Scott, PhD University of Pittsburgh, 2019 The term Latin jazz has often been employed by record labels, critics, and musicians alike to denote idioms ranging from Afro-Cuban music, to Brazilian samba and bossa nova, and more broadly to Latin American fusions with jazz. While many of these genres have coexisted under the Latin jazz heading in one manifestation or another, Panamanian pianist Danilo Pérez uses the expression “Pan-American jazz” to account for both the Afro-Cuban jazz tradition and non-Cuban Latin American fusions with jazz. Throughout this dissertation, I unpack the notion of Pan-American jazz from a variety of theoretical perspectives including Latinx identity discourse, transcription and musical analysis, and hybridity theory. -

Alberto Munarriz A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY GRADUATE PROGRAM IN MUSIC YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, ONTARIO March 2015 © Alberto Munarriz, 2015 i Abstract This dissertation examines the various dialogues that have shaped the evolution of contemporary tango variants in Paris since the late 1970s. I focus primarily on the work of a number of Argentine composers who went into political exile in the late 1970s and who continue to live abroad. Drawing on the ideas of Russian linguist Mikhail Bakhtin (concepts of dialogic relationships and polyvocality), I explore the creative mechanisms that allowed these and other artists to engage with a multiplicity of seemingly irreconcilable idioms within the framing concept of tango in order to accommodate their own musical needs and inquietudes. In addition, based on fieldwork conducted in Basel, Berlin, Buenos Aires, Gerona, Paris, and Rotterdam, I examine the mechanism through which musicians (some experienced tango players with longstanding ties with the genre, others young performers who have only recently fully embraced tango) engage with these new forms in order to revisit, create or reconstruct a sense of personal or communal identity through their performances and compositions. I argue that these novel expressions are recognized as tango not because of their melodies, harmonies or rhythmic patterns, but because of the ways these features are “musicalized” by the performers. I also argue that it is due to both the musical heterogeneity that shaped early tango expressions in Argentina and the primacy of performance practices in shaping the genre’s sound that contemporary artists have been able to approach tango as a vehicle capable of accommodating the new musical identities resulting from their socially diverse and diasporic realities. -

C. Gottlieb 2017-18 Season, A Musical Voyage Around the World, with South of the Border. This energetic and colorful program features music from Mexico, Cuba, Brazil South of the and Argentina; and it will feature guest violinist David Kim, Concertmaster of Border the Philadelphia Orchestra, performing The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires by Saturday the great tango composer Astor Piazzolla. George Gershwin took a vacation February 3, 2018 to Cuba and was inspired to write his dazzling Cuban Overture—full of that 7:30pm island’s famous dance rhythms. Heitor Villa-Lobos, the most famous Brazilian composer, was a life-long devotee of the music of Bach. He wrote an entire Lawrence Golan, series of pieces called Bachianas Brasileiras that blend the style of Bach with courtesy KimPhoto of David conductor Brazilian folk music. We will be performing the most famous of the set, No. David Kim, violin, concertmaster 5. This season, we already had a concert featuring Mariachi music. On this of the Philadelphia Orchestra concert, we have two “classical” works that have the style of mariachi infused into their fabric: Moncayo’s Huapango and Galindo’s Sones de Mariachi. We GUEST ARTIST SPONSORSHIP DEDICATED TO will conclude the program with one of the most well-known pieces from The Voyage of the Monarch Butterfly south of the border, Dances from the ballet Estancia (an Argentine ranch), by Alberto Ginastera. -

I analyze practices of cultural consumption involving records in Medell¶³n,Colombia's second largest city and most important industrial center at the time. The study sheds light on some of the complex connections between two simultaneous historical processes during the mid-twentieth century, mass consumption and socio-political strife. Between 1930 and 1953, Colombian society experienced the rise of mass media and mass consumption as well as the outbreak of La Violencia, a turbulent period of social and political strife. Through an analysis of written material, especially the popular press, this work illustrates the use of aesthetic judgments to establish social di®erences in terms of ethnicity, social class, and gender. Another important aspect of the dissertation focuses on the adoption of music gen- res by di®erent groups, not only to demarcate di®erences at the local level, but as a means to inscribe these groups within larger imagined communities. -

Introduction This text exists to provide help to dancers who want to know what they need to do in order to improve their skills in Tango, and teachers who want ideas on how to help their students. In the process of endeavoring to establish a Tango school we have noticed many students of Tango being confused about what to focus on, and as a result losing motivation. In the absence of clear, objective, trustworthy frameworks for growth provided by experienced dancers, learners will often invent their own, which can be misleading or incoherent, and lead to wasted energy. When we (somewhat hesitantly) instituted our first objective test of skills, the “200 level exam,” it was interesting to notice how productive, engaged, and curious learners became in the process of preparing for the exam. They would attend classes and take lessons more often, ask more thoughtful questions, ask people to practice with them, engage more deeply with teacher’s feedback. Defining, maintaining and defending class levels has been a conundrum for teachers. Most students are not able to accurately selfassess, so they go to the wrong classes. Classes cannot be taught at an “Advanced” level if they are filled up with dancers who are beginners. -

THE DEVIL’S HORN AND THE MUSIC OF THE BROTHEL APPROACHING ADAPTATION AND PERFORMANCE OF TANGO FOR THE CLASSICAL SAXOPHONIST A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Musical Arts at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music The University of Sydney Jonathan Byrnes 200108443 October 2015 Abstract The purpose of this thesis is to establish a concise and well-considered approach to the performance of tango music by a classical saxophonist. It explores the significance of adaptation to a saxophonist by investigating the integral role it has had on the performance, promotion and education throughout the instrument’s history. To this end, this thesis also traces the tradition of adaptation in Western Classical music. When approaching the adaptation of tango it is important to recognise the differences in the music’s culture. We are ultimately changing the context of the music by arranging it for another instrument. Therefore, a fervent discussion of the issues surrounding the idea of schizophonic mimesis are explored in an effort to maintain due respect for the original composition while bringing something new to it. The impact of schizophonic mimesis on our audience’s expectations, the stylisation of music, and the respect to the tradition of the other culture are discussed, and establish the need for a well- informed and stylistic approach. To help address the various issues, this thesis gives a historical account of, what we will refer to as the tango’s ‘tangible’ and ‘intangible’ stylistic traits, and will propose a new approach to saxophone tango performance through a series of established and novel techniques. -

For more information, please contact [email protected]. 2014 Claremont Colleges Library Undergraduate Research Award First-Year Award Winner Olivia Zalesin Pomona College Reflective Essay Undergraduate Research Award Reflective Essay “Jewish Tango.” Seems like an odd yet intriguing combination of words--does it not? That’s what I thought back in September as I sat in my dorm room brainstorming potential paper topics for my ID1 Seminar, “Tripping the Light Fantastic: A History of Social and Ballroom Dance.” Tango was an obvious choice to respond to a prompt, which read, “Write about any dance form you find interesting.” I’d been fascinated with the tango ever since I’d learned about the dance’s history in a high-school seminar on Modern Latin America and subsequently tried the dance myself in one of Buenos Aires’ famous dance halls. The Jewish element was, however, my attempt to add some personal element and to answer my own curiosity about a question that had been nagging at me ever since I heard my first tango music.
