Media Release Closing Figures Resounding Success with 71'000 Visitors Media Release Closing Figures Resounding success with 71'000 visitors – 22% more viewers Main awards to Mexico, Denmark, Germany and Switrzerland Zurich, Oktober 6, 2013 The 9th Zurich Film Festival was a tremendous success. With a total of 71'000 visitors (previous year: 58'000), of these 4000 children and students, the festival has seen a more than 22% increase in viewer numbers. With 345 screenings (previous year 250) of 122 film titles (previous year: 111) and some 450 national and international guests (previous year: 350), the ZFF has once again experienced considerable growth. „This has been a phenomenal year for us across the board“, said delighted Co- Directors Nadja Schildknecht and Karl Spoerri. “With many screenings selling out completely, the changeable weather was ideal for us. Presenting works by young filmmakers, our competition section has become a firmly established feature on the international festival landscape. The various awards for debut works proves that we’re on the right track”, said Schildknecht and Spoerri. Tribute Award for Michael Haneke The awards for this year’s winning ZFF films were presented during an entertaining Award Night on Saturday evening at Zurich Opera House. The Golden Eyes from the four competition categories went to films from Mexico, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland. Further awards went to Germany and Great Britain. The evening’s highlight was, of course, the presentation of the A Tribute to… Award to Austrian screenwriter, TV, film, theatre and opera director Michael Haneke, who gained a worldwide reputation with such films as bENNY'S VIDEO, FUNNY GAMES, LA PIANISTE, CACHÉ, THE WHITE RIBbON and most recently AMOUR. In his moving presentation speech, German actor Burghart Klaussner, who worked with Haneke on THE WHITE RIbbON, emphasised the fact that the award was for his ‚previous’ work, and hoped that there are still further films to come. Haneke himself made it clear that the award was also for his longstanding team and his actors, without whom his work would not be possible. Awards and Masters Acting star Hugh Jackman, who received this year’s Golden Icon Award on the first Saturday evening at the corso cinema, was the source of the largest gathering of fans in festival history. With Tim bevan (Career Achievement Award) and Harrison Ford (Lifetime Achievement Award), the festival honoured two further cinema greats. Michael Haneke, Tim bevan and Harrison Ford, jury member Markus Imhoof and surprise guest Harvey Weinstein all answered questions posed by the public at completely sold out ZFF Masters sessions. Entertaining cinema audiences, a large number of films were accompanied by their respective director, including Alfonso Cuaron (GRAVITY), Atom Egoyan (DEVIL’S KNOT), Denis Villeneuve (PRISONERS), Oliver Hirschbiegel (DIANA), Jonathan Teplitzky (THE RAILWAY MAN), James Grey (THE IMMIGRANT), Ryan Coogler (FRUITVALE STATION), Caroline Link (EXIT MARRAKECH), Xavier Koller (DIE SCHWARZEN bRÜDER) and Markus Imboden (AM HANG). Further festival guests included such actors as Daniel brühl, Martina Gedeck and James McAvoy, producer legend Arthur Cohn, musician Gentleman, footballer Ronaldo, such jury members as Marc Forster, Veronica Ferres, Melissa Leo and Rolf Lyssy and many, many more. Golden Eyes The juries of the four competition categories gave their respective main award, the Golden Eye, to Diego Quemada-Diez’s LA JAULA DE ORO from Mexico (International Feature Film), Kaspar Astrup Schroeder’s LEJ EN FAMILIE A/S (RENT A FAMILY INC.) from Denmark (International Documentary Film), Frauke Finsterwalder’s FINSTERWORLD from Germany (German-Language Feature) and Anna Thommen’s NEULAND from Switzerland (Documentary Germany, Austria, Switzerland). International Casting Directors Network Index 01 Welcome 02 About the ICDN 04 Index of Profiles 06 Profiles of Casting Directors 76 About European Film Promotion 78 Imprint 79 ICDN Membership Application form Gut instinct and hours of research “A great film can feel a lot like a fantastic dinner party. Actors mingle and clash in the best possible lighting, and conversation is fraught with wit and emotion. The director usually gets the bulk of the credit. But before he or she can play the consummate host, someone must carefully select the right guests, send out the invites, and keep track of the RSVPs”. ‘OSCARS: The Role Of Casting Director’ by Monica Corcoran Harel, The Deadline Team, December 6, 2012 Playing one of the key roles in creating that successful “dinner” is the Casting Director, but someone who is often over-looked in the recognition department. Everyone sees the actor at work, but very few people see the hours of research, the intrinsic skills, the gut instinct that the Casting Director puts into finding just the right person for just the right role. It’s a mix of routine and inspiration which brings the characters we come to love, and sometimes to hate, to the big screen. The Casting Director’s delicate work as liaison between director, actors, their agent/manager and the studio/network figures prominently in decisions which can make or break a project. It’s a job that can't garner an Oscar, but its mighty importance is always felt behind the scenes. In July 2013, the Academy of Motion Pictures of Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) created a new branch for Casting Directors, and we are thrilled that a number of members of the International Casting Directors Network are amongst the first Casting Directors invited into the Academy.

  • THE MYTH of 'TERRIBLE TURK' and 'LUSTFUL TURK' Nevs
THE WESTERN IMAGE OF TURKS FROM THE MIDDLE AGES TO THE 21ST CENTURY: THE MYTH OF ‘TERRIBLE TURK’ AND ‘LUSTFUL TURK’ Nevsal Olcen Tiryakioglu A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements of Nottingham Trent University for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy December 2015 Copyright Statement This work is the intellectual property of the author. You may copy up to 5% of this work for private study, or personal, non-commercial research. Queries or requests for any other use, or if a more substantial copy is required, should be directed in the owner(s) of the Intellectual Property Rights. i Abstract The Western image of Turks is identified with two distinctive stereotypes: ‘Terrible Turk’ and ‘Lustful Turk.’ These stereotypical images are deeply rooted in the history of the Ottoman Empire and its encounters with Christian Europe. Because of their fear of being dominated by Islam, European Christians defined the Turks as the wicked ‘Other’ against their perfect ‘Self.’ Since the beginning of Crusades, the Western image of Turks is associated with cruelty, barbarity, murderousness, immorality, and sexual perversion. These characteristics still appear in cinematic representations of Turks. In Western films such as Lawrence of Arabia and Midnight Express, the portrayals of Turks echo the stereotypes of ‘terrible Turk’ and ‘lustful Turk.’ This thesis argues that these stereotypes have transformed into a myth and continued to exist uniformly in Western contemporary cinema. The thesis attempts to ascertain the uniformity and consistency of the cinematic image of Turks and determine the associations between this image and the myths of ‘terrible Turk’ and ‘lustful Turk.’ To achieve this goal, this thesis examines the trajectory of the Turkish image in Western discourse between the 11th and 21st centuries.
