Term 1 Week 11 2019.Pdf 06 3880130 26 Huia Street Taihape, 4720 www.tas.school.nz TAS Radio - 88.1FM [email protected] Principal: Richard McMillan Lead Me to Lead My Learning Taihape Area School Monday 8th April, 2019 Term 1 – Number 11 Important Dates This Week Holidays Sun 7th-Wed 10th Central North Island Coaching Clinic (Te Awamutu) Tuesday 9th Information Evening for Thursday 25th ANZAC Day Potential School Trustees Friday 12th End of Term Monday 29th Start of Term 2 Tena koutou katoa Welcome to another busy week the final week of an excellent term. After the busy term, the holidays come as a welcome respite, and an opportunity to rest and recuperate before another busy time in Term 2. We have a hectic week ahead, and already a group of students are in Te Awamutu participating in the Central North Island Coaching Clinics to select Teams for the New Zealand Area Schools Tournament, which this year is in Rotorua. As a staff we have been delighted with the majority of our students this term – they have worked extremely hard, are progressing well, and have made our School a great place to be. There is a very positive tone around the School, with increasingly positive levels of interaction between students of all ages. It is very heartening when visitors comment on the friendly and very welcoming atmosphere they discover here. The presence of pupils of such a range of ages has many positive benefits – older students tend to moderate their behaviour around the younger children, while the older students can be fantastic role models, and mentors, for our younger pupils. This is demonstrated at School Events, such as the Swimming and Athletics Sports, when the Primary Children are in awe of the performances of the Senior Athletes 1 There have been many highlights, inside the classroom and out, some of which are listed below: - Athletics and Swimming Sports (School and Interschool); Outdoor Education Camps and Activities, including Rafting; The PTP (Primary Technology Programme); Mufti-Days to support the NZ Heart Foundation, St John’s, and our local Muslim Community; The Rangatahi and Tamariki Mentoring Programmes; The Trillian TREK; The World Gumboot Throwing Championships. We celebrate the success of our pupils in many ways – Assemblies, Newsletters, Reward Cards, a word of praise/encouragement etc. Now it’s your turn – please talk to your child/children about their work, their term, and about School generally. Ask them about the things that have gone well, and congratulate them on their successes. Also take the opportunity to set some goals for term two, and identify one or two areas to try and improve. Term Two will be here before we know it, and will no doubt be another busy time with a range of activities scheduled including the Junior Young Leaders Day, Senior (Year 9-13) Cross Country, Rippa Rugby, 7’s Rugby, the School Ball, and the New Zealand Area Schools Winter Tournament (Rotorua). Next term will also be huge for the various Winter Sports. Have a great week, and a wonderful holiday. Regards Richard McMillan Principal The TAS School Wide Behaviour Expectations are: - 2 Rangatiratanga: Wairuatanga: We are Learners We are Reflective We show Rangatiratanga We show Wairuatanga Whanaungatanga: Manaakitanga: We are Caring We are Respectful We show Whanaungatanga We show Manaakitanga Tall Poppies The following Taihape Area School students rose above the crowd last week as outstanding achievers, and members of our Learning Community: Ajahni Gilbert (Room1) - for an outstanding display of our TAS Values at Celebration Assembly! Working Bee A very productive day at the Old College, on Saturday, with a number of tasks completed. Thank you to those people who assisted. There will be another Working Bee early Term2. Skiing A large number of Students have indicated they will be going skiing in Term 3. We are delighted with this, but please note that the cost is approx. $400, and this must be paid up-front. While $400 is a great deal of money, this is the cheapest deal available by far – as well as access to the mountain, it covers travel, lessons, and ski hire for the whole term. Over the past 2 years the Board is taking a more proactive stance against families who have poor credit records. Families owing money must make arrangements to cover any existing outstanding fees, as well as paying up front, before their child/ren will be able to participate in activities with extra costs attached. One option to ensure skiing is viable could be to open a Trust Account and begin making regular payments between now and the start of Term 3. School Grounds We love seeing the School grounds and facilities used during the weekends and holidays. However please remember to leave things tidy, and respect School Property. The School belongs to us all – please value that fact!! 5 Holiday Reading The holiday break is a long time away from books, and essential reading practice, for many children, in particular Primary aged students. It would be wonderful if all children could spend some time each day during the holidays reading, or being read to. The benefits will be long term. Taihape Library is also well worth a visit. Speed Past School We have had a number of scares recently, with driver driving too quickly, or inattentively, outside TAS. Although we do not have Official School Zone status (which would reduce the allowable speed past the School to 40km) we implore all drivers to recognise the potential dangers that do exist outside (all) Schools, and drive accordingly. Children are unpredictable, and can act impulsively at times, putting themselves at risk. As adults we are aware of this however, and must drive accordingly and defensively, at all times. Rugby The Rugby Season kicked off last Wednesday, in Wanganui, with a 10aside round robin version of the game of 3 halves. Games were 10aside, 10 minutes, but played on a full field and therefore proved a real test of fitness, concentration, and TEAM work. TAS played 3 games in a row, and by the 3rd against Cullinane, their lungs were bursting. This year TAS rugby is in rebuilding mode, but with a number of very promising boys in the Junior ranks, the future looks encouraging, particularly after their efforts in this tournament (3 wins out of 4), and some outstanding rugby on display. The boys played aggressively, but fairly, and displayed a huge range of skills, including the ability to pass accurately, placing players into gaps. It was very impressive. A huge thanks to coach Joe Coogan. 6 Results: Wins over Wanganui High School, Wanganui Collegiate School, and Rangitikei College, and a narrow loss to Cullinane College. Touch A challenging and somewhat frustrating last game, but also exciting in that we know what we want to want to work for towards the future. I am very proud of all the efforts of the team and the huge progress they have made. LAC were much bigger physically and very fast. In saying that we put some great plays together. and Hoani and Amo scored tries, while Tawera got two. The final score was 4- 10. We have thank all the supporters who have come to see us throughout the module. It was good to see Shari and Mark there last night, as Shari attended our first game and could see the immense development of skills, and plays. Also thanks to Jude who works tirelessly behind the scenes for TAS Sport, and to Sha Bannister at QEC, who organises our competition.

Ultimately the strategy aims to address erosion hot spots that affect downstream water quality. 1.1 Outputs (What we achieved) REPORTING PERIOD YTD MEASURE TARGET % 1st 2nd 3rd 4th ACTUAL WCS farm plans completed / delivered 0 0 5 0 Grant projects agreed 41 41 25 164 Complete Annual Report to WRET - - 1 - Land improvement (hectares protected) 14 14 250 6 1.1 Outputs Activity Summary Implementation: 1.1.1 Two WCS plans from 2012-13 (carried forward) were delivered to landowners in July and August respectively. No work plans had been discussed as at the time there were no grant funds available with all funds being fully allocated. The Whanganui River Enhancement Trusts (WRET) have since confirmed funding will mean these properties will be re assessed and can proceed. 1.1.2 In relation to the new financial year, to date we have received and approved 41 environmental grant applications totalling $101,737 of grant funding (NB: the overall project costs are greater than this amount). As the year progresses projects are managed within the grant budget of $103,000 ($50.000 HRC and $53,000 WRET). Despite exceeding the targeted number of grants (41 cf. 25) the 41 grants that were approved were within the total funding budget of $103,000.
