Blaser was articulating the mythic space that he and his colleagues imagined they inhabited at Simon Fraser University and the University of British Columbia: a nation without borders, without nationality, and bound by the culture of poetry. The poetic practices of the San Francisco Renaissance, including beat, projective, and Black Mountain poetics, had taken hold in Vancouver in 1961 with poet Robert Duncan's visit to the city which had catalyzed the Tish poetry movement. In 1963, Charles Olson, Allen Ginsberg, and Robert Creeley participated in the Vancouver Poetry Conference, an event that marked the seriousness and vitality of the poetic avant-garde in Vancouver. The dominant narrative of avant-garde visual art in Vancouver dates its origins to the late 1960s, with the arrival of conceptualism, especially the ideas and work of Dan Graham and Robert Smithson. By contrast, this thesis argues for an earlier formation of the avant-garde, starting with the Tish poetry movement and continuing with a series of significant local events such as the annual Festival of the Contemporary Arts (1961-71), organized by B.C. -

THE LANGUAGE REVOLUTION: BORDERBLUR POETICS IN CANADA, 1963-1988 ERIC SCHMALTZ A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY GRADUATE PROGRAM IN ENGLISH YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, ONTARIO JUNE 2018 © ERIC SCHMALTZ, 2018 ii Abstract This dissertation examines the emergence and development of a radical node of Canadian poetic activity known as the Language Revolution––that is, a movement concerned with the creation and proliferation of largely non-lyrical poetic modes by a number of Canadian poets whose careers mostly began in the 1960s and early 1970s. These poets include well-known writers like bpNichol, bill bissett, and Steve McCaffery alongside lesser-known but equally important figures such as Judith Copithorne, Martina Clinton, Gerry Shikatani, David UU, Susan McMaster, and Penn Kemp. As a loose affiliation, they gathered around shared values of poetic experimentation and small press literary culture, but they also actively pushed the boundaries of writing by exploring concrete poetry, sound poetry, and haptic poetry––the core topics of this dissertation’s three chapters. These poets described their work as “borderblur,” a term that acknowledges a broad range of poetic and artistic activity that seeks to dissolve boundaries between language, visuality, materiality, sound, and bodies. Over the course of this study, I examine how the poets of the Language Revolution develop a borderblur-based poetic as a reaction to problems posed by the expression of feeling during a period when human life was being standardized by emergent telecommunication technologies, a rapid increase in consumerism, and major shifts––documented by Marshall McLuhan and others––in human psychic and social life. -

To take no more than the requisite, required to grow, spawn, catch, die: required to eat. — Daphne Marlatt, Steveston Put yourself inside the head of a bird as he’s flying down a channel of water. Okay. Now the image would be what you see if you’re outside on the bank looking up at him. That’s not what I’m inter- ested in. I’m interested in getting you inside his head in flight. And everything’s moving. There is no still reference point because he’s in flight, you’re in flight. Whoever’s reading. — Daphne Marlatt, Interview with George Bowering, Open Letter aphne Marlatt has long been interested in sustain- able environmental and linguistic inter-connections. In 1974, Dshe wrote of the Fraser River estuary in Steveston, “To take / no more than the requisite,” but the sentiment holds as much in her poetics and sparse writing as it does in her sustained biocentric focus. Further, in the interview below, she asks, “What do we need to be conscious of? What can’t we see, beyond the limit of our familiar perceptions and concepts? beyond the hungry edge of our personal needs, ambitions, and desires?” During the intervening forty-two years between Steveston and now, slightly longer than the time being celebrated in this issue of Studies in Canadian Literature, Marlatt has consistently reached past “familiar perceptions” in her poetry, prose, opera, editing, activism, and community engagement. -
