  • You're Listening to Ocean Currents, a Podcast Brought to You by NOAA's Cordell Bank National Marine Sanctuary
1 July 7th, 2014, oc070714.mp3 Free Diving and El Nino 2014 Jennifer Stock, Francesca Koe, Logan Johnson Jennifer Stock: You're listening to Ocean Currents, a podcast brought to you by NOAA's Cordell Bank National Marine Sanctuary. This radio program was originally broadcast on KWMR in Point Reyes Station, California. Thanks for listening! Welcome to another edition of Ocean Currents, I'm your host, Jennifer Stock. On this show I talk with scientists, educators, explorers, policy-makers, ocean enthusiasts, adventurers and more, all uncovering and learning about the mysterious and vital part of our planet: the blue ocean. I bring this show to you monthly on KWMR from NOAA's Cordell Bank National Marine Sanctuary, one of four national marine sanctuaries in California all working to protect unique and biologically diverse ecosystems. Cordell bank is located just offshore of the KWMR listening radius off the Marin-Sonoma coast, and it's thriving with ocean life above and below the surface. The ocean holds so many mysteries to us: the habitats, the life, the mysterious ways it moves and mixes, its temperatures, its ability to absorb carbon dioxide. And as a species-- as humans-- we've made great strides on being able to enter it and see it below the surface with technology aiding greatly. Before scuba was invented we were limited by our breath to explore underwater, and this is how humans first accessed the sea, and today we still access the sea this way. If you've ever held your breath underwater before you have been free diving.

FUDGE FINAL 7-8-14 (DO NOT DELETE) 7/9/2014 8:40 AM GANG DEFINITIONS, HOW DO THEY WORK?: WHAT THE JUGGALOS TEACH US ABOUT THE INADEQUACY OF CURRENT ANTI-GANG LAW Precisely what constitutes a gang has been a hotly contested academic issue for a century. Recently, this problem has ceased to be purely academic and has developed urgent, real-world consequences. Almost every state and the federal government has enacted anti-gang laws in the past several decades. These anti-gang statutes must define ‘gang’ in order to direct police suppression efforts and to criminally punish gang members or associates. These statutory gang definitions are all too often vague and overbroad, as the example of the Juggalos demonstrates.

  • No Limits Freediving
1 No Limits Freediving "The challenges to the respiratory function of the breath-hold diver' are formidable. One has to marvel at the ability of the human body to cope with stresses that far exceed what normal terrestrial life requires." Claes Lundgren, Director, Center for Research and Education in Special Environments A woman in a deeply relaxed state floats in the water next to a diving buoy. She is clad in a figure-hugging wetsuit, a dive computer strapped to her right wrist, and another to her calf. She wears strange form-hugging silicone goggles that distort her eyes, giving her a strange bug-eyed appearance. A couple of meters away, five support divers tread water near a diving platform, watching her perform an elaborate breathing ritual while she hangs onto a metal tube fitted with two crossbars. A few meters below the buoy, we see that the metal tube is in fact a weighted sled attached to a cable descending into the dark-blue water. Her eyes are still closed as she begins performing a series of final inhalations, breathing faster and faster. Photographers on the media boats snap pictures as she performs her final few deep and long hyperventilations, eliminating carbon dioxide from her body. Then, a thumbs-up to her surface crew, a pinch of the nose clip, one final lungful of air, and the woman closes her eyes, wraps her knees around the bottom bar of the sled, releases a brake device, and disappears gracefully beneath the waves. The harsh sounds of the wind and waves suddenly cease and are replaced by the effervescent bubbling of air being released from the regulators of scuba-divers.

  • Geek Policing: Fake Geek Girls and Contested Attention
International Journal of Communication 9(2015), 2862–2880 1932–8036/20150005 Geek Policing: Fake Geek Girls and Contested Attention JOSEPH REAGLE1 Northeastern University, USA I frame the 2012–2013 discourse about “fake geek girls” using Bourdieu’s theory of fields and capital, complemented by the literature on geeks, authenticity, and boundary policing. This discourse permits me to identify the reciprocal relationship between the policing of identity (e.g., Am I a geek?) and the policing of social boundaries (e.g., Is liking an X-Men movie sufficiently geeky?). Additionally, geekdom is gendered, and the policing of fake geek girls can be understood as a conflict over what is attended to (knowledge or attractiveness), by whom (geekdom or mainstream), and the meaning of received attention (as empowering or objectifying). Finally, despite the emergence of a more progressive and welcoming notion of geeks-who-share, the conversation tended to manifest the values of dominant (androcentric) members. That is, in a discourse started by a woman to encourage other women to be geeky, some of the loudest voices were those judging women’s bodies and brains according to traditionally androcentric and heteronormative values. Consequently, in this boundary and identity policing, women faced significant double binds, and the discourse exemplified a critical boomerang in which a critique by a woman circled back to become a scrutiny of women by men. Keywords: authenticity, boundaries, capital, geek, gender, policing, subculture In March 2012, Tara Tiger Brown (2012), a self-described “tech entrepreneur, educator and opinion writer,” wrote an article entitled “Dear Fake Geek Girls: Please Go Away.” The article prompted much discussion, generating 250 comments below the article itself as well as thousands of comments elsewhere.

Regendered works, such as the TV series Elementary, illustrate the complexity of representation, and the ongoing imbalanced landscape of media. I develop a more cohesive understanding of the fannish counterpublic and its complex approaches to creativity and gender by grounding the research and data collection in fan studies, gender studies, and literary theory. This thesis uses interviews, surveys, and observations of fannish communities, and close readings of regendered texts and media, to develop two theories of regendered effects. One: the position of regendered work within fannish counterpublics is one centred on the conflicts and tensions between lived experiences and the media landscape, performed through the creative forms that characterise their communities. Fannish experiences of gender and sexuality influence their reception of those works, and how they practice regendering as a creative process. Two: these works then reinforce that counterpublic by correcting the gender imbalance of the initial work, and re-othering the expectations of that work.

A hurricane roared and raged through the night. And in the middle of the chaos, a cargo ship was sinking down down down to the ocean floor. The ship left hundreds of crates floating on the surface. But as the hurricane thrashed and swirled and knocked them around, the crates also began sinking into the depths. One after another, they were swallowed up by the waves, until only five crates remained. By morning the hurricane was gone. There were no clouds, no ships, no land in sight. There was only calm water and clear skies and those five crates lazily bobbing along an ocean current. Days passed. And then a smudge of green appeared on the horizon. As the crates drifted closer, the soft green shapes slowly sharpened into the hard edges of a wild, rocky island. The first crate rode to shore on a tumbling, rumbling wave and then crashed against the rocks with such force that the whole thing burst apart.
