ABSTRACT The encyclicals and speeches of Pope John Paul II placed solidarity at the very center of the Catholic social tradition and contemporary Christian ethics. This disserta- tion analyzes the historical development of solidarity in the Church’s encyclical tradition, and then offers an examination and comparison of the unique contributions of John Paul II and the Jesuit theologian Jon Sobrino to contemporary understandings of solidarity. Ultimately, I argue that understanding solidarity as spiritual exercise integrates the wis- dom of John Paul II’s conception of solidarity as the virtue for an interdependent world with Sobrino’s insights on the ethical implications of Christian spirituality, orthopraxis, and a commitment to communal liberation.

The Holy See IOANNES PAULUS PP. II EVANGELIUM VITAE To the Bishops Priests and Deacons Men and Women religious lay Faithful and all People of Good Will on the Value and Inviolability of Human Life INTRODUCTION 1. The Gospel of life is at the heart of Jesus' message. Lovingly received day after day by the Church, it is to be preached with dauntless fidelity as "good news" to the people of every age and culture. At the dawn of salvation, it is the Birth of a Child which is proclaimed as joyful news: "I bring you good news of a great joy which will come to all the people; for to you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord" (Lk 2:10-11). The source of this "great joy" is the Birth of the Saviour; but Christmas also reveals the full meaning of every human birth, and the joy which accompanies the Birth of the Messiah is thus seen to be the foundation and fulfilment of joy at every child born into the world (cf. Jn 16:21). When he presents the heart of his redemptive mission, Jesus says: "I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly" (Jn 10:10). In truth, he is referring to that "new" and "eternal" life 2 which consists in communion with the Father, to which every person is freely called in the Son by the power of the Sanctifying Spirit. It is precisely in this "life" that all the aspects and stages of human life achieve their full significance.

  • The Theology of Suffering: Saint John Paul Ii’S Legacy of Love”
MARQUETTE UNIVERSITY “THE THEOLOGY OF SUFFERING: SAINT JOHN PAUL II’S LEGACY OF LOVE” SUBMITTED TO THE GRADUATE SCHOOL OF THEOLOGY IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE MASTERS IN CHRISTIAN DOCTRINE DEGREE BY ERIC SZATKOWSKI MAY 7, 2014 You can’t have Easter Sunday without Good Friday. Period. In other words, all of the joy, peace, and eternal happiness awaiting us in heaven would be impossible without the suffering, death, and resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Sacred scripture is rich with examples that offer clues to the purpose and meaning of suffering, yet we need not look further than the words of Jesus himself: Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. MT 16: 24-25 Nonetheless, despite the clarity of scripture on the subject, humanity has always struggled with suffering and the question why an all-good and all-loving God would allow it to happen. Using the teachings and living witness of Pope John Paul II, this paper tackles the issue of suffering in a unique way. Specifically, through this author’s real-life faith journey encompassing nearly three decades and two careers. Whether it’s contemplating that Good Friday always precedes Easter Sunday, or merely by remembering an oft-used cliché like “No pain, no gain,” suffering is not only a necessary part of life, but an opportunity for holiness that enables us to draw closer to God and ultimately share fully in His divine life.

  • The Holy See
The Holy See ADDRESS OF HIS HOLINESS POPE JOHN PAUL II TO AN INTERNATIONAL HEALTH-CARE CONFERENCE Saturday, 8 November 1997 Venerable Brothers in the Episcopate and the Priesthood, Dear Brothers and Sisters, 1. I am pleased to extend a cordial welcome to each one of you attending the 12th International Conference organized by the Pontifical Council for Pastoral Assistance to Health-Care Workers on the theme: "The Church and Health in the World: Expectations and Hopes on the Threshold of the Year 2000". I wish to express particular gratitude to Archbishop Javier Lozano Barragán for his many efforts in organizing this Symposium and for the courteous words he addressed to me on behalf of all those present. With him I greet and thank all his co-workers. During these concentrated days of study and discussion, the various papers emphasized how complex health problems are, calling for joint, co-ordinated action for effectively involving not only health-care workers, called to offer increasingly "skilled" therapy and assistance, but also those engaged in the field of education, in the world of work, in protecting the environment and in the economic and political spheres. "To safeguard, recover and better the state of health means serving life in its totality", states the Charter For Health-Care Workers, drawn up by your Pontifical Council. In this perspective the lofty dignity of medical and health-care work takes the form of a collaboration with that God who in Scripture is presented as a "lover of life" (Wis 11:26). The Church commends you and encourages you in the work you undertake with generous readiness in the service of vulnerable, weak and sick life, at times leaving your homeland and even risking your lives in fulfilling your duty.

  • The Concept of Man's Salvation in the Thought of Saint John Paul II And
The Person and the Challenges Volume 8 (2018) Number 2, p. 29–55 DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.15633/pch.2560 Maciej Bogdalczyk ORCID: https://orcid.org/0000-0003-4861-1161 The Pontifical University of John Paul II in Krakow, Poland The concept of man’s salvation in the thought of Saint John Paul II and Paul Tillich: similarities and differences Abstract The presented text aims to distinguish the understanding of the concept of salvation by two significant Christian scholars: John Paul II and Paul Tillich. They come from two separate Christian traditions: Catholicism and Lutheranism. The concept of salva- tion is so crucial that it is the essence of understanding Christianity and, if recognized as the goal of every human life, the effort of understanding it becomes even more impor- tant. An insight into the notion of salvation, based on the indication of similarities and differences in its understanding, makes it more comprehensible and accessible to every Christian. Keywords John Paul II, Paul Tillich, salvation of man, ecumenism, Luteranism. 1. The concept of salvation In Greek religion, hope and the concept of salvation were closely related to the philosophy of man, who was perceived with acute dualism: man consists of soul and body. In its essence and because of being intangible, the soul is divine, whereas the body, as a material medium, is a prison for the soul. Therefore, the idea of salvation in ancient philosophical and religious systems took the The Person and the Challenges 30 Volume 8 (2018) Number 2, p. 29–55 form of longing for the salvation of the human soul from the bonds of the material body and the visible world.

  • The Holy See
The Holy See ADDRESS OF POPE FRANCIS TO PARTICIPANTS IN THE PLENARY SESSION OF THE PONTIFICAL COUNCIL FOR HEALTH CARE WORKERS (FOR HEALTH PASTORAL CARE) Clementine Hall Monday, 24 March 2014 Dear Brothers and Sisters, I welcome you on the occasion of your Plenary Session and I thank Archbishop Zimowski for his words. The Bishop of Rome is grateful to each of you for your commitment to the many brothers and sisters who bear the burden of sickness, disability, and difficult old age. Your work in these days is inspired by what John Paul II said of suffering, 30 years ago, in the Apostolic Letter Salvifici Doloris: “to do good by one’s suffering and to do good to those who suffer” (n. 30). John Paul II lived and witnessed to these words in an exemplary way. His was a living magisterium, which the People of God reciprocated with so much affection and veneration, recognizing that God was with him. It is true, in fact, that also in suffering no one is ever alone because God — in his merciful love for man and for the world — embraces even the most inhumane situations, in which the image of the Creator, present in everyone, is blurred or disfigured. Thus it was for Jesus in his Passion. In Him every human pain, every anxiety, every suffering was taken on out of love, out of pure desire to be close to us, to be with us. And here, in Jesus’ Passion, is the greatest lesson for anyone who wants to dedicate him-herself to serving our sick and suffering brothers.
