Helio took japanese jiu jitsu which used more strength holds and adapted it to his smaller size by using leverage and the gi. Eddie Bravo has taken the Gracie jiu jitsu system and adapted it to mixed martial arts fighting without a gi. When no gi is present you must use other positions and techniques to accomplish similar goals. This book will teach you that system. Beware flexibility is not required to practice some techniques, but most will require a yoga type level of flexibilty. But hey if you wanna throw up crazy arm bars and triangles you must be flexible anyway. The system is great and you are beginning to see it in mma more and more. This is just the next level of jiu jitsu. I am sure more will follow as the sport grows, but for now these are advanced teachings. I want to trow in that my favorite technique is the electric chair. When someone has you in half guard revert to the electric chair and on someone who is not super flexible you will have it won in a suprising way. I recommend this book to anyone who loves the jiu jitsu game or mma. another great Eddie Bravo book In Mastering the Twister: Jiu-Jitsu for Mixed Martial Arts Competition, Bravo uses over 1,200 color photos and descriptive narrative to illustrate snaring an opponent in the infamous Twister from virtually every control position. • From Many Masters to Many Students: Youtube, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and Communities of Practice
JOMEC Journal Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies From Many Masters to Many Students: YouTube, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and communities of practice Dale C. Spencer University of Manitoba Email: [email protected] Keywords YouTube Brazilian Jiu Jitsu communities of practice Abstract Prior to the last two decades, martial arts practice in Western countries was shrouded by secrecy and esoteric philosophies and there was very little transmission of techniques between practitioners outside of individual martial arts clubs. Techniques were passed down from one master to many students. With the increase in popularity of mixed martial arts, there has been a greater exposure to and transmission of martial arts techniques between practitioners across the globe. Now, anyone with access to television or the Internet can watch and analyze martial arts techniques. In relation to one prominent martial art, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, the Internet has come to serve as the means by which practitioners transmit Brazilian Jiu Jitsu techniques, profess the philosophies of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and reflect on the current state of the art. Based on reflections on the last five years of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu practice and analysis of video posts by martial arts practitioners and comments by viewers, this article probes the nexus between ‘offline’ communities of practice and ‘virtual’ communities of practice that are centered on Brazilian Jiu Jitsu technique acquisition. Specifically, focus is on the use of YouTube as a tool for disseminating and learning Brazilian Jiu Jitsu techniques. Drawing from theories of communities of practice and skill acquisition, this article examines how the exhibition of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu techniques on YouTube has become integrated into practice of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu across the globe.

CrossFit Journal Article Reprint. First Published in CrossFit Journal Issue 67 - March 2008 Getting Started in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Becca Borawski a panel of successful jiu-jitsu players to find out their take on how to start, survive, and succeed at Brazilian jiu-jitsu. This first article in the series focuses on how to choose a school and instructor. My panel of experts • Jimmy Tang has been training in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, both with and without the traditional gi, for six and a half years. A frequent tournament competitor, Jimmy earned his brown belt from Jean Jacques Machado in 2006. • Kenny Florian is a mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter, Ultimate Fighter contestant, and top contender in the 155-pound weight division in the UFC. He has been training Brazilian jiu-jitsu for approximately eleven years and earned his black belt, in five and a half years, from Roberta Maia of Gracie Barra. • Valerie Worthington has been training for nine years. She earned her purple belt from Carlson Gracie and Carlson Gracie, Jr. Currently she trains under Johnny Ramirez and John Ouano at New Breed Academy (and she CrossFits at Petranek Fitness/ CrossFit Los Angeles). In 2007 Valerie won the Valerie Worthington (left) at the World Team Trials, July 2007. gold in her weight division at the World Grappling Games in Antalya, Turkey. One of the most frequent topics of conversation I seem • Tait Fletcher trains MMA with Greg Jackson in to engage in with fellow CrossFitters is about getting New Mexico and is a veteran of the Ultimate started in Brazilian jiujitsu.
