Wellington Wanderers Cricket Club Inc. Autumn Newsletter 2019 As autumn heads slowly towards winter we reflect on the recently completed season. The 2018-19 season was certainly one of the busiest in recent years with twenty eight days committed to cricket. The weather and last minute school commitments meant some matches were not able to be played or rescheduled. The season started with the AGM in late September with the AGM and dinner where we celebrated Matthew Roche being made a life member and current Wanderer and recently retired Wellington Firebird Luke Woodcock being guest speaker. This was followed by the hugely successful golf day at Shandon where members and guests attempted to win a new Mercedes on the 18th hole. Thanks to Gazley’s for making this a golf day with a difference. Two breakfasts were held this year to celebrate the visits of Sri Lanka Ewen Chatfield Tribute breakfast with and Bangladesh. The breakfasts were quite different with Russel MC Bryan Waddle Arnold and Grant Elliott entertaining us at the Sri Lankan breakfast and in a break with tradition the Bangladesh breakfast was a celebration of Ewen Chatfield’s remarkable cricket career. Highlights on the playing field were another successful trip south to The Willows, the Governor General’s Secondary Schools Boys and Girls XI matches on the Basin, the Kindred Cricket Clubs tournament at Karori Park, the match against the NZ Maori Secondary Schools XI and the ten colleges who entered the Hunt Cup Caleb Montegue scoring 100 v Onslow T20 tournament at the Petone Rec. Wanderers worked in conjunction with College Sport and Cricket wellington to put on this event. Thanks to Matt Wills from CW and Tracey Deveraux from College Sport for their assistance in making a success of this new initiative. Wellington College and St Pats Silverstream won their pools and will play in the final which will take place at the beginning of the next season. Play on the last day was rained out preventing the last pool games and the final taking place. Sri Lankan Breakfast: This was held at the Basin on December 15th. Ninety members and guests turned up to hear former Sri Lankan batsman Russel Arnold and current Wanderers Grant Elliott swap tales of their times meeting on and off the field. Given that we were right in the middle of Christmas preparations the club was very happy with the turn out. Bangladesh Breakfast: In a departure from the norm the club decided to run the Russel Arnold, Grant Elliot and Bryan Waddle Sri Lankan Breakfast breakfast as a tribute to retiring Wellington and New Zealand legend Ewen Chatfield. After a career spanning well over 50 years Chats has decided to finally hang up his boots. We could not have fitted another person into the Norwood Room as Wanderers members and guests turned up to pay tribute to Wellington’s favourite cricketing son. That so many of Chat’s former team mates rose to speak in his honour was a testament to what this man meant to so many over a lifetime of cricket. Martin Snedden, Jeremy Coney, Ian Smith, Bryan Waddle, John Greenwood, Grant Cederwall, Ken Rutherford, Wally Lees all spoke of their memories of years playing in teams with Chats. In a moving couple of minutes Peter Lever spoke to Chats from the South Coast of England. Sir John Anderson KBE: Sir John passed away in Wellington on the 13th of November. He was a current Wanderer and a life Member of Karori CC, Wellington Cricket and New Zealand Cricket. Sir John had a stellar career in business culminating in being CEO of NBNZ Ltd and latterly ANZ National Bank Ltd. His directorships in business were too numerous to mention here. Sir John was also an extremely talented sportsman playing both senior rugby and cricket, was Chairman of NZ Cricket and of the ICC. Sir John was instrumental in setting up the NZ Cricket Foundation and was secretary from 1972 until his death in 2018. He played many matches for the Wanderers in the late 1960’s and through the 70’s and his power hitting was legendary. Long after he finished playing for Wanderers he continued to contribute to the club in a material way. He will be remembered by us with much fondness. Rev J. Fraser Patterson: Fraser passed away on the Kapiti Coast on 28th March 2019. Fraser was an active member of Wanderers during his time in Wellington never missing an opportunity to turn out for the club against the College 1st XI’s. He was also a cricketing Rotarian playing many matches both here and overseas with the Rotarians. He will be fondly remembered for his contributions to our test match breakfasts where he would take the opportunity to say Grace as we commenced the breakfast. In a delightful turn Fraser’s “Grace” would take the form of a poem and would be based around the touring side. He will be remembered for his enthusiasm and kindness towards those club members he came into contact with. He enjoyed getting out on the field and bowling his brisk medium pacers often troubling much younger college players. At the crease he never shirked a challenge and in the days where everyone wears a helmet he never did. One can only assume he had divine help against the schoolboy bouncers. He has left big shoes to fill. A more comprehensive obituary on both Fraser and Sir John will be included in the Annual Report. Blazers and Ties: Scott McHardy and Matthew Roche have had dialogue with Club Colours in the UK. They are able to do made to measure blazers for club members. We are still working though the costings of those.
