Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106- 1346 Abstract This dissertation constitutes a discussion of Nagarjuna’s Madhyamaka as contained in his six main philosophical works. It presents a synoptic pre­ sentation of the main topics Nagarjuna investigates. Particular emphasis is put on an analysis of the philosophical content of Nagarjuna’s Madhyamaka. Apart from discussing the soundness of Nagarjuna’s arguments for particular conclusions I also want to examine to which extent Nagarjuna’s philosophy forms a coherent philosophical system rather than a collection of individual ideas. The dissertation consists of four parts. In the first part (chapter 2) I dis­ cuss the central concept of Madhyamaka philosophy, the notion ofsvabhava. This is a notion of considerable complexity; for the purposes of understanding Nagarjuna’s arguments I argue that it is particularly important to distinguish two of its conceptual dimensions: an ontological and a cognitive one. The second part (chapters 3 and 4) discusses some properties of the form of Nagarjuna’s arguments, properties which are, however, also intricately connected with their contents attempting to establish the Madhyamaka the­ ory of emptiness. The two topics investigated are the place of negation in Nagarjuna’s philosophical assertions and his use of the argumentative frame­ work known as the catuskoti or tetralemma. An analysis of the background of these formal aspects is indispensable for an understanding of Nagarjuna’s 3 4 arguments presented in the following chapters. The third part (chapters 5 to 9) discusses Nagarjuna’s arguments dealing with particular topics, such as causation, motion, the self, epistemology, and language. Here Nagarjuna sets out to establish the absence of svabha- va in areas which are particularly central to our cognitive interaction with the world. He investigates both the world around us (for the examples of causation and motion), the subjective world (the self) as well as the way in which the two are connected (by our epistemic faculties and by language). The final fourth part (chapter 10) attempts to present a concise synoptic overview of Nagarjuna’s conclusions described in the preceding chapters and sets out to evaluate them from a systematic point of view. I also discuss how these various conclusions form a coherent philosophical whole and attempt to evaluate some of them in the light of the contemporary philosophical discussion.     Thinking in Buddhism: Nagarjuna’s Middle Way 1994 Jonah Winters About this Book Any research into a school of thought whose texts are in a foreign language encounters certain difficulties in deciding which words to translate and which ones to leave in the original. It is all the more of an issue when the texts in question are from a language ancient and quite unlike our own. Most of the texts on which this thesis are based were written in two languages: the earliest texts of Buddhism were written in a simplified form of Sanskrit called Pali, and most Indian texts of Madhyamika were written in either classical or “hybrid” Sanskrit. Terms in these two languages are often different but recognizable, e.g. “dhamma” in Pali and “dharma” in Sanskrit. For the sake of coherency, all such terms are given in their Sanskrit form, even when that may entail changing a term when presenting a quote from Pali. Since this thesis is not intended to be a specialized research document for a select audience, terms have been translated whenever possible,even when the subtletiesof the Sanskrit term are lost in translation.In a research paper as limited as this, those subtleties are often almost irrelevant.For example, it is sufficient to translate “dharma” as either “Law” or “elements” without delving into its multiplicity of meanings in Sanskrit. Only four terms have been left consistently untranslated. “Karma” and “nirvana” are now to be found in any English dictionary, and so their translation or italicization is unnecessary. Similarly, “Buddha,” while literally a Sanskrit term meaning “awakened,” is left untranslated and unitalicized due to its titular nature and its familiarity.

These two terms refer to the theories of eternalism (sassata-diṭṭhi) and annihilationism (uccheda-diṭṭhi), the basic misconceptions of actuality that in various forms repeatedly reappear in the history of human thought. Eternalism is the belief in a permanent substance or entity, whether conceived as a multitude of individual souls or selves, created or not, as a monistic world-soul, a deity of any description, or a combination of any of these notions.

    Bhāvaviveka’s Critique of the Theory of Three Natures遍依圓三性in Karatalaratna 《掌珍論》 . Kaspars Eihmanis PhD student, National Chengchi University, Faculty of Philosophy 1. Introduction. Mou Zongsan 牟宗三 in his lectures on the philosophy of Daodejing,1 interprets the first line of the first chapter “道可道,非常道” as introducing the notion of two truths. The permanent dao and the impermanent dao, as Mou contends, belong to the universal tendency found in various traditions of philosophy, both European and Asian that tends to distinguish two layers of truth in its attempt to understand the world. This twofold view of truth is recognizable in Plato’s two-world theory: the bifurcation of the world into sensible and intelligible, with the following introduction of the dichotomies of truth and opinion, reality and appearance etc. Kant’s distinction between noumena and phenomena is another example of the two- truth theory, although Mou contends, that such a reading is not without problems: things in themselves are not directly knowable. The source of this highly idiosyncratic reading of Laozi comes from Mou’s application of the theory of two truths found in his application of the notion “one mind opens two gates” ⼀⼼開⼆⾨, borrowed from the Awakening of Faith in Mahāyāna 《⼤乘起信論》(“Mahāyāna Śraddhotpāda Śāstra”). Awakening of Faith is one of the most influential texts in the Far East Mahāyāna Buddhist tradition, which introduces a type of Yogācāra and Tathāgatagarbha synthesis. Leaving aside the questions of the authenticity of the text (Indian original vs. Chinese Apocrypha) and the authorship (Aśvaghoṣa vs. Paramārtha),2 what seems to be important, at least for Mou Zongsan, is the fact that the notion of the two the aspects of the mind ⼆⾨ that are found in the Awakening of Faith as the “thusness aspect of the mind” ⼼真如⾨ 1 Mou Zongsan 牟宗三, “Laozi Daodejing yanjianglu”⽼⼦《道德經》講演錄 (Lectures on Laozi’s “Daodejing”).

The first investigates the general issue of wheth- er the Madhyamaka philosophy of emptiness (śūnyavāda) is consistent with a commitment to systematic ethical distinctions. The second queries whether the metaphysical analysis of no-self presented by Śāntideva in his Bodhicaryāvatāra entails the impartial benevolence of a bodhisattva. This article will critically examine these debates and demonstrate the ways in which they are shaped by competing under- standings of Madhyamaka conventional truth or reality (saṃvṛtisatya) and the forms of reasoning admissible for differentiating conventional truth from falsity and good from bad. 1 School of Philosophy, Research School of Social Sciences, Australian National Univer- sity.
