My Drinking Ledger” APP DESIGN “MY DRINKING LEDGER” Conceived, designed, and created by Erin Kennedy. [email protected] | erinaissance.com | 703.987.7178 METHODOLOGY CHOOSE TOPIC RESEARCH COCKTAIL NOTE-TAKING I am a hobby mixologist and frequent imbiber of craft cocktails. I chose this topic because I have intimate knowledge of the needs of potential users. I wanted to create an app that I saw a potential market for and one that I would like to use if it existed. The concept is a cocktail note-taking application that would replace the paper notebook that I bring to bars with me. It would let the user record drinks, add tasting notes, upload photos, and record location, providing formatting options superior to both paper note-taking and generic note-taking applications. METHODOLOGY PRIMARY AUDIENCE SECONDARY CRAFT COCKTAIL CONNOISSEURS BUSINESS MODEL The potential user of this app is not just an average bar-goer or even Thinking ahead to how this app might become a a craft beer and wine aficionado. There are plenty of apps for those viable product, I tried to consider the secondary looking to snap a photo of a bottle label and look up prices, reviews, audience—the people who would will be and more information. But there are a unique set of needs and interested in having this product make them constraints when it comes to creating an app of value for cocktail money. From an ad-placement perspective, I connoisseurs. believe liquor brands, bars and restaurants, and barware producers would enjoy the opportunity to Not everyone brings a tasting notebook out to a bar or orders a advertise directly to this targeted market of users. drink with the intention of contemplating its flavors and Additionally, there might be the opportunity for remembering the experience. The potential audience for my app is a sponsorship. The app lets uses record the location very specific type of bar-goer or mixologist—craft cocktail enthusiasts of their drinks, so specific bars and restaurants who are looking for a better way to record and subsequently reflect might be interested in having their locations upon their cocktail drinking history. The app will appeal to those who highlighted for nearby users. Or when beginning a enjoy cocktails as an almost intellectual endeavor, rather than a drink entry with a classic recipe, specific liquor tastier-than-normal means to consume alcohol. There is so much brands might be interested in having their brand as chemistry and finesse behind mixology that it could be considered the top suggestion for that drink recipe. an academic subject, and this app is for the type of person who treats it with that level of respect. METHODOLOGY IDENTIFY PROBLEMS WITH PAPER Paper-based notes can be lost and are difficult to organize. You COCKTAIL 1 NOTE-TAKING could use a generic digital note-taking app, but it doesn’t offer enough formatting options to elegantly store drink recipes, ratios, recipe instructions, and measurement units. Simple note-taking also detailed note-taking ignores the inherently visual component of a cocktails tasting experience—want to be able to snap a photo and have it associated with the drink. COCKTAIL 2 WITH OTHER Beer and wine drinking have been extensively addressed with apps, DRINKING APPS but they are inherently brand & label based, but cocktails offer the unique challenge of featuring recipes with multiple ingredients, less detailed note-taking different units, and instructions. WITH OTHER Dedicated cocktail apps exist, but they are primarily for recipe COCKTAIL 3 COCKTAIL APPS searches and liquor cabinet maintenance. They tell users what they should drink and how to do it, but few (if any) allow users to create a rich and browsable drinking history, complete with recipes, tasting notes become doodles notes, locations, and dates. METHODOLOGY PROPOSED SOLUTION TOP-LEVEL SECONDARY 1 BROWSE DRINKING HISTORY - browse history chronologically - browse history by location - save & view favorites 2 ADD NEW DRINKS - add a custom drink & recipe - start from classic drink/recipe - repeat a drink from the past 3 VIEW PAST DRINK DETAILS BROWSE START DRINK LIST click on drink name swipe across a drink name + click to add new drink VIEW COCKTAIL X repeat/clone drink start with a classic recipe add a custom drink DETAILS delete search