Outgoing Manawatu District Council chief executive Lorraine Vincent has been coming to terms with not having to be on-call 24/7, 365 days of the year, and she has rather warmed to the idea. ‘‘There’s going to be a little bit of me-time . . . I really just want a rest.’’ A well deserved rest, to say the least. Vincent has been serving the community through the council for two decades, the last seven years as its chief executive officer. Initially, she held the com- munity services manager role before moving on to be the com- munity and environment group manager. The sounds of ukuleles will soon be heard from (TAS) after its acquisition of ten of the instruments through a Rotary Club initiative. Head of performing arts Timoti Pekamu said the ukuleles were not exclusively for TAS students and any school-aged children in the community were welcome to take part. ‘‘It’s another door that’s going to open for our kids creativity as well as their confidence’’, he said. ‘‘Music is always a great confi- dence booster.’’ A variety of businesses supported the venture by buying one of the ukuleles. ‘‘It’s a little easier on the ear than the recorder,’’ said Rotary member and instigator of the initiative Michael Andrews. ‘‘It’s easy to play and basically it’s going to allow all the kids who have never had any access to a musical instrument something they can quickly learn to play.
