St. MaelruairYs Graveyard Headstone Transcriptions Digitised from the St. MaelruairYs Teamwork Project Explanatory Note - How to use the Catalogue of Inscriptions The following is an example of a typical headstone included in this report. It is hoped that by studying the following that reading the inscriptions or indeed finding a headstone will be made simpler. Plot Maps are to be found at the end of this book. Original Page: 123 Plot Ref: A 172 1 / 2 Mason: N. P Roe Rathfarnham 3 Black marble headstone. 4 HORAN 5 SEAN HORAN DIED 29TH APRIL 1971 AGED 52 YEARS THY WILL BE DONE 1. This is the page of the original publication on which the burial was recorded, and the section in which the headstone is to be found. There are 12 Sections, A, B, E, F, G, H, I, J, K and L, and each section is clearly drawn on the survey maps. See overall map showing where each section is located. 2. Each headstone is given a number to aid in the drawing of the maps. No two headstones in the one section have the same number making it extremely easy to find the headstone in question. 3. The stone mason and where possible the address. It is only in recent years that masons have started putting their names on the headstones. In the older part of the graveyard this is a rarity. 4. The most important part of the headstone is the inscription. The inscription usually provides us with all the information necessary to find out who was buried there, what age they were and even their occupation.