pre-populates next screen pre-populates next screen click to edit details click to repeat drink with previous ingredients with ingredients and recipe and recipe, but today’s date ADD COCKTAIL SCREEN add name, photo, bar/location, ingredients, notes, favorites save EVENT / SCREEN user action CELEBRATION SCREEN option device action LO-FI WIREFRAMES TO FLESH OUT USER FLOW, NECESSARY FIELDS, AND SCREENS METHODOLOGY DESIGN IF MY APP WERE A PERSON, WHAT KIND WOULD HE BE? WHAT WOULD HE BE INTERESTED IN? This app’s users are mature and sophisticated, going about cocktail tasting as an intellectual gustatory pursuit. They would not be interested in the sort of app that proclaims to know “what you should be drinking right now!” or where the nearest liquor store is so that they can make a standard margarita. If this proposed app were a person, he would be the suave gentleman at the polished bar, in an effortless suit and perhaps glasses, sporting a vintage watch, with a worn leather ledger in his breast pocket. He enjoys craft cocktails, but also fine cigars and reads classic literature while enjoying a snifter of scotch in his leisure time. It was the emerging theme of libations, ledgers, and literature than inspired the name and general aesthetic of my app: My Drinking Ledger. Top 50 Cocktails 50 hand picked delicious cocktails to inspire, intrigue and tantalise your taste buds Our Top 50 Cocktails Over the past few years we’ve collated, tried, tested and been inspired by a host of amazing cocktails. From the classics to the new age crazy concoctions, we’ve enjoyed seeing what new directions bartenders and cocktail enthusiasts are taking. In this book we’ve collated our top 50 cocktails, that as a team we worked hard on to produce. We took into account the votes by all you amazing users on our site to try and maintain some sense of normality, while at the same time including some amazing inspired new creations. When we hit any heated discus- sions, there was only one thing for it - to taste test the cocktails to ensure we only chose the best. We hope you enjoy trying some of these as much as we did choosing and tasting them ourselves. Whatever you’re after, your favourite choice of tipple, or your mood we hopefully have included something to intrigue and inspire you. Nick Wilkins Make Me A Cocktail creator Equipment Cocktail Shaker You can’t get far with most cocktails without the staple of any personal home bar - the cocktail shaker. Add some ice to the ingredients within, shake for 10-15 seconds and strain into the required glass. Simple. Strainer Right after the cocktail shaker comes the strainer. Some shakers have a basic strainer built in, but to catch all those ice lumps or fruit pieces you don’t want in your finished product, a simple strainer suffices.

Audrey Saunders’ delicious riff on the Moscow Mule, the Gin-Gin Mule ¾ oz fresh lime juice 1 oz simple syrup 2 mint sprigs 1¾ oz Tanqueray London dry gin 1 oz homemade ginger beer* Shake all ingredients well, strain into a tall Collins glass filled with fresh ice. Garnish with a lime wheel, a sprig of mint and a piece of candied ginger. Serve with a straw. *Ginger Beer 1 gallon water 1 pound ginger root, peeled 4 oz light brown sugar or 6 oz light agave syrup 2 oz fresh lime juice Place the water in a sauce pan, bring to a boil. Cut the ginger into smaller pieces and mix this in a food processor with some of the hot water until the mixture resembles mulch. Then add this back into the pot of water, turn off the heat, cover, and allow it to steep for one hour. Once cooled, strain the mixture through cheese cloth or a sieve, extracting as much flavor from the solids as you can. Discard the solids. Add the lime juice and sugar/syrup, stir. Let cool, then transfer to bottle(s). Store in refrigerator. Note: this will not yield a conventional, carbonated ginger beer.

FORGOTTEN CLASSICS & LESSER-KNOWN TIPPLES Throughout history, bars have played an integral part in society and culture. No matter the occasion, they have been a mystical and alluring place where stories are told and memories are created. At Louix Louis, we wish to share with you lesser known classics and vintage cocktails that will bind you to our bar forever. We ask you to take a chance, have new experiences, and let the spirits guide you.
