livestock breeding LIVESTOCK BREEDING The achieved genetic gain is determined by two factors – the genetic potential of animals and environmental conditions in which this potential may be realised. To obtain high productivity levels while ensuring good animal fertility and health, both of these factors have to be refined simultaneously. Genetic improvement is a long-term and costly process that requires a consistent approach to selection and matching. The nucleus herds supervised by the National Support Centre for Agriculture (Krajowy Ośrodek Wsparcia Rolnictwa – KOWR) represent a high genetic level, which, in order to be maintained, necessitates drawing on global genetic resources, including the use of Polish- and foreign-bred bulls for breeding. Apart from using the semen of prominent bulls, embryo transfer constitutes one of the most effective and relatively quick methods enabling genetic gain. The primary objective of embryo transfer is to produce bulls for insemination and heifers bred for improving their own herds. In 2017, a total of 1,272 embryos were obtained and 984 embryos were transferred. Transfer efficacy was 57%. A high animal genetic potential is displayed only in good environmental conditions, when a proper nutrition programme based on balanced feed intake is ensured. Our companies have built new livestock buildings or modernised the existing ones, using innovative and functional technical solutions applied in the global livestock building industry. In barns, cows can move around freely, enjoy easy access to feed and have uninterrupted air circulation. With a loose-housing system, it was possible to identify technological and feeding groups, depending on the milk yield and physiological status of cows, as well as to apply precise feed rations under the TMR feeding system. Also, state-of-the-art technologies for preparing and preservation of coarse fodder have been implemented. 38 companies supervised by the National Support Centre for Agriculture conduct programmes aiming at genetic improvement of livestock animals: dairy and meat cattle, pigs, horses and sheep. The companies breed dairy cattle of the following breeds: Polish Holstein-Friesian, Jersey and Simmental as well as domestic conserved breeds: Polish Red and Polish Red-White. In 2017, the average milk yield per cow was 10,491 kg, while in some companies it exceeded 12,500 kg. The cattle bred by the KOWR companies only account for 3.4% of cows covered by performance testing in the country. However, this relatively small population is the source of nearly half of Poland’s dairy cattle genetic gain. The cattle bred by the KOWR’s companies exhibit a steady growth in milk yields and also win top titles (super-champion and champion) at national and regional livestock shows. The companies supervised by the National Support Centre for Agriculture produce high-quality breeding material for private pig breeding farms. KOWR-managed herds include the following pig breeds: Polish Large White, Polish Landrace, Duroc and Pietrain. They produce purebred and crossbred breeding material in different genotype mixes. Horses of the following nine breeds are bred in studs and stallion depots supervised by the National Support Centre for Agriculture: English thoroughbred, purebred Arabian, Malopolska Horse (combining Arabian and thoroughbred), Polish Halfbred Horse, Polish Coldblood Horse, Silesian Horse, Wielkopolska Horse, Hucul Horse and Polish Konik. Our horse studs boast world-famous beautiful and fearless purebred Arabian horses. The beauty of Arabian horses bred in Poland is well recognised and valued by breeders all around the world. It is hardly possible to find a championship held anywhere in the world where Polish Arabians or at least Arabians with Polish pedigrees would not have triumphed. The details on how to contact our companies regarding advisory and marketing assistance can be found further in this information guide. You can also find there the specification of species and breeds offered by individual companies.
