Blumhardt, formerly of the Bengal Civil Service, who has for several years been employed in cataloguing the works in the North Indian Vernaculars in the Museum Library. It is, perhaps, the first attempt that has been made to arrange Bengali writings under authors' names ; and the principles on which this has been done are fulh stated in the Preface. GEO. PEEFACE In submitting to the public the present Catalogue of Bengali books contained in the Library of the British Museum the compiler finds it necessary to explain the general principles of cataloguing adopted by him, and the special rules laid down for the treatment of Oriental names of authors and books. He has tried to observe throughout one consistent plan of transliteration, based on intelligible principles of etymology, yet rejecting alike the popular mode of writing names according to their modern pronunciation, and the pedantic system of referring everything back to its original Sanskrit form ; thereby making unnecessary deviations from proper Bengali idiom. -

It points to union of natural beings with super nature. Jayadeva Radha is not only radiant, fascinating or angelic, she represents celestial beauty and her union with Krishna, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, unfolds supreme love and eternal delight. One does not require surveying the history, delving deep into texts and characteristic features of Odissi system to understand its classy style if he at least reads and listens to Gitagovinda of Sri Jayadeva. As this sacred piece of lyrical poem contains all the salient and distinguishing features of classical music, the reader or listener must appreciate the uniqueness and wholesomeness of Odissi as the third system of classical music in the domain of Indian music. Sri Jayadeva has not only originated a specific music tradition, systematic form and definite melodic pattern, raga-tala repertoires but also built a socio-cultural community. The purity, sanctity and characteristic features of Odissi music have been enriched refined and pervaded its horizon through Gitagovinda of Sri Jayadeva. Nitai-zine One Some reflections on Initiation (re-edited) Neal Delmonico (Nitai Das) June 13, 2005 [This is a corrected and edited version of the very first issue of Nitai-zine. My memory was imperfect when I first wrote this. After all many years had passed since the events described herein. As I thought more about those events I found they began to reappear with more detail. Hopefully, most of the misconceptions and misremem- berings have been corrected in this version. I have also tried to pin down the events of Sarasvat¯ı’s great admission before Pandit R¯amakr.s.n. a D¯asB¯ab¯athat he had not actu- ally received initiation from Gauraki´soraD¯asB¯ab¯ato a more specific time and location. Those details have been added to this version of the account. — Nitai Das] Recently, among the many other projects I have started and not finished, I was working on Visvan´ atha¯ Cakravartin’s Kr.s.n. a-bh¯avan¯amr.ta, a delightful poem embodying the r¯ag¯anuga-bhakti practice of smaran. a or visualization. The very first verse of the text contains the word parampar¯a, which, among other things, may be translated disciplic succession. The verse reads like this in my translation: I surrender to the rain-cloud Kr.s.n. a Caitanya, who instantly de- stroys the darkness of the world and refreshes the whole world through uninterrupted succession of showers of his beauty like the beauty of millions of gods of love.1 It is a nice image. Caitanya is like a rain cloud pouring down his beauty like rain on a dusty, thirsty world. -

Altogether these independent regions came under one administrative control which was known as Utkala and subsequently Orissa. The name of Utkala has been mentioned in Mahabharata, Ramayana and Puranas. The existence of Utkala as a kingdom is found in Kalidas's Raghuvamsa. It is stated that king Raghu after having crossed the river Kapisa reached the Utkala country and finally went to Kalinga. The earliest epigraphic evidence to Utakaladesa is found from the Midnapur plate of Somdatta which includes Dandabhukti within its jurisdiction1. The plates record that while Sasanka was ruling the earth, his feudatory Maharaja Somadatta was governing the province of Dandabhukti adjoining the Utkala-desa. The Kelga plate 8 indicate s that Udyotakesari's son and successors of Yayati ruled about the 3rd quarter of eleventh century, made over Kosala to prince named Abhimanyu and was himself ruling over Utkala After the down-fall of the Matharas in Kalinga, the Gangas held the reines of administration in or about 626-7 A, D. They ruled for a long period of about five hundred years, when, at last,they extended their power as far as the Gafiga by sujugating Utkala in or about 1112 A. -

