  • Rails by the Sea.Pdf
1 RAILS BY THE SEA 2 RAILS BY THE SEA In what ways was the development of the seaside miniature railway influenced by the seaside spectacle and individual endeavour from 1900 until the present day? Dr. Marcus George Rooks, BDS (U. Wales). Primary FDSRCS(Eng) MA By Research and Independent Study. University of York Department of History September 2012 3 Abstract Little academic research has been undertaken concerning Seaside Miniature Railways as they fall outside more traditional subjects such as standard gauge and narrow gauge railway history and development. This dissertation is the first academic study on the subject and draws together aspects of miniature railways, fairground and leisure culture. It examines their history from their inception within the newly developing fairground culture of the United States towards the end of the 19th. century and their subsequent establishment and development within the UK. The development of the seaside and fairground spectacular were the catalysts for the establishment of the SMR in the UK. Their development was largely due to two individuals, W. Bassett-Lowke and Henry Greenly who realized their potential and the need to ally them with a suitable site such as the seaside resort. Without their input there is no doubt that SMRs would not have developed as they did. When they withdrew from the culture subsequent development was firmly in the hands of a number of individual entrepreneurs. Although embedded in the fairground culture they were not totally reliant on it which allowed them to flourish within the seaside resort even though the traditional fairground was in decline.

  • How Getting to Sorrento
HOW GETTING TO SORRENTO: 1) For the people who arrive straight to Naples (Capodichino) airport From Capodichino airport you can get to Sorrento in several ways: a) Airport-Sorrento Bus the best solution is taking a CURRERI VIAGGI (www.curreriviaggi.it) Capodichino-Sorrento bus, it is 10 € and it takes 75 min to get to Sorrento from Naples (Capodichino) airport ( 6 buses a day, every day, at 9 - 11 - 13 - 14.30 - 16,30 - 19,30). You can buy the ticket on the bus and you can take the bus in front of Arrival Hall. b) Bus + Train from the airport there is a public transport of Naples municipality AMN, called Alibus , whose times can be seen on-line (http://www.anm.it/Upload/RES/PDF/ORARI/Capodichino.pdf). The ticket is 3€, it leaves every 20 min, from 6,30 to 24,00 and you can go straight both to Naples centre and to Garibaldi square central station, whence you can get to Sorrento by Circumvesuviana train (local transport) in about 60 min. You can find the times on http://www.vesuviana.it/web/files/Napoli%20Sorrento%20A4.pdf. The Circumvesuviana station is at the lower floor of Central station, it is called Naples Garibaldi and it is well evident. The AMN bus stop at the airport is opposite the arrivals. c) Taxi If you want to get to Sorrento by taxi I suggest to take an official taxi by standing in a queue on the right, coming out of the airport, near the municipal police. The taxi is quite expensive, about 70/100 € and you have to pay the return too because the distance is over 50 Km.

This report presents the results of an analysis of the impact that international freight traffic barriers have on logistics, transit potential, and development of transport corridors traversing EAEU member states. The authors of EDB Centre for Integration Studies Report No. 49 maintain that, if current railway freight rates and Chinese railway subsidies remain in place, by 2020 container traffic along the China-EAEU-EU axis may reach 250,000 FEU. At the same time, long-term freight traffic growth is restricted by a number of internal and external factors. The question is: What can be done to fully realise the existing trans-Eurasian transit potential? Removal of non-tariff and technical barriers is one of the key target areas. Restrictions discussed in this report include infrastructural (transport and logistical infrastructure), border/customs-related, and administrative/legal restrictions. The findings of a survey conducted among European consignors is a valuable source of information on these subjects. The authors present their recommendations regarding what can be done to remove the barriers that hamper international freight traffic along the China-EAEU-EU axis.

EDITORIAL Judging from the large numbers of letters from members, issue number 70 seems to have been well received, and I am most grateful to all those of you who took the trouble to write, particularly those who either sent or offered articles and photographs. We are gradually building up a stock of articles, but as mentioned before, the provision of suitable illustrations for these articles is still something of a problem and I will be most pleased to hear from anyone who can offer any good, sharp, black and white pictures of any aspect of the narrow gauge. It is a great pleasure to be able to include in this issue an article from one of our Australian members while two other illustrations in this issue have come from contributors in America and East Germany. I very much hope this will be the start of a trend and I will be receiving many more contributions from those of you living overseas who have access to much material denied to us in Britain. · From the next issue I hope to use this page to comment on various aspects of the narrow gauge scene (but NOT internal Society affairs) and will always be pleased to receive your views for possible inclusion in our correspondence pages. The Buddha lived and taught in the northeastern Indian subcontinent some time between the 6th and 4th centuries BCE.[2] He is recognized by adherents as an awakened teacher who shared his insights to help sentient beings end suffering (or dukkha), achieve nirvana, and escape what is seen as a cycle of suffering and rebirth. Two major branches of Buddhism are recognized: Theravada ("The School of the Elders") and Mahayana ("The Great Vehicle"). Theravada—the oldest surviving branch—has a widespread following in Sri Lanka and Southeast Asia, and Mahayana is found throughout East Asia and includes the traditions of Pure Land, Zen, Nichiren Buddhism, Tibetan Buddhism, Shingon, Tendai and Shinnyo-en. In some classifications Vajrayana, a subcategory of Mahayana, is recognized as a third branch.
