added. In addition, the lateral litho and biofacies changes within individual events are discussed and provide a basis for a tentative high-resolution correlation between distal and proximal settings. The dense sequence of events permits a stratigraphic resolution of 50 – 100ky for some intervals. Beyond stratigraphic purposes, the alternation of fossil barren intervals with thin fossil beds still demands explanations. As taphonomic processes are considered to be play only a minor role, other explanations are required. It appears that trophic aspects and a calibra- tion of planktic and benthic faunal assemblages may result in a better understanding of this biosedimentary system and its faunal characteristics.

Fossil Cenozoic crassatelline bivalves from Peru: New species and generic insights. Acta Palae onto- logica Polonica 61 (3): 661–688. Discoveries of new fossil Cenozoic crassatellines in Peru provide a new phylogenetic perspective on “large” Neogene genera, in which four lineages are considered to have arisen independently from different Paleogene Crassatella ances- tors. Latest Oligocene and early Miocene species of the new genus Tilicrassatella gen. nov.―T. ponderosa, T. torrens sp. nov., and T. sanmartini sp. nov. from the East Pisco Basin―probably evolved from the late Eocene species, Crassatella rafaeli sp. nov., which itself differed in significant respects from slightly older species of the East Pisco Basin, C. neo- rhynchus and C. pedroi sp. nov. The paciphilic genus, Hybolophus, is raised to full generic status. Added to its ranks are the East Pisco Miocene species H. maleficae sp. nov., H. terrestris sp. nov., and the oldest species of the genus, the late Eocene or Oligocene H. disenum sp. nov. from the Talara Basin of northern Peru. Kalolophus gen. nov., encompassing circum-Caribbean fossil species, the extant species, K. speciosus, and the trans-isthmus species, K. antillarum, appears to have evolved from the early Oligocene Floridian species, Crassatella portelli sp. nov. The genus Marvacrassatella is a western Atlantic Miocene lineage most likely descended from Kalolophus. The genus Eucrassatella is restricted to Australian and New Zealand taxa. The Eocene New Zealand species, Spissatella media, is transferred to Eucrassatella and deemed a candidate for the most recent common ancestor of younger Eucrassatella and all Spissatella species.

The studied interval can be subdivided into nine facies associations, reflecting a range of continental, marginal marine, nearshore and innermost shelf environments, and contains a well- preserved record of high-frequency relative sea-level changes in the form of a stack of three unconformity-bounded sequences. Each of the three sequences, designated Qm23, Qm22, and Qm21 from oldest to youngest, consists of a specific subset of the nine identified facies associations as a function of preserved depositional systems and systems tracts.
