Publication Information A Letter form the Coronets Wow! Can you believe it is May already. It has been a year since we were told no more activities. Well so be it. That was the past this is the now. Now we are looking forward to events and gatherings again. We still have restrictions but if we wish to gather and see each other those are things we will have to do. Fighter practices are going strong and they are have fun. Everyone is invited to attend as long as house rules are followed. We have kingdom level events on the calendar for this fall starting with A&S then crown. Stayed tuned to kingdom news for where and further information on event activities. With getting restarted we are in need of new officers. No need to be qualified you will be mentored by the outgoing officer. So read up on jobs in the baronial bylaws and see if there is not something you maybe wanting to try. Also just read bylaws it is time to see if we need updating or changes. We will not be doing a polling this year. With everything going on or not going on the crowns have granted a variance to our bylaws. His excellency and I will remain as the groups baron and baroness until next year or as long as the crown allows. We live the dream but are here for the friends. Stay safe and hopefully in the next few months we will gather. Baron Aeduuin Baroness Deborah A Letter From the Seneschal: Unto the Great and Wonderful Barony of Seleone, it is I, your Seneschal-Mistress Taya. I hope all if finding you well and enjoying some of this wonderful sunshine. We finally were able to have our first in person meeting since last year and it was amazing and so fulfilling to my soul to see everyone and to see some wonderful smiles. We were able to talk about having future meetings and discuss possible future events. One of the first things I would like to mention is our Baronial Reporting- I know that we have all been given some grace over the past year- as we should all be given as well as provide to others. With that being said and with the opening of the Baronial Calendar we should make sure that we are all reporting on time. As always- I want to thank all the officers for all their hard work and dedication through this past year and I must say that I am honored to have this wonderful family. Hugs to everyone. Please feel free to contact me at [email protected] should you have any questions. Mistress Taya de Montgomery. Barony of Seleone A Letter from the Chronicler: This year is flying already. I blinked an eye and now it is May. This month's issue is all about puppets and marionets, as well a little history of the theatrical story of Punch and Judy. I do hope that you'll enjoy this issue. I had fun putting the pages together. I am so pleased to hear that we are starting to have fighter practice again. It has been a hard and trying year for all of us and hopefully we will be able to do more things soon as well as being with our loved ones, friends and family. I think we all cn agree that we never want to go through this ordeal again. I am still looking for a deputy to take on the chronicler position. Please contact me if you are interested in tackling this position . Greek, Corinthian Many examples of such small jointed figurines have been found in tombs, sanctuaries, and terracotta factories. Their attire—a cylindrical polos (headdress) and a short tunic and shoes—seems to indicate that they are ritual dancers. Similarly dressed dancers on reliefs of the fifth century B.C. hold castanets, and some of the jointed figurines hold cymbals or castanets. They are too fragile to serve as real dolls and must have been charms hung up to repel evil with their potential noise and movement. https://www.metmuseum.org/ar t/collection/search/248624 Punch and Judy This story is slightly out of period. When people think of marionettes/puppets they think of Punch and Judy. Punch and Judy shows are recorded in the early 1660's. For some reason we think the possible Queen Elizabeth enjoyed a show or two, that is not the case. So, with this said, here are the puppets' storyline. Punch and Judy are a very famous puppet duo from England who have been around for over 350 years. Although Punch and Judy are primarily English, they are thought to have originated in Italy- by Italian puppeteers who created the puppet character Punchinella. The character Punchinella was based on a character from a particular form of Italian Comedy called Commedia Dell'Arte. Punchinella was originally a marionette. When Italian people began fleeing Italy around 1660 because of poor government and war, this character (later called Punch) began popping up in theatres around England. Although Punch was definitely the first character to emerge, he was later followed by his wife, Judy, his 'girlfriend' Pretty Polly, and his dog, Toby. Punch and Judy shows are known for their outrageous humour, that includes lots of violence, tasteless jokes, and lying, stealing and cheating. It can be described as slapstick comedy: •comedy characterized by boisterous action, such as the throwing of pies in actors' faces, mugging, and obvious farcical situations and jokes. • stick or lath used by clowns, for striking other performers, especially a combination of laths that make a loud, clapping noise without hurting the personstruck. •It wasn't until after 1825 that Punch transformed from a marionette, into a hand puppet, sometimes called a glove puppet. In this very traditional style, the puppet's arms and (sometimes) head are controlled by the hand of the puppeteer. •Mr. Punch has a very distinctive outfit: a jester's motley (the fancy word for a jester's jacket. Similar to what a court jester would wear in medieval times), and a hat with a tassel. He carries his distinctive stick, called the 'slapstick' that he uses to beat other characters with. He has a crooked nose, and a hunchback.
