    MOLECULAR AND BIOLOGIC CHARACTERIZATION OF TRYPANOSOMA CRUZI FROM THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA by DAWN MARIE ROELLIG (Under the Direction of Michael J. Yabsley) ABSTRACT Trypanosoma cruzi, the causative agent of Chagas disease, is a flagellated protozoan parasite endemic to the Americas. There are an estimated 7.6 million people infected within Latin America, with 200,000 new cases occurring annually. In the United States, only six autochthonous human cases have been reported, but screening of US blood donors since January 2007 by the Chagas’ Disease Biovigilance Network has confirmed over 1,000 seropositive donations, some of which are believed to be autochthonously acquired infections. In addition to autochthonous human cases, naturally acquired infections have been reported in domestic dogs, captive exotic animals, and a wide range of wildlife species. Although T. cruzi is common in the sylvatic cycle (transmission between wildlife and vectors) and the peridomestic cycle (between animals that move between the wild and around homes), circulation within the domestic cycle (between hosts within or around homes) is less often documented in the US. In the sylvatic cycle, a number of wild mammals have been identified as reservoirs and the prevalence of T. cruzi in US wildlife based on serology, culture isolation, and/or PCR can be equally as high as in South America. Considerable work on T. cruzi has been conducted in Central and South America, but due to limited numbers of human cases in the US, little work has been conducted to characterize US isolates. Previous studies have determined prevalence in some host species through the use of serology, hemoculture, and/or PCR, identified transmission routes for a few reservoirs using non-native isolates, and molecularly characterized a limited number of isolates.

    TAINTED LANDS CORRUPTION IN LARGE-SCALE LAND DEALS Professor Olivier De Schut er ABOUT THIS REPORT This report details the findings of the Tainted Lands project, which was jointly launched in 2015 by the International Corporate Accountability Roundtable (ICAR) and Global Witness. At the outset of the project, ICAR and Global Witness commissioned Professor Olivier De Schutter to author this report, which is the result of a series of stakeholder consultations and extensive desk-based research. The intention of this report is twofold. First, the report aims to raise awareness of large-scale land deals, corruption, and the combined efects of these two issue areas on human rights around the world. Second, the report intends to provide practical steps that investors, financial institutions, and governments must take to prevent human rights harms from occurring in the context of corruption and land. ABOUT THE AUTHORS Olivier De Schutter (LL.M., Harvard University; Ph.D., University of Louvain) Professor Olivier De Schutter is the former UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food. He is also a Member of the Global Law School Faculty at New York University and is Visiting Professor at Columbia University. His publications are in the area of international human rights and fundamental rights in the EU, with a particular emphasis on economic and social rights and on the relationship between human rights and governance. His most recent book is International Human Rights Law (Cambridge Univ. Press, 2010). No quotation from the thesis and no information derived from it may be published without proper acknowledgement. i Abstract This thesis argues that caffeine use offered a survival advantage to our ancestors and that moderate use continues to offer modern humans benefits. Caffeine ingestion, through the blocking of adenosine receptors, elicits broad elements of the mammalian threat response, specifically from the ‘flight or fight’ and ‘tend and befriend’ repertoires of behaviour: in effect, caffeine hijacks elements of the stress response. If the effects of caffeine had been discovered recently, rather than being available to Homo sapiens since Neolithic hunter gatherer times, it is likely that caffeine would be considered a ‘smart’ drug. More caffeine is being ingested today than ever previously recorded. Caffeine use is found across all age groups, all socio-economic strata, most ethnic groups, and is being used increasingly by the medical and pharmaceutical industries and by the armed forces. Yet despite this wide usage and a substantial body of research literature, there is at present no clear pattern or plausible model for the way caffeine achieves its effects. There is much contradiction in the literature and ambiguity as to why caffeine use should improve performance on some tasks, impair it on others and have no effect on other tasks, for some but not all of the time.
