Healthy Communities; Low Impact Development & Green
Land Use Law Center Gaining Ground Information Database Topic: Healthy Communities; Low Impact Development & Green Infrastructure Resource Type: Planning Documents State: New York Jurisdiction Type: Municipal Municipality: Nassau County Year (adopted, written, etc.): 2010 Community Type – applicable to: Urban; Suburban Title: Replacing Paving with Trees Document Last Updated in Database: April 19, 2018 Abstract Nassau County suggests planting medium height plants and trees on paved medians. Nassau goes further by promoting the use of double curbs to improve the aesthetics and allow rain to percolate into the ground, reducing runoff and improving water quality. These low impact development and green infrastructure policies will reduce sotrmwater runoff and improve water quality. Resource Existing medians on arterials are mostly paved; some areas have low plantings. Adding planting beds with medium height plants and trees to paved medians along with a double curb, as shown in Figure 3-9, will greatly improve the aesthetics of commercial corridors. In some locations a landscaped buffer can also be added between the roadway and parking areas by removing a row of parking from the lot. This would allow space for a widened sidewalk along the roadway with plantings on either side. This sidewalk could potentially be used by bicyclists as well as pedestrians. Within parking lots, landscaping can be introduced between rows of parking. Trees in parking areas can provide shade and reduce heat generated by large swaths of asphalt. Planting areas would allow rain to percolate into the ground, reducing stormwater runoff and improving surface and near-shore water quality. Nassau County, New York’s Master Plan can be found here: https://www.nassaucountyny.gov/DocumentCenter/View/1193 2010 Nassau County Master Plan Draft: October 26, 2010 CHAPTER 3 LAND USE: TARGET SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT TO GROWTH AREAS POLICY 3: PROTECT AND MAINTAIN ECONOMICALLY VIABLE COMMERCIAL LAND USES AND RESIDENTIAL NEIGHBORHOODS BY DIRECTING FUTURE DEVELOPMENT TO TARGETED GROWTH AREAS. -
