Sort order. It is nice to have a book format, but eventually this becomes outdated. Feb 17, Stuart rated it Advanced Rubber Guard: Jiu-Jitsu for Mixed Martial Arts Competition it. Maybe it's just that this suffers a little in comparison to that, or maybe it's just that the long wait for it has built up expectations, but I wasn't as impressed as I could have been by this. There were good things. We have a fairly solid overview of the rubber guard, the addition of some bits like the double bagger and the prison guard, and some nice quarter guard stuff. Some of the issues that have come up with the rubber guard over the years have been addressed here, so if you go into this book looking for a solid closed guard game, you'll probably be okay. A lot of the crazier introductory stuff is gone too, so you can just jump straight in and get on with it. I do, however, have a few problems with the book that stop it being anything special for me. The first is that I'm not entirely sure what sort of book it wants to be. It's a little chaotically ordered and incomplete to be a comprehensive, step by step introduction to the 10th Planet bottom game, so that I get the feeling you'd Advanced Rubber Guard: Jiu-Jitsu for Mixed Martial Arts Competition a copy of Mastering Rubber Guard as well, rather than instead. Yet in including many of the same bits, it doesn't feel like it's fully a sequel so much as a new, revised edition. Then there are some unfortunate consequences that come from the time it has taken to print. This wants to be a guide to the most up to date, cutting edge moves, yet the delay means that's not the feeling I get. A lot of the 'new' stuff in there has been new for so long that it is quite well known Advanced Rubber Guard: Jiu- Jitsu for Mixed Martial Arts Competition. There is no way that anyone sufficiently interested to buy the book won't know what the double bagger is. Then there's what's missing. Some of it is stuff from the fringes of the system that nevertheless seems interesting enough that it might have been included. Nor is the Reaper series, which is obviously done by a lot of other people and so isn't exclusively 10th Planet, but often starts from the bottom, and so seems sufficiently 'guard-y' that it should have been included. To avoid it after specifically saying in the intro that they'd made an effort to do more with leg locks seems odd. The biggest issue thanks to the delay, however, is that the book doesn't represent what I understand to be the current main path of the 10th Planet bottom game. Advanced Rubber Guard shows Advanced Rubber Guard: Jiu-Jitsu for Mixed Martial Arts Competition as getting to the invisible collar via the double bagger, and from there to omoplatas, the sorcerer, gogoplatas, or whatever. Yet as I understand it, one of the main goals currently is the Muddy Waters position, a kind of corner lock variation that seems to allow safe and easy arm bar attacks. The position has, in my opinion, solved one of the major problems of the rubber guard system, ie that previously you went to a lot of trouble to go through all the steps, only to end up going for a submission that people defend quite well. I've seen people using Aoki's triangled legs variation all over, and just demolishing people with Advanced Rubber Guard: Jiu-Jitsu for Mixed Martial Arts Competition easy, hard to defend Advanced Rubber Guard: Jiu-Jitsu for Mixed Martial Arts Competition lock at the end. But it's not there. It showed up too late to be in the book, making Advanced Rubber Guard in some ways obsolete before it even came out. Yes, there's some good butterfly guard and half guard stuff in there. Yes, there's some corner lock prison guard stuff, and a little bit of X guard, but let's face it, that isn't why you're thinking of buying the book. I'll say again, there's nothing particularly wrong with the book, beyond a sense of running out of room and time that pervades it. It's just that I can't help feeling that, if you want the most up to date, bendy, crazily back to front techniques, this might not be the way to get them.
