Olivet Nazarene University May 2011 Major Area: Ethical Leadership Number of Words: 117 Law enforcement has been recognized as a stressful occupation related to deleterious physical and psychosocial outcomes in police officers' lives. Spirituality interrelates with every dimension of human functioning and has demonstrated a significant relationship to physical and mental health. This study was concerned with the implication of these conclusions, and addressed a gap in literature that has neglected to bridge these realizations due to limited assessment of spirituality in police officers. Measures of spirituality and police stress in a sample of police officers were collected utilizing two test instruments, and analyzed to determine the relationship. The results indicated a moderate, positive spirituality and average experience of stress in the sample, with several significant, positive relationships between measures. iv TABLE OF CONTENTS Chapter Page I. The occupational stressors which accompany police work are one explanation for the transformation. Police work consistently has been regarded in the literature as a stressful occupation, though some critics have asserted that no or inadequate evidence exists to support the claim (Dantzer, 1987; Terry, 1981). For example, a number of early figures in the field of psychology--e.g., Helmholtz, James, Wundt--were initially trained in medicine. However, the predominant focus in psychology up until recently has been on mental rather than physical health. In the years after World War II, a small, but increasing, number of psychologists began conducting research on phenomena other than strictly mental health concerns. Notable among this work was Neal Miller's pioneering research on the conditioning of physiological processes and the resulting flurry of interest in biofeedback. Another example is the development of the Health Belief Model by Godfrey Hochbaum, S. Stephen Kegeles, Howard Leventhal, and Irwin Rosenstock-- four psychologists in the U. S. Public Health Service who were trying to understand why people were not becoming vaccinated against tuberculosis. In addition, more and more psychologists were being employed by Schools of Medicine, Nursing, and Public Health, as well as the Veterans Administration and hospitals specialing in acute and rehabilitative medicine. These psychologists and their university-based colleagues, originally trained in clinical, counseling, experimental, or social psychology, applied their favorite theories and methods to phenomena that had as much to do with the physical as the mental aspects of health and illness, including the interaction between the brain and the body.

I declare that my thesis consists of 85,595 words. 2 Abstract Emotions are gaining an increasingly prominent role in the study of International Relations. As a relatively new frontier, there is still considerable work to be done in streamlining various efforts into a systematic study. These efforts have largely circled on describing the cognitive and action potential of specific emotions, such as anger, fear and trust. This thesis is concerned with an extreme emotion, the emotion of rage. I stress the action potential of revenge, as well as the cognitive elements at play here, most specifically the issue of abrupt changes to morality.
