Report under the Article 17 of the Habitats Directive European Environment Period 2007-2012 Agency European Topic Centre on Biological Diversity Zerynthia polyxena Annex IV Priority No Species group Arthropods Regions Alpine, Black Sea, Continental, Mediterranean, Pannonian, Steppic The caterpillars of the Southern Festoon (Zerynthia polyxena) live on various birthworts, Because their foodplants grow in different habitats and the caterpillars also have different foodplants in different areas, this spring butterfly can be found in quite different habitats. In the western part of its range, it can be seen in open places along rivers with the foodplant Aristolochia rotunda. In the mountains, the butterflies can be seen in dry, sunny, rocky places, where A. pallida and A. pistolochia grow. In the Pannonian region, the species is found on sites with ruderal vegetation, e.g. along the Danube, but also in vineyards on sunny slopes, where A.clematitis grows as a weed. In Greece, the butterfly occurs in damp areas, as well as on dry slopes, according to the species of birthwort used as foodplant. Its range extends from Europe to Southern Urals and Northwest Kazakhstan. Its conservation status is favourable in Alpine, Black Sea (improving from unknown due to Bulgaria - new coutry in bioregion with large and strong population), Continental (improving from unfavourable-bad due to Bulgaria - new coutry in bioregion with large and strong population) and Pannonian (same as previous) bioregions, unfavourable-inadequate in Steppic bioregion (new bioregion due to Romania), unknown in Mediterranean bioregion (same as previous). IUCN Red List Status Europe: Least Concern, EU-27: Least Concern. The species is listed on the Habitats Directive Annex 4. -

As these were more or less just occasional observations we estimate that the Lepidoptera fauna is presented here with more than 1.500 Species. Already this number indicates the importance of Kozjanski Park for the protection of rare and protected species, although their scope is relatively small protected area of 260 km2, but very important and rich on the biodiversity. The area is a kind of refugee for many rare and endangered species of plants and animals. Park is also a part of Unesco Biosphere Areas (Kozjansko and Obsotelje). As many butterflies and moths species are strictly seasonal and prefer only a particular set of habitats, they are good indicators in terms of anthropogenic disturbance and habitat quality. -

From May 19th to June 8th of 2007, the authors undertook lepidopterological research in 29 localities in Romania, several of which are poorly or totally unstudied from a lepidopterological point of view. 105 taxa were identifi ed, out of which seven receive special attention in the text, with comments on their distribution, ecology and conservation status. Polyommatus amandus (Schneider, 1792) (Lycaenidae) is recorded for the fi rst time in Romania after 28 years. We provide the fi rst record from Muntenia for Cupido (Everes) decolorata (Staudinger, 1886) (Lycaenidae), and the third known Romanian location for Pseudophilotes bavius egea (Herrich-Schäffer, 1852) (Lycaenidae). Lepidoptera DNA-based identifi cation was used for species identifi cation based on larval stages. This technique confi rmed the discovery of Zerynthia polyxena ([Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775) (Papilionidae) in south- ern Dobrogea and its rediscovery in the entire province after 80 years. Introduction Although the Romanian butterfl y fauna has been studied for more than 150 years (e.g. Fuss 1850; Franzenau 1852, 1856, 1859; Mann 1866), there are still large gaps regard- ing the distribution and conservation status of many of the species known to occur within the country’s territory. -

Several varieties have been described in the past, but they are no longer recognized in most taxonomic manuals. Aristolochia serpentaria occurs in 26 eastern states and is common in the southern and central part of its range, while becoming rare along its northern periphery. It is listed as a Division 2 species in Flora Conservanda (Brumback and Mehrhoff et al. 1996). Connecticut is the only New England state in which it is found, where it occurs at 12 known sites in ten towns. It grows in a variety of upland forest communities, but is more likely to be found in dry, somewhat rich, rocky, deciduous or mixed deciduous-coniferous woods in Connecticut. Farther south, it also has broad environmental requirements, occupying many upland soil and forest types. Population trends for the species in Connecticut are unclear. One new population was discovered in 2001. Monitoring in 2001 of eight extant sites found that two populations had decreased, three had increased, and one had stayed the same. Several known populations are threatened by habitat modification, invasive species, or site fragility. Two extant populations have not been surveyed for several years. -

THIELE 1 Veilchenweg 8, D-76706 Dettenheim, Gennany The southwestern Palearctic parnassiine subgenus Zerynthia includes two species. The group is distributed mainly in the Mediterranean region, extending somewhat to bordering regions of the West Palearctic. Larvae feed only on Aristolochiaceae species. Both of the Zerynthia species are protected. Locally in the surround ings of their hostplants, the species are not rare. The illustrations show the subspecies found in southern France, the Southern Festoon, Zerynthia (Zerynthia) polyxena cassandra (Geyer), which ranges westerly as far as southern France ("Ie Midi"). The other species, the Spanish Festoon, Zerynthia rumina (Linnaeus), ranges from southern France, Portugal and Spain, to northwest Africa. Only in southern France can one find both species of Zerynthia, both being acti ve during spring. Die Untergattung Zerynthia (Osterluzeifalter) ist mit 2 Arten ilberwiegend in den mediterranen und teilweise angrenzenden Regionen der Westpalaeartik verbreitet. Die Larven ernahren sich ausschliesslich von Aristolochiaceen (Osterluzei-Arten). Obwohl sie lokal in der Nahe der Futterpflanzen gelegentlich nicht selten vorkommen, stehen beide Arten in Europa unter Naturschutz. Der abgebildete Falter, Zerynthia polyxena cassandra (Geyer), ist die am weitesten westlich verbreitete Unterart in Siidfrankreich ("Ie Midi"). Die andere Art, Zerynthia rumina (Linnaeus), fliegt etwas spater im Frilhjahr von Portugal, Spanien und Nordwest-Afrika bis zur ostlichen Verbreitungsgrenze in Siidfrankreich.
