Halfling All Halflings Are Protected by the Spirits of Their Ancestors Halfling All halflings are protected by the spirits of their ancestors. To other races, they look like they have ridiculous luck, but to them it's the first halfings Lord Luck and Lady Chance watching over them. Brother Body, Sister Soul, and Mother Mind speak of the values of the three A halfling who is physically fit is called a Brother, a smart halfing a Mother, and an imaginative one a Sister, regardless of gender. A dead halfling is called a Father. A halfling who dies taking a great risk is granted great power in the afterlife while a halfling who dies a boring death is granted little power. The halfling saying "Better a Father early than a Father late" is the equivalent of "Who wants to live forever?" Lady Luck and Lord Chance look favorably upon the bold, both granting them better boons in life and greater powers in death Spoiler alert: halfling are creatures of the depths, hence their confusing mythology, powers and stuff. They salt their meat Halflings are strong in Water and Pulse. All the halfelves, halforcs, halfogres and half-anything aren't mixes with humans, they're mixed with halflings. The common name for that race comes from all the halfbreeds it can spawn. Halfbreeds cannot intermix with their own non-halfling race, but they can breed true with other races. Oh yeah they are born of the Deep, created to infiltrate the races of Solod, but Lady Chance and Lord Luck found the races of Solod to be better than the creations of the Deep Lords. To this days halfings are seen as traitors by the Deep races, while the races of Solod see them as odd little buggers who salt their food. Halflings have little use for storing memories, if they are successful at their gambits, their story will be told regardless. So far Halfling names are named after characteristics in English, Lord Luck, Lady Chance, Brother Body, Sister Soul, Mother Mind, and Wits. Halflings Like – Everyone Despite living on Solod, Halflings were originally Deep Dwellers, with Water and Pulse still within their veins. Halflings are a communal people, living in close-knit communities and putting family above all. Such is their devotion that their religion is centered around the concept of family. Halflings believe that they are protected by the spirits of their ancestors, all the way back the the first Halflings. The two original halflings were Lord Luck and Lady Chance, who watch over all halflings and bring them extraordinary luck, favoring the bold. Such is their influence that many a drunken halfling boasts about surviving an avalanche or falling into a volcano or two. The three values they hold dearest after family are Body, Soul and Mind, embodied by the legendary figures of Brother Body, Sister Soul and Mother Mind. A fit halfing is called a Brother; a smart one, a Mother; and an imaginative one, a Sister, regardless of gender. A dead one is called a Father. A halfling who dies while taking a great risk is granted great power in the afterlife, whereas halfing who die boring deaths are granted little power. Unlike the Children of Death, Halflings openly salt their meat, peddling their preserved goods out in the open. This has earned them no small ire from the humans. Still, their silver tongues and social perceptiveness served to retain the good graces of the other races, sometimes enough to bed them. Whether orc, giant, dwarf, or any other race, halflings are compatible with them all, and those who bear the prefix of half- live life with just a little bit of extra luck. Description physique Being creatures of the Deep, halflings have a smooth, featureless, grey skin, ideal for low-friction swimming. In addition, when it doesn't see the sun for too long, their skin tend to become somewhat translucid and veiny in places. They may exhibit black or white stripes on their arms, legs and neck; their hands and feet features light vestigial webbing as well. They're also rather small, with an adult size ranging from 90 to 120 centimeters. Beside those peculiarities, they're surprisingly similar to humans – complete with blonde, brune or ginger facial hair and the standard human spectrum of eye colors. Holding family above all, they also bear facepaint representing their family sigil. Since their culture centers so much around bringing glory to oneself and their family, their bodies often bear obvious signs hinting at their profession: warriors tend to have showy scars, thinkers have rather obvious wrinkles and painters consider their own body a canvas. Thanks to that – and their natural affinity with cold –, halfling fashion revolves around short, patchwork-like clothes which allows them to display the parts of their body that displays their life history. It's notable that, while all halflings have different "marks" earned through their daily life, they almost all bear scars of some kind thanks to their adventurous mindset. • |Warhammer Fantasy: Empire of Man| |The Halflings of the Moot|
    |Warhammer Fantasy: Empire of Man| |The Halflings of The Moot| Straddling the River Aver between the borders of Averland and Stirland, there exists a stretch of rolling hills and near-endless fields of green grass and farmland. Mootland, or otherwise called ‘The Moot,’ is the home of the Halflings: Short, pot-bellied, chubby-faced humanoids that almost resemble the children of Man, and indeed seem to have existed alongside Mankind since the tribes first crossed the World’s Edge Mountains. None know where the Halflings originated from, and indeed even the Halflings themselves don’t seem to care one wit for their past. Likely, Ranald created them as some bizarre joke. But that’s neither here nor there. For all that the halflings appreciate the comforts of home - chief among them being food, alcohol, pipeweed, and the chance to skip out on a hard day’s work - life isn’t always so easy for the little folk. The Moot sits in an admittedly precarious position, for its easterly border is along the edge of Sylvania. That cursed land, ruled by the walking dead and the ever-duplicitous Mannfred von Carstein, is enough to make even a jolly old halfling grow serious and attentive. To Mootland’s south runs a spur of the World’s Edge Mountains, with its myriad tunnels and caverns hosting terrible beasties and monsters: Night goblin warbands, orc tribes, skaven scouting parties, and even trolls wishing to fill their bellies. And unfortunately, even amongst the states of the Empire, halflings experience their own share of prejudice and hatred from the Tall Folk.

  • Embracing the Took : Kinship Between Middle Earth and Sixties Youth
WATKINS, SHANA, M.A. Embracing the Took: Kinship Between Middle Earth and Sixties Youth. (2007) Directed by Dr. Hephzibah Roskelly. 75 pp. The purpose of this thesis is to quash the reading of J.R.R. Tolkien’s works as allegory, especially as allegory for the events of the turbulent 1960s, i.e. the Vietnam War, 1967’s Summer of Love, the women’s liberation movement, etc. By addressing each of the Sixties’ infamous political and social movements, tragedies, victories, and controversies, this paper proves that the members of the Baby Boomer generation were inspired by the events described in Tolkien’s primary works, The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Middle Earth’s events in the novels resounded throughout the Sixties, but were not actually about the Sixties, nor were they allegories of any previous decade, as some critics claim. Being a time of social unrest and demand for government and social revamping, the Sixties provided a particularly enthralled audience for the fantasy genre because it provided an alternative to mainstream literature. Sixties youth – part of which came to be known as the counterculture – demanded alternatives in nearly every facet of the American lifestyle, from the young rock-and-roll music genre to rebellious young celebrity idols like James Dean who contrasted Sixties parents’ idea of glamorous and wholesome movie stars whose film and television characters strove to acquire the materialistic American dream. This thesis discusses themes that Tolkien’s works and the Sixties had in common: namely, generational inheritance and rebellion; authority and isolation; social awakening; distrust and cynicism; reluctant and unlikely heroes; gender issues; activism; and hippie- ism.
