CHOOSE TOPIC RESEARCH

COCKTAIL NOTE-TAKING

I am a hobby mixologist and frequent imbiber of craft . I chose this topic because I have intimate knowledge of the needs of potential users. I wanted to create an app that I saw a potential market for and one that I would like to use if it existed.

The concept is a note-taking application that would replace the paper notebook that I bring to bars with me. It would let the user record drinks, add tasting notes, upload photos, and record location, providing formatting options superior to both paper note-taking and generic note-taking applications. The potential user of this app is not just an average bar-goer or even Thinking ahead to how this app might become a a craft beer and wine aficionado. There are plenty of apps for those viable product, I tried to consider the secondary looking to snap a photo of a bottle label and look up prices, reviews, audience—the people who would will be and more information. But there are a unique set of needs and interested in having this product make them constraints when it comes to creating an app of value for cocktail money. The potential audience for my app is a sponsorship. The app lets uses record the location very specific type of bar-goer or mixologist—craft cocktail enthusiasts of their drinks, so specific bars and restaurants who are looking for a better way to record and subsequently reflect might be interested in having their locations upon their cocktail drinking history. The app will appeal to those who highlighted for nearby users. Or when beginning a enjoy cocktails as an almost intellectual endeavor, rather than a drink entry with a classic recipe, specific liquor tastier-than-normal means to consume alcohol. There is so much brands might be interested in having their brand as chemistry and finesse behind mixology that it could be considered the top suggestion for that drink recipe. an academic subject, and this app is for the type of person who treats it with that level of respect. IDENTIFY PROBLEMS

WITH PAPER Paper-based notes can be lost and are difficult to organize. You COCKTAIL 1 NOTE-TAKING could use a generic digital note-taking app, but it doesn’t offer enough formatting options to elegantly store drink recipes, ratios, recipe instructions, and measurement units. Simple note-taking also detailed note-taking ignores the inherently visual component of a cocktails tasting experience—want to be able to snap a photo and have it associated with the drink. COCKTAIL 2 WITH OTHER Beer and wine drinking have been extensively addressed with apps, DRINKING APPS but they are inherently brand & label based, but cocktails offer the unique challenge of featuring recipes with multiple ingredients, less detailed note-taking different units, and instructions.

WITH OTHER Dedicated cocktail apps exist, but they are primarily for recipe COCKTAIL 3 COCKTAIL APPS searches and liquor cabinet maintenance. They tell users what they should drink and how to do it, but few (if any) allow users to create a rich and browsable drinking history, complete with recipes, tasting

DESIGN

IF MY APP WERE A PERSON, WHAT KIND WOULD HE BE? WHAT WOULD HE BE INTERESTED IN? This app’s users are mature and sophisticated, going about cocktail tasting as an intellectual gustatory pursuit. They would not be interested in the sort of app that proclaims to know “what you should be drinking right now!” or where the nearest liquor store is so that they can make a standard .

If this proposed app were a person, he would be the suave gentleman at the polished bar, in an effortless suit and perhaps glasses, sporting a vintage watch, with a worn leather ledger in his breast pocket. He enjoys craft cocktails, but also fine cigars and reads classic literature while enjoying a snifter of scotch in his leisure time.

It was the emerging theme of libations, ledgers, and literature than inspired the name and general aesthetic of my app: My Drinking Ledger.

ADDITIONAL DESIGN CONCERNS must be legible and easy to use in a dark bar–its most likely place of use must include flexible recipe entry fields and customizable measurement units DESIGN: TOP-LEVEL FUNCTIONS
