Our Spectacular school

Twelve students from Holbrook Public School made their way to Sydney last Wednesday to attend and perform in the 2011 School’s Spectacular. After a few hiccups we all arrived in Sydney in time for some shopping and sightseeing.

Thursday morning, amid the rain, we all arrived at The Sydney Entertainment Centre for a full day of rehearsal. Our students were given the final section of choreography and shown a number of choreography changes. The kids then put their new skills together with 70 other primary school students to run through their item. In a warm-up room jammed with approximately 300 students who made up the entire segment their item unfurled. The group included drama students from Sydney Drama Group, dancers from Newtown High School for Performing Arts and many other NSW high schools and primary schools.

As the group wound themselves through the tunnels to the main arena for rehearsal, there were many new obstacles that made our rehearsal a little bit rusty.

However, after a few tips and a rehearsal outside, we pulled together to perform well at Friday’s full dress rehearsal. The students were expected to be at the Sydney Entertainment Centre from 8.00 a.m. – 11:30 p.m. on Friday and perform their segment and finale 3 times. It was a long day, but one that brought with it great excitement, enthusiasm and triumph!

Our students led the entire primary school section onto the stage and ended up in the top row of stairs in front of the soloists and 80-piece symphony orchestra. The choreographer Terri Green, selected Matilda and Fletcher to exit the arena last, hand in hand and wave to the crowd. They were the youngest performers in our item and did an amazing job to find each other in amongst the 300 other segment dancers.

After Friday night’s show, our students were selected to have their photos taken with signage from the event’s major sponsors. They were then lucky enough to be introduced and had photos with NSW’s governor, Professor Marie Bashir. She had just flown in from spending the day with Princess Mary in Broken Hill. She commented on how amazing the show was and that after seeing shows all over the world, she ranked School Spectacular as one of the best. She told the children they were beautiful, that she loved them and that they must work hard and study hard in their schooling lives. She was a beautiful, elegant lady who captivated the students with her warmth and affection.

The students rubbed shoulders with many famous people including Kayne & Ambo from ABC kids, John Foreman, and our ears are still ringing from the piercing screams of students, as Jack Vidgen performed at each and every show. Mrs Lund was lucky, or brave enough, to hunt Jack down and have a photo taken with her arm around him. Not an easy task, as he was escorted in and out of the centre and chased by 5,000 crazed fans.

Saturday morning we were given the morning off and it was a good opportunity for more shopping, sightseeing and resting. Saturday’s Matinee was even better than Friday’s performances and Saturday night was out of this world. With 3,500 dancers on the Arena floor for the Finale, our students stood out and were seen by all. With lots of downtime between items, our students entertained themselves during the breaks by meeting other kids in the show, signing, playing games, applying makeup, reapplying makeup and looking at themselves in the mirror!! They also managed to convince Mr Weaven and the parent helpers that it would be a good idea to earn some money busking. After what has been described as an unusual approach to busking, and was possibly an illegal stunt, the students raised $7.20, which they generously donated to me!!! (Thanks guys!) I am still convinced that the people were paying them to stop singing, but $7 is $7!!

Issue 38 – Term 4 – Week 8 Monday 28 November 2011

Saturday Night’s Finale was a super event, the energy, excitement and noise generated by 3,500 dancers and 1,400 choir singers was something difficult to explain. The trip to Sydney was one that these students and their families will remember for many many years to come. It is an event that many schools audition for each and every years and one that we would like to become involved in again. It is one of the largest events in the NSW Public Schools calendar and one that is run perfectly. The staff from NSW Primary and Secondary schools across NSW along with Creative Arts Consultants and members of the Arts Unit made it an event that was incredible.

I would like to thank Anna & Michael Coughlan, Sally Bulle & Penny Evans, Marg Killalea, Justine Lund, Anna Allworth, Jacqui Ross and Mr Weaven for looking after the students and navigating them through crowds, tunnels and obstacles without losing a single one!!

Congratulations to Ali Bulle, Sophia Ross, Jemma Lang, Isabelle Coughlan, Sophie Killalea, Harrison Weaven, Claudia Allworth, Sarsha McCallum, Angelena Ross, Emma Coughlan, Matilda Preston and Fletcher Weaven for being amazing individuals and troupe who represented Holbrook Public School valiantly and proudly for every minute of every day during our trip! Thank you to everyone for your kind words, gifts and appreciation – Holbrook Public School is lucky to have you all as part of it!

Looking forward to School’s Spectacular 2012!!!

Year 6 Melbourne Excursion

On Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of Week 6, Year 6 headed off on their annual excursion to Melbourne. Amid much fanfare, we left Holbrook at 7.00 a.m., and the accompanying parents kept demanding coffee stops. So to appease them, we made several. Once in Melbourne, we commenced our very busy schedule:  the Melbourne Zoo  MacDonald’s for dinner  Eureka Skydeck – where the brave ventured out onto the glass deck  the Market Food Court for breakfasts  the Aquarium  the MCG  Captain Cook’s Cottage  Old Melbourne Gaol  the Museum  Lygon Street for dinner  Bowling at the Casino  Retail therapy at the Queen Victoria Markets  the Science Works

The class was absolutely fantastic! Everyone was an excellent ambassador for our school, and they enjoyed and joined in all of the activities with great enthusiasm. I managed, with much pressure from Mrs Coughlan and much amazement from Mr Holmes, to purchase 5 pairs of fabulous, and very fashionable, shoes. Mrs Parker, despite being incapacitated, managed to keep up and Mrs Bender, took at least 1000 photos.

A very special thank you to all the accompanying parents. Your help was very much appreciated. And to Year 6 – well done!

This term we have been studying the picture book ‘The Deep’ by Tim Winton. We have been learning how to read fluently and write like an author. We performed a play based on ‘The Deep’ at last Friday’s Whole School Assembly.
