Touhou Gauntlet

You get Exactly ZERO points to start off and must take drawbacks to get any!

Drawbacks No limit.

Full of Hot Air – +100: Unfortunately, you lose all your out-of-jump knowledge. A Drop-In will only know what they could reasonably know as a modern Japanese citizen, while a Local will lose all knowledge of the Outside World and how its technology operates. To cope with this, you fill in any gaps in your knowledge with wild, rational-seeming guesses that are only correct half the time at best.

I Am the Strongest – +100: Like a certain ice , your ability to evaluate your own strength is… misguided. You will consider yourself stronger than anyone you meet and feel a compulsion to prove it.

Intolerant – +100: Like a certain wild and horned hermit, you have a particularly short temper when it comes to human failings. Especially those of a lazy, greedy shrine maiden and her thief friend. On the upside, you do make a rather good Taoist.

Poverty – +100/+200: You have no luck with making money. At all. Expect to stay forever poor and desperate. This may manifest in many ways, from not being paid by your boss, to simply having nobody show up and donate at your shrine. For an additional bonus 100, you are also rather desperate to find as many quick ways to make money as possible.

Constantly Bothered – +200: Like a certain shopkeeper, you can barely spend a single day without the girls letting themselves in to your house/store and taking your stuff/starting fights. Additionally, this takes away all of your combat abilities, leaving you helpless to prevent the girls from bothering you on the regular.

Everyone is Straight in Gensokyo – +200: Exactly what it says. Unfortunately for you, while the gender distribution is heavily skewed, the sexual orientation distribution is not. If you’re a woman, you won’t be getting any romance in your time here. If you’re a man… you don’t know what you’re in for you poor bastard. No, you won’t like it.

Icicle Fall – +200: You don’t exactly have the best of time designing spell cards. In fact, one of yours has a giant, obvious blind spot you completely fail to notice and still confidently bring out in your repertoire.

Shikigami – +300: You are a , akin to a computer program downloaded into a willing body, under the ownership of a certain Ms. Yukari Yakumo. Unfortunately, Yukari happens to believe in giving her shikigami a good beating if it starts acting up. She won’t render you incapable of working, but it will be rather painful and embarrassing. As the cherry on top, Yukari is also extremely lazy, prone to sleeping entire seasons, and will expect you to do all the work unless something truly catastrophic strikes.

Youkai Exterminator – +600: You have the unfortunate and perpetually unappreciated job of putting the youkai back in line when they go around causing an incident. Don’t think you can ignore them either, if you try it’ll just end up even worse for you. Unfortunately, should you resolve an incident, they’ll feel entitled to crash your place and make you put a party on for them. Agreeing will cause humans to suspect you’re in league with youkai and avoid you. Refusing will upset them and probably make you feel bad.

Locations

Roll 1d8 or pick for 50 points. Some options may be free.

1. Hakurei Shrine: The shrine maiden Reimu works tirelessly here to make any amount of money possible. 2. Human Village: Non-Drop-In humans may pick this freely. 3. Scarlet Devil Mansion: 4. Bamboo Forest of the Lost: 5. Forest of Magic: 6. Netherworld: 7. Youkai Mountain: Tengu may pick this location for free. 8. Free Pick: Pick anywhere in Gensokyo, from the Former Hell to Heaven. Ability to leave not included. Race The races of Gensokyo are many and come from all manner of mythical creature. Because there’s half-youkai and half-phantoms and more running around, you may pick no more than two origins and combine them creatively to receive a lesser version of the strengths and weaknesses of both. For instance, being a Human and a God would make you an Arahitogami, a “living god” who does not require worship to live but grows stronger from gathering faith.

Human – Free: It’s a human. You should know how they work. In Gensokyo, humans are kept around as youkai require their fear to feed. Excepting Drop-In origins, you will receive a very limited, subtle form of protection from youkai, though it resembles a farmer tending to his cattle than anything else. • Hermit – 200: Hermits are humans who spent so much time in meditation they have become endowed with supernatural powers. Additionally, you can now subside off nothing more than mist and sunlight with no ill effects. Unfortunately, your flesh is supernaturally delicious and empowering to youkai, fortunately you are now strong enough to chase the average youkai off. Meditate long enough and you might even become a celestial. • Magician – 200: The natural laws of Gensokyo are rather different to those of the outside world, and those who study and refine them are called magicians. Your magical transformation is considered complete the minute you can learn to halt your own aging and fully become a youkai.

