Helicosporous Hyphomycetes from China

(2007). Helicosporous hyphomycetes from China. Fungal Diversity 26: 313-524. Morphological studies of anamorphic taxa with helicospores (helicosporous fungi) were carried out based on observation of specimens collected in China and comparisons with descriptions in the literature. After examination of more than 300 freshly collected specimens and 100 herbarium specimens, we conclude that 71 species in 14 genera are presently known in mainland China, including 9 new species and 2 new combinations. The new species are Helicomyces denticulatus G.Z. Zhao, Xing Z. Liu & W.P. Wu; Helicosporium dentophorum G.Z. Zhao, Xing Z. Liu & W.P. Wu; Helicosporium sympodiophorum G.Z. Zhao, Xing Z. Liu & W.P. Wu; Helicoma hainanense G.Z. Zhao, Xing Z. Liu & W.P. Wu; Helicoma hyalonema G.Z. Zhao, Xing Z. Liu & W.P. Wu; Helicoma latifilum G.Z. Zhao, Xing Z. Liu & W.P. Wu; Helicoma scarabaeiforme G.Z. (2006). Systematic revision of Tubeufiaceae based on morphological and molecular data. Fungal Diversity 21: 105-130. The family Tubeufiaceae is circumscribed for taxa in the Pleosporales that possess superficial, white, pallid to bright, ascomata, which may darken at maturity. The family currently includes 21 genera with varied taxonomic histories, a result of disparate opinions regarding the importance of several different morphological characters. In this study, nucleotide sequences from 28S rDNA from different taxa of the Tubeufiaceae and allied families were analysed under different optimality criteria (Maximum Parsimony, Likelihood and Bayesian) to assess phylogenetic relationships. Phylogenies obtained using different tree construction methods yielded essentially similar topologies. Results from the molecular data do not correspond to established morphological schemes. Characters such as colour of ascomata, shape of ascospores and anamorphic taxa do not appear to be significant in delineating several genera within the Tubeufiaceae, while at the familial level, Tubeufiaceae does not appear to be restricted to those bitunicate fungi characterised by superficial, white and pallid to bright ascomata and filiform ascospores. -

New synonymous generic names are included in the outline. In future outlines attempts will be made to incorporate all synonymous generic names (for a list of synonymous generic names, see Eriksson & Hawksworth 1998). To date, this fungal group has largely been neglected by biodiversity studies. However, this fungal group is of interest, as it may contain potential biocontrol agents of pathogenic fungi that cause beech Tarcrust disease (BTC), which has contributed to the devastation of European beech (Fagus sylvatica) forests. Biscogniauxia nummularia has been demonstrated to cause BTC. However, a trophic association between mycoparasites and pathogenic Biscogniauxia spp., has not been established. This study aimed to taxonomically identify and characterize Biscogniauxia, a fungus causing destructive BTC disease in European beech at Lov´cennational park, Montenegro and to uncover the diversity of mycopathogens that are natural regulators of xylariaceous Biscogniauxia stroma formation, associated with beech decline. This finding is supported by distinctive phylogenetic and evolutionary characteristics, as well as unique morphological-microscopic fungal features indicating that Biscogniauxia from Montenegro, which is a major cause of BTC occurring in ancient beech forests at the edge of southern Fagus sylvatica distribution, may be described as a novel fungus specific to Fagus. -

It is placed in the Tubeufiaceae and is characterized by having dark, setose ascomata, cellular pseudoparaphyses, bitunicate asci, hyaline, multiseptate, cylindrical-fusiform to elongate fusiform ascospores, Helicosporium and Helicomyces anamorphs and occurrence on rotten wood or on stromata of other ascomycetes. Six species are accepted in Acanthostigma. Acanthostigma ellisii, A. longisporum, A. perpusillum, A. revocatum, A. minutum and A. scopulum are redescribed and illustrated on the basis of re-examination of type material. A new combination for A. longisporum is proposed. A key to species in Acanthostigma is provided. Acanthostigma filis- porum is excluded and its affinity to the Niessliaceae is discussed. Acanthos- tigmina is relegated to synonymy with Acanthostigma. Two species previously referred to Acanthostigmina and one to Tubeufia sect. Acanthostigmina are not accepted in Acanthostigma and are transferred to Taphrophila in the Tubeufiaceae and proposed as three new combinations T.
