It is also known as Gitopanishad, or the Gita Upanishad, as it encapsulates most of the important aspects of the knowledge of the Vedas. Bhagavad means of God and Gita means song. Hence, the Bhagavad Gita literally means Song of God. It describes the divine dialogue that took place between the Supreme Lord Shree Krishna and his devotee Arjun on the battle ground. Since its teachings are exceedingly profound, the Bhagavad Gita required an equally insurmountable crisis as its setting. This was the impending war of Mahabharat that threatened to engulf the whole of India at that time. Unable to deal with the immediate problem at hand, Arjun approached Shree Krishna for a palliative to overcome the anguish he was experiencing. Shree Krishna did not just advise him on his immediate problem, but digressed to give a profound discourse on the philosophy of life. Hence, the Bhagavad Gita imparts, above everything else, Brahma Vidya, the science of God-realization. However, it is not content with providing a lofty philosophical understanding; it describes clear-cut techniques for implementing its spiritual precepts for everyday life. These techniques of applying the science of spirituality in our lives are termed Yog. The Bhagavad Gita is also called Yog Shastra, meaning, the scripture that teaches the practice of Yog. Thus, all its eighteen chapters are designated as different types of Yog because they deal with methodologies for the application of spiritual knowledge to practical life.In this authoritative commentary, Swami Mukundananda reveals the original meanings of the verses with crystal clear explanations and perfect logic. Adopting a comprehensive approach, he intersperses his purports with illustrative stories and real-life examples to make the teachings easy to comprehend and implement in everyday living. The first thing that struck me when I started reading this book was the simplicity of the authors style. All I could think was this is too good to be true! The author not only explains Shree Krishnas verses, but has gone through tremendous efforts to ensure the explanations are clear and easy to understand, even for someone that has little or no Vedic knowledge. This is reflected in the simplistic style of his writing that is rich with detailed explanations and many examples that one can easily relate to, making it an interesting read that is sure to keep the mind absorbed. I found myself unable to lay the book down after I begun. He also borrows quotes from other Vedic scriptures and teachings to further elucidate and fortify his commentary, eliminating any doubts that may arise in the mind of the reader as to the objectiveness of the commentary. In all honesty, I got this book at a time when my mind was plagued with questions and I was drowned in confusion and I needed an objective viewpoint. In this age where many things and opinions are very subjective, I really appreciate the authors painstaking efforts to present the reader with an objective commentary of the Gita rather than a subjective interpretation. It terribly eased the wariness in my mind.Shree Krishnas teachings accompanied by the rich and powerful yet simple commentary enchants the mind of the reader. I find the haziness in my mind blown away by the gentle breeze that comes with the understanding of the teachings in this book. Indeed, hats off to the author for providing such a gem. Now, I only hope the magic of the words in this book may touch and guide the lives of others as it does to me... • Gita Jayanti (Singapore)
Editorial The great work of Vedanta, ‘Yoga Vasishta Maharamayana’ commences with a question by a seeker by name Sutikshna, who goes to the hermitage of the great Guru Agasti in search of answers. His question is of tremendous significance. He asks, “What is it that will bring final release from the bondage of life? Is it works or knowledge? Or both?”. To this question Agasti replies, “The birds do fly in the sky with the help of both their wings; just so is final liberation achieved through both knowledge and works. Neither of the two alone can bring release. Hence both knowledge and works are requisite for moksha.” This answer is of great relevance to students of Gita who are seekers of wisdom, at the same time living active lives in the world. Yoga Vasishta affirms that the highest Truths and realizations are very much for those living here and now. The whole question is how the works are performed in the world and also what is proper knowledge. Gita provides invaluable guidance on how the works are to be performed and also on spiritual wisdom. One needs to be both a dynamic and active personality whose works excel, all done as an offering, but at the same time being an instrument of the Lord, for the Universal music to flow through. Now, what is this knowledge or Jnana? Srimad Devi Bhagavatam throws light on this matter. It says there are two types of knowledge – (1) merely sound (Shabdakam) and (2) from deep experience (Anubhava Jnanam). By mere intellectual study, all one gets is the Shabdaka Jnana or auditory knowledge.