God – 200: Gods here are closely based of the Yaoyorozu no . As a god, your power is closely tied to how much faith you can gather. Run out, and you’ll die. On the other hand, gather a lot of faith, and you can surpass Hecatia or Junko. That said, you’re starting out close to human.

Youkai – Varies: Gensokyo’s Youkai come in many different categories. All youkai age extremely slowly and are strongly resistant to physical attacks, though vulnerable to magic and mental attacks. • Fairy – Free: Generally considered the weakest youkai, have the body and mentality of a child. They are the minor embodiments of nature, able to create hidden homes in trees that cause nature to bloom and recover around them. Ordinarily, fairies get resurrective immortality, but you don’t get that here. It’s a gauntlet, after all. • Ghost - Free: Ghosts are the souls of humans who still linger in the world, generally for having unfinished business. Aside from having a corpse somewhere, they are largely indistinguishable from normal humans. Not to be confused with phantoms. • Beast Youkai – 100: You are some form of animal that has become a youkai, potentially by eating a human or simply living long enough. You have a humanoid form (typically with some tell such as animal ears and a tail) and can shift back into your natural form at will. • – 100: You are an inanimate object that gained sentience, possibly through the Miracle Mallet or from existing for a whole century. Your true body is the original common good, such as an umbrella or a mask, and a human body you control. • – 200: Aquatic youkai • – 200: Not to be confused with the satori named Satori, the satori are youkai who can read thoughts through a large third eye that hangs around their body. Regrettably, satori are distrusted for their ability to pry into the mind, and only two are known to exist. One of whom lobotomised herself and the other lives in seclusion in Hell. • Tengu – 400: Tengu are among the strongest known species of youkai, having speed unmatched by any with the possible exception of the vampires. They come in several castes from the animal they are based upon, the two known ones are crow and white wolf tengu; crow tengu are the information caste, while wolf tengu are the warrior caste. Crow tengu have retractable wings based on crow wings, and the artists can’t make their minds up if the white wolf tengu have any wolf features at all. • – 400: Vaguely similar to western , oni are the physically strongest known youkai, with the possible exception of the vampires. As an oni, you have horns and feel a strong psychological aversion to fried beans and holly leaves with a salmon head stuck on them. • Vampire – 600: Potentially as fast as a tengu and as strong as an oni, vampires would be the strongest youkai… except they suffer the classical vampire weaknesses – need to feast on blood and vulnerability to sunlight being the prime examples. Vampires may additionally turn living creature into a vampire by drinking all their blood in one sitting; not easy for vampires turned when they were a young child. • Custom – Varies: There are almost as many kinds of youkai in Gensokyo as there are youkai themselves. You may create a custom youkai based on any mythology to become here. Pay the price based on the strength or powers of the equivalent canon youkai. Age and Gender You may pick any age. As a human, that will be your physical age. As an immortal, that will be your apparent age – your real age is likely in the order of centuries. You may additionally switch gender to female for free.

Origin

Drop-In – +600/+400/+200/Free: You just arrived in Gensokyo, likely from the Outside World. This option is free to all except Humans, who gain 200 points as they are now an Outsider – no longer protected by the Spellcard rules and treated as food for the local Youkai. If you wish to gain another 200 points which may stack with the +400 from being a human, your arrival has triggered a major incident, akin to the arrival of Sumireko.

Local – Free: You were born in, created, whatever, Gensokyo is your home. You know the local culture, you know the customs. You have a past here.

Perks

Nonlethal Combat – Free/100: Battles can get intense around here. Fortunately, this perk ensures you’ll only deal permanent damage if you deliberately intend to. Hit them right in the face with a big bomb? They’ll just be covered in soot and a wee bit sore. Pincushion them with a hail of knives? They’ll walk it off. Smack them with a train and cut them in half? They’ll just be taken out of the fight. This is free to all in this gauntlet, and 100 points to retain after.