Reply to Kundali Prabhu by Krishnakant In this paper we will be responding to selected comments that Kundali prabhu has made in chapters 9-11 in his book ‘Is Discrimination Jnana-Yoga’? These chapters deal with Kundali’s views on the so called ‘ritvik philosophy’. The first point to note about his treatise is that most of it is based on his speculations of what the so-called ‘ritvik’ theory is, rather than what it really is. He never quotes from any ritvik source but simply takes a stab as to what this philosophy is supposed to say. In particular his comments do not in any way deal with the points brought out in the ‘Final Order’, the definitive ritvik position paper. This is only to be expected since his book was written before the ‘Final Order’ was released. This does however make his chapters on the ritvik issue largely redundant, since they do not deal with the actual ritvik position, but his supposed speculations on the subject. The comments that Kundali prabhu makes will be boxed, and from now on Kundali prabhu shall be referred to as the author. “There is no functional difference in using the word ritvik guru or guru. Thus we find no sastric support for the concept of ritvik guru. Either one is guru or is not.” (Chapter 9, p47) Immediately the author has displayed his ignorance on the subject. The ‘Final Order’ nor Srila Prabhupada ever use the term ‘ritvik-guru’. So the points the author makes above may well be correct but they have no relevance at all to the actual ritvik position that makes no reference to a ‘ritvik-guru’. -

The Bhakti Cycle of Assamese Lyrics: Bargits and After Maheswar Neog --- www.atributetosankaradeva.org presents before the readers a pioneering paper on the Vaisnava music of Assam, authored by Dr. Maheswar Neog. It covers virtually every aspect of the devotional lyric of the Sankaradeva Movement (and also traces its progress through time). This paper was written in the early part of the latter half of the 20th century when Bargit research was still at a nascent stage. Editing note(s):- Diacritics has been used sparingly; generally only the long diacritic (macron) pertaining to a/A has been highlighted and that too, depending upon the context. --- Introduction In the latter half of the fifteenth century Sankaradeva (1449-1568 A.D.), a Kayastha by caste, founded a school of neo-Vaisnavism in Assam. This religion has a monotheistic doctrine based on the Bhagavata Purana and is called Eka-Sarana Nama- Dharma. It enjoins the worship of the one Supreme Deity or Visnu, specially in His incarnation as Krsna and interdicts its followers from the worship of any other god or goddess. The Radha-Krsna cult is not acknowledged in his system of Vaisnavism. Of the different modes of bhakti or devotion, the dasya (servile) mode was insisted upon by Sankaradeva. (Dr. B. Kakati, The Mother Goddess Kamakhya, 1948, pp. 75-77). The attitude of the votary is to look upon Krsna - not as a play-mate as in sakhya (friendship), not as one’s child as in vatsalya (filial love), not as the male lover as in madhura (conjugal love), nor as an impersonal Being as in santa rasa (calm sentiment) - but as the master demanding love and veneration of the devotee as of a servant. -

PURPORT This verse is very important to the Krsna consciousness movement. In his Amrta- pravaha-bhasya, Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura explains that one should not think that because Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu was born a brahmana and was situated in the topmost spiritual order as a sannyasi, it was improper for Him to receive instructions from Srila Ramananda Raya, who belonged to the sudra caste. To clarify this matter, Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu informed Ramananda Raya that knowledge of Krsna consciousness is more important than caste. In the system of varnasrama-dharma there are various duties for the brahmanas, ksatriyas, vaisyas and sudras. Actually the brahmana is supposed to be the spiritual master of all other varnas, or classes, but as far as Krsna consciousness is concerned, everyone is capable of becoming a spiritual master because knowledge in Krsna consciousness is on the platform of the spirit soul. -

Free Writes Mortality Baladeva is in anxiety because he goes out shopping and he’s afraid he’ll bring back the Covid virus and infect me. He knows the spiritual master is in Krsna’s hands and cannot be affected by karma. Not only Baladeva, but my disciples are phoning in and asking about my well-being. Materially speaking, I’m a prime candidate for the virus. I’m 80 years old, have weak lungs, diabetes, and a history of repeated pneumonia. The devotees are all facing the issue of their mortality and my mortality. They are questioning how they would fare if I were not present in the world. 2 The whole world population is facing the issue of mortality. People are taking precautions with antivirus equipment and social distancing, and there’s a grave mood rather than a frivolous one. A small number of devotees have died from the virus. The number of cases is slowing down to a plateau, and the politicians and health officials are agitated about when we can relax the restrictions and open up the schools and go back to work. The devotees would like to resume their regular activities of holding Sunday feasts and harinama gatherings and normal preaching contacts with the people.
