Title: Water supply shortage From the year 2000 the people in my village had used and drink the water from drilling well, there were 9 boreholes in the village , but the water was not enough in dry season due to many households per one well which made the well broken so often. So far for maintenance it we made a roof and made fence for each boreholes and clear the area around the boreholes. If the there some boreholes or pumps had broken, the villagers will repair themselves and if there were some spare parts to buy for repairing they have collect the money from villagers for buying the spare parts. If there were some big damages t the villagers could not repair by themselves they will proposed to the concerned section to repair it. In this village there were no jar for rain water collection, because most of the people are still poor they have not enough money to make the jar. In dry season when the water from drilling well was not enough many of the villagers have to use the water from Sekong river for bathing and washing and watering the kitchen garden. If the source of drinking water in the village dry up only villagers could not do anything, we have to propose to the upper part to help us. Title: Crops production and irrigation In the village had planted tobacco, corn, cucumber, and many kinds of vegetable which we grow along the Sekong river bank. water for watering was enough because we used the water from Sekong river. We planted the crops was for consumption and for sale some. The level of Sekong river in dry season was decreased in each years due to many people destroyed the forest and some wood traders had cut the big tree. Therefore it make the source of water had changed. Title: Flood So far as I had experienced, in this village there were flood more than drought, in around 3 or 4 years it will flood one time, but severe or not depends on the volume of rain water in each year. In this years the flood rather severe because it caused the damages for the rice field about 43 ha. The total area of the low land rice field of this village was about 151 ha. but they did not do all of these area due to in the beginning of the rainy season there were no rain, the rain was so delayed therefore most of the farm did not cultivate all. We could not forecast about the flood. The damage from the flood of this year was 43 ha. and covered to 41 households, but some households their rice field was not damaged all, only half of their farm was damaged, but 8 households was damaged all. In order to sustain for their lives they have to grow another crops and some people have to went to town for being a construction labor. Voice sender: Adult , Femaleale Occupation of Voice sender: Farmer/ housekeeper Number of member in the family: 6 , Male 2, Female 4 How long do you live in this village: 45 years. Title: Fish products 10 years before the number of fishes in the river and in the swamp in the village area were a lot, in each time we can catch 20 to 30 kg . but now even only for each meal was very difficult to get it. The number of fishes was decreased due to the water in the river was decreased and the population was increased and they used many kinds of fishing gear to fish such as casting net, gill net and even the prohibited equipment such as electric shock and some time also bombing they also used. There fore it made the number of fishes decreased. In this village they also have regulation for fishing, but some people were disobeyed the regulation. The species of fishes that had extinct, Pa Souay, Pawa, Paphone. Title: The climate change 3/9 Water Voices in Lao PDR - Final Report -December 2005 Now the weather was not the same as before, in winter the weather before was very cold not in winter was not cold, in summer was very hot they causes of the climate change was the forest was destroyed. Many years before the people was also did slash and burn but they did not cut the big tree, not most of the big tree was cut and the watershed area was empty without tree. Therefore it made the climate changed, in rainy season if it rain it will rain so much and the water will be over flow and damaged every things. In summer it will be very hot abnormally. Name of voice sender: Mrs. Boukham Kingkeo , Age: 51 years. Voice sender: Adult , Female Occupation of Voice sender: Housekeeper Number of member in the family: 8 , Male 5, Female 3 How long do you live in this village: 51 years. Title: Water supply shortage The source of water for drinking and using in this village is from water supply of the municipality if Samakhixai district, but the water was not enough for use in dry season due to the source of water for making water supply was from Sekong river in dry season Sekong river was very scarce of water for making water, therefore in some months there were no water to supply for the people in the district. Villagers in the village have to take water from the neighbors who had drilling well, for bathing and washing clothes they have to go to Sekong river. In the village there many households had made the jar for containing rain water saving for using in the time when the water supply were shortage. Some households they did not have jar because they don’t have enough fund to make it. For water in this village was the big problem for the villagers not only in this village also in others villages in the district. The price of water supply was reasonable. not so high. Name of voice sender: Mr. Bounna Thongsa , Age: 50 years. Voice sender: Adult , Male Occupation of Voice sender: Construction worker Number of member in the family: 5 , Male 3, Female 2 How long do you live in this village: 25 years. Title: Bank erosion There were some places that had bank erosion in the area of this village, the causes that make the bank erosion that is because the government had constructed the new bridge at Sekong river in the municipality of Samakhixai district, and they had moved the ferry port out of the place that they will construct the bridge and they have to excavated the bank of Sekong river, but they did not make the bank erosion protection , therefore in rainy season the flow the water in Sekong river was very severe and eroded the bank and slide down to the river . For example in this years the rain was very heavy and the bank was eroded much. To solve this problem the villagers had to request to the upper parts to do anything that will not make the bank erode.