Sake Tolerance – +100/Free/100/200: It’s no secret people here love to drink. As a special offering, everyone gains a resistance to alcohol only achieved through a lifetime of inebriation for free. However, if this is not enough for you, for 100 points you gain an inherent resistance to alcohol, enough to keep up with a Tengu, drinking even beyond the point a human would succumb to alcohol poisoning. For 200 points, you instead gain the drinking ability of an Oni, able to drink nonstop all day without any apparent illness. Tengu and Oni naturally gain the 100/200 level for free. Alternatively, you may gain 100 points by becoming a complete teetotaller. You likely originated from the Outside World, where passing out drunk was the exception instead of the norm, and so have a lightweight tolerance to sake that shall earn you the mockery of your peers and will nearly guarantee suffering embarrassing drunken moments.

Bullet Hell – 200: You seem to have an unlimited supply of basic bullets. Whether it’s magic balls, ofuda, thrown knives, or actual bullets, if they’re common or easy for you to get, you seem to be able to constantly pull them out of your robes. Where are they coming from? Nobody knows.

Kappa Engineering – ? (Free Kappa): Kappa are famous engineers who can create fantastic works of technology… as long as they don’t get distracted midway. By taking this perk, you have access to the same natural aptitude for engineering, as well as their ability to design any piece of technology to function underwater. Even if it wouldn’t make sense.

Easy Mode – Free: EASY MODO?! Only kids play in Easy Mode! Ahem. This is the not-a-gauntlet option. By picking this, you gain access to everything normally locked out by a gauntlet. However, expect the locals to somehow pick up that you’re playing on easy mode and viciously mock you for it upon losing a battle. Additionally, if you die, you fail your chain as per a normal jump.

Abilities What would Touhou be without strange powers?

Flight – -100: The most common power, you can fly. You have the speed and basic skill required to enjoy danmaku battles.

Magic – 200 (Free Magician): Magic has six components, the magician’s Ability, the Temperament of the soul, the Substance of the material and tools, the Space where it takes place, the Time it is performed, and the Fortune or luck of the magician. In Gensokyo, magic has a strong scientific feel that is worked through trial, error, and experimentation. A proper mage must gather the tools. Unfortunately, this will likely involve accidentally poisoning yourself with mushrooms, mercury vapours, or arsenic. Still, you have a decent grounding in magic. An extra purchase (no freebies) will allow you to specialise in one area, such as Alice’s dollmaking or Byakuren’s physical enhancement.

Fairy Magic – 100 (Free Fairy): You have a minor control over an element or similar concept, which manifests like Cirno’s ice magic, Sunny Milk’s ability to refract light. It is tied to the natural occurrence of your element, meaning you will be almost powerless without its presence.

Super Speed – ?:

Devil Summoning – ?: You can now summon little mischievous devils like Koakuma. Their usefulness is greatly limited, but they can at least perform basic chores.

Luck Manipulation

Fantasy Nature:

Boundary Manipulation – 1000: No, you don’t get to start out as strong as Yukari. You gotta practice as much as she has to get her mastery over conceptual boundaries, which will be hard since she’s actu-

Custom – (Varies): It seems no two powers here are the same. You may design any custom power you choose, and price it reasonable to the powers listed here.

Items

Frilly Hat – Free: You have a hat. It’s a very stylish hat. It’s probably covered in frills. Whatever it is, it’s very distinctive.

Frilly Clothes – Free: You also have some nice and frilly clothes based on a very stylised traditional Japanese, or possibly Chinese, clothing.

Bunbunmaru News Subscription – ?: You have a regularly-delivered newspaper describing your adventures and what’s going on in the world authored by a certain crow tengu gonzo journalist. It will arrive erratically, with some months having once a day delivery, some months having a weekly journal. It potentially may even smash through any intervening window. It will continue to arrive regularly post-jump.

Tengu Grand Shogi – ?: Tengu Grand Shogi is similar to Dai Shogi, except with a multitude more pieces and extra rules added. As the name suggests, it’s very popular among tengu.
